On your website there is a table of foods and whether they are optimal or not. I was wondering, where do carrots fit in please? And bananas? Bananas have lots of starch in right?

So I guess Im asking, are bananas and carrots optimal foods?

Oh and also what about dried fruit?

TIA!

Edit: Ive also been reading your article on emotional eating. I would love to fast during my holidays coming up but last time I tried to fast I was hungry during the whole three days I stayed at it!

Im thinking, was it because I ate late in the night before I started my fast, and the food wasn't very healthy?
Or was it because I felt like I should be eating, and so a form of emotional needs rather than physical, and what was actually happening was my body was cleansing?

And one last thing, I read a book on fasting and it says only adults should fast, as you shouldn't fast if you are still developing unless you are severly overweight. I am not even overweight, and I am 16. Does that mean I shouldn't fast yet, or is that not the truth?

Again, TIA! So sorry I keep sending you long posts!!

I am not rawnora, but perhaps you will be interested in my thoughts about fasting. I have been on many water fasts - one was 30 days!

I would recommend that unless you have a medical condition that you feel would be helped by fasting, that you not do so - at least not a water fast. I would say that as long as you are growing (until 21 or so), you might be better off concentrating on getting the best nutrients into your body and avoiding as many harmful substances as possible. The body will cleanse itself if you do this.

Perhaps you were hungry all the time on your other fast, because your body is still growing and wanted you to supply it with building materials?!?!

Hope this helps

Bananas yes. Carrots no. Bananas are starchy when they are unripe but the ripening process converts their starch to sugar. They are as perfect a human food as you can find, although personally I don't eat them often. I think I just overdid it in my previous cooked life because bananas were one of the few fruits I ate almost everyday. Carrots have some sugar but also a lot of starch. We're better off getting our sugar from foods that don't present so much difficulty. We just don't have the ability to break down much starch.

Dried foods are good for transitional purposes. They are hard for the body to break down, therefore they suspend the cleansing process or at least slow it down to a manageable level. They are not optimal foods and when your body is ready for you to give them up, you will get clear signals (if you're paying attention!).

I'm no fasting practitioner but I've heard TC Fry talk many times about fasting young people, and Herbert Shelton even recommends fasting children who are symptomatic. I'm sure you could find some reliable guidelines if you read Herbert Shelton's "Fasting Can Save Your Life" or his book about hygienic rearing of children which is available on line at www.soilandhealth.org. I'd be interested to find out which fasting book you're referring to. There are many fasting books written by people who don't have a complete understanding of fasting, as Herbert Shelton or even TC Fry did.

The symptoms you experienced while fasting are physical, and they normally go away after a couple days, but not always. The last time I fasted (18 months ago), I also felt pretty weak and "hungry" for 3 days. I'm sure there are many factors responsible for why some people feel these symptoms more than others; it is theorized that those who have the most cleansing to do feel them more. This seems to ring true because I fasted for 7 days once when I was 19 and my hunger went away completely on the second day and I was full of energy almost the whole 7 days. Quite a different experience from what I encounter now as I try to fast after 27 more years of abusing my body.

Btw, my coaching rates are quite affordable if you're interested! :)

Warmly,
Nora

alex: Thankyou so much for taking the time to respond. They are good points, I do feel that maybe I shouln't do a full on fast just yet. I think I will just try and only eat when I am truly hungry, a thing i have read about on Rawnora's website.

Rawnora: Thankyou very much for your reply! You are so full of wisdom and knowledge :) And I never knew carrots had starch in them... you learn something new every day

If I get stuck anymore I will consider your coaching! Thankyou again :D

Paul Bragg wrote in his books, that Bragg's kids are fasting once a week(water fast) from the age five. And their dogs too. Their children never had any childhood ilnesses, but they did have colds sometimes. Bragg's diet was around 70 percent raw and he drank just distilled water.
