Did any of you find a source for raw olives in Rome? Theres olives everywhere but I have a funny feeling that few of them are raw and unpasteurized--especially given the fact that even the ones out in the open bins in the shops, when you read the labels, have PRESERVATIVES added....ugh.

similarly a problem with olive oil--i can find it that says either cold pressed but its not organic or organic but doesnt say cold pressed. the organic one does say solely by mechanical means but ive only found one that actually says "cold pressed" in italian, and its not organic.... is the "solely by mechanical means" enough to mean unheated or does it actually have to say cold pressed here?

My body is craving fats--olives, avocados, etc, and i dont know where to find raw olives, nor have i found reasonably priced avocados.....

thanks--

Kaybee,
organic olive oil is always cold pressed! The law doesn't allow any other way to obtain oil from oilves, if it is stated that it is organic.
Not so sure about olives though. I have the same problem here, I never know when olives are raw. I buy black organic olives from the health food shop cured in water and salt, those "should" be raw and surely without additives!
Avocadoes here are so expensive, i know :(

Dear Kristen

Believe I mentioned in a past post that my Italian ability is limited [7 words] SO was unsure if the olives purchased at the market on Amadeo were raw ... only know they were in oil with no vinegar.

Seeing as the Italian olive harvest is soon you should be able to find a source (likely closer to Florence). Personally would post something on www.chowhouund.com (so many of these foodies know how to get more "exotic" ingredients). My friends are in Rome for a few days before they move back to Paris. Will send them a friendly reminder email re: helping you find raw with an add on note re- raw olives.

hey--thanks for the info. good to know about the organic label here that everything has to be cold-pressed. that helps. and i guess i will try to seek out some organic olives at a hfs then--

Bridle--sure, if you can get any info from your friends in Rome, thanks
