What's the standard way to make fruit leather? I'm still waiting on a raw book I ordered so I'm kinda waiting it out until it arrives, but I really want to try this. I did attempt to dehydrate some bananas that I blended with almond milk and spread that out really thin but I wasn't sure of the correct time and it came out real crusty. Do most people just mix water with the fruit or what? I'm really new to this. lol. Thanks.

My kids LOVE this one:

1 Pint Strawberries
2 Kiwis
1 Mango

Blend in Vitamix
pour on dehydrator sheets and trays

I'm not sure how long I just put them in overnight and in the morning they're done.

They peel off just like "Fruit Roll Ups"

:) I believe you added too much liquid, next time you try it use less, also you can type into your computer recipes for fruit leather and you can get some super recipe there. No need to waste your ingredients. Also you can go to the search banana up at the of this page and type in fruit leather and get some help there.

You don't need to mix any water with the fruit, bananas will make excellent fruit leather all by themselves, just blend them all up, it's that easy, same with any fruit, you can mix fruits too, make swirls etc.

I will make fruit leather out of almost "anything". If I have smoothie (green or not) left over that no one is going to drink, it goes into the dehydrator and becomes a fruit leather! Made the cranberry sauce in Alissa's book last year, had a bunch left over so it became leather as well.

My kids really loved the cranberry one and they like all that sour stuff anyway so I make sure I make sweet batches of fruit leather and I make sour ones by adding lemon juice to the mixture...tart granny smith apples and lemon juice make nice, sour ones that my kids devour!

This summer, I got a REALLY overripe watermelon that no one wanted to eat. I removed the melon from the rind, seeded it, put into the Vitamix and blended. Then, I strained out the juice with a nut milk (or paint strainer) bag into a large bowl. We drank the juice and I put the pulp back into the Vitamix and blended with 2-3 apples and a little lemon juice (for the kiddies) and made leather out of that. They really liked it!

I don't think I've ever used actual recipes for making leathers...just kinda play around with different stuff.

The "crustiness" of fruit leather can also come from it being in the dehydrator too long or simply by it being spread a little too thinly. Overnight usually suffices depending on how thick or thin it is...if really thin, it shouldn't take too long...if thicker, it may take a little longer to completely dry but still be pliable.

it is quite amazing!!
would never imagined i could use my leftover smoothie!!
thanks so much for that suggestion!!
i always am on a race for time, to finish my extra smoothie -- ha ha
it is so filling, and i always have way too much extra

made it.........
and you are right,....... bc i didn't realize the density
you can NOT spread it TOO thin..........
which i would have thought was necessary

but 2 out of the 3 came out -- and yummmmmmmm
what a wonderful idea!!

mine was a combo, of parsley, papaya, banana and cactus juice............
it was very tasty

can't wait to experiment with others!~~ thanks again

My kids won't touch my Green smoothie of Kale, Banana, strawberries and Blueberries.....but, they will devour a whole tray of the green fruit roll up- :p

Good Luck- and have FUN!

I have not had much luck dehydrating pineapple mixtures though???????

I also make fruit leather out of my leftover smoothies but usually just blend fruit (combinations or just one type like banana which is my favorite) and not add water and just spread out for about 10 to 12 hours at 105 degrees. It is soooo good!

Hey, this thread made me think- how yummy pumpkin leather would be....has anyone tried it? maybe add cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg seasonings....really nice fall treat to carry with you- the cinnamon keeps me warm too :D

may try this soon- but please any advice on making the pumpkin easier to work with? I had to wrestle with the last one and it was pie size!!!!

still have so much of the quarters of the pumpkin left to experiment with!!
will try this and let you know~!

by the way,.......it is hard, but processed either through your juicer or food processor -- DOES THE TRICK!! :)

bit tricky...........
one tray came out...........ok
but the other was difficult to get it to that leather pull stage

hmmm, wonder if might need to mix with other hardy fruits to do it

good though

To revive the thread.

I ordered a dehydrator and I'm anxious about to make some fruitleather or cookies.

Does anyone tried to use the pulp of the juicingprocess to make something out of it? I'm a little concerned about to throw away so much good stuff.

Saludos

Marcel

Vegetable pulp can be used to make savory crackers, pizza crusts, breadsticks (RFFE), etc.

I use my carrot pulp to make homemade carrot cake and also sushi "rice".

I just got "Raw Food For Everyone" and I noticed that Alissa has several fruit leather recipes in it. Can't wait to try them!
