..is it better to eat that local, seasonal and organic vegan (cooked) meal than it would be to eat fruits which have been shipped thousands of miles to my super-picky 'i'm raw so i have to eat all this fruit' self?

this is one of many current "mental" struggles i'm having right now.

i would really appreciate some discourse, to hear what other people think about this.

my health is important, but the health of the planet is also important. if the first law is do no harm, well, i don't see how i can't NOT do harm. the way i've become accustomed to eating is not easy on the earth. :(

I'm not clear on the concept. IF you've got local, seasonal, organic produce why eat it cooked?

And, I'm assuming the trucking part is what you are referring to as far as the "health" of the planet?

For me, my health is most important and it evolves out from there. I'm not helping the earth or anything else if I'm not healthy.

IF there's local, seasonal, organic produce around then there's RAW local, seasonal, organic produce for me to eat.

Wherever you are...there is fresh local produce. Eat that if you are concerned. If you are VERY concerned....you can always grow your own.....or SEEK out local small farmers. They are out there.

This question comes up a lot.

Bottom line is, which one makes you feel tired, sluggish etc?

well, do you just eat nothing but apples and pears for 5 months?

depending on where one lives, the amount of local produce that can be eaten raw varies. or even when eaten raw, there is only so much selection.

i guess i just wonder what the heck people eat all winter -- if i were to exclude bananas, citrus and other tropical fruits/berries and only eat fresh local fruits -- i've got TONS of apples and pears and will eat them to a point and then.. ugh.

you know when your body just doesn't WANT anymore apples? i don't know.

as for local vegetables, certainly there are more, although i've yet to prepare raw squash or other root veg in any way resembling edible
carrots? kale? cabbage? onions? garlic? potatoes? squash? mustard greens?

i just might get rid of a LOT of excess weight eating this way!

on second thought.... hmmm :D could work quite well!

Don't let your health suffer for your compassion. As Rev stated, you need to be healthy in order to be there for everyone/thing else.

Even us mothers need to heed that advise, we are no good to our families if we fall apart just to accommodate them.

well, do you just eat nothing but apples and pears for 5 months?

No, but that wasn't what I got out of your question. I read your question as would one eat raw "shipped" as opposed to cooked local.

depending on where one lives, the amount of local produce that can be eaten raw varies. or even when eaten raw, there is only so much selection.

That's a given. Then, I'd imagine, one would eat what's available in stores.

carrots? kale? cabbage? onions? garlic? potatoes? squash? mustard greens?
Everything but the potatoes and some even eat them.

i just might get rid of a LOT of excess weight eating this way!

Revvell, I can't help thinking that the little sheep has such a sad look on it's face.
Now back to the subject lads and lassies.
Is it better to eat local cooked or distance raw.
My Question is. If you know that your local produce is poisoned or contaminated for some reason would it be better to eat it or eat the long distance stuff. You know the answer.
Cooked is contaminated and poisoned so eat what ever you can get as long as it is raw.

I hear ya, definitely. The "eat locally" movement is really attractive to me.

However, the way I see it, there ARE some legitimate reasons for shipping things long distance across the world, and raw food is one of them. Because without raw food, I cannot maintain my health (I have tried!). I live in the NE, and can't thrive on locally grown food all year long. Even when I was eating "healthy" vegan food, I had health problems that simply wouldn't go away.

I live near a lot of farms, and the growing season stops around Thanksgiving. So it's imported produce from then until the spring. I could live on carrots/apples that are grown in the fall bc they store well, but raw tubers and squashes don't agree with me, so I don't eat them. And all the sprouts in the world wouldn't fill the gap.

So I conserve fuel in other ways: public transport, biking locally, buying locally whenever possible, second-hand stuff instead of new things made across the world, etc.

Until I am able to live a more sustainable lifestyle in general and live in a climate that supports a year-round growing season, this is the best I can do.

I met my neighbours on the street yesterday and commented on the fact that they looked as if they were dressed for a party and they informed me that they were on the way to a gathering of The Slow Food Movement.
They said that it was set up in Italy when a Mc Donnalds was placed at the bottom of The Spanish Steps.
I googled it and here is their website.

for the record, i still don't "get" this whole sheep thing which pops up now and then on threads around the forum -- yall have some insider jokes going on! tis okay. i'm trying not to feel inconsequential with my attempt at getting some alternate ideas. maybe i should've posted as follows? ;)

WHO EATS RAW & LOCAL YEAR ROUND?

and if you do could you please pretty please tell me what this looks like?!

that said, i'm so glad that i've created a place for frolicking in the fields with friends :p

I appreciate this perspective... I too use public transpo or simply walk everywhere and do my best to buy local and reduce cosumption by just purchasing less in general, or 2nd hand too, when I do buy.

I lean to All or Nothing, and need constant reminders to just do the best I can do with what I am/where I am right now :)

Dear Being,
I also live in the NE and there is a lot of politics to the problem of the lack of small local growers. I mean, man, if the trucks ever stop coming to Maine, I will probably have to eat some meat!! I can eat a lot of seaweed but I am spoiled by my society and want variety in my meals. Yes, one can seek out local growers, but for the most part they farm for 3 seasons, and I have made a delicious curried squash soup (raw) and this is what I know... if I go off of raw I will need to give money the pharmescutical(sp.?) companies and start taking anti-depressants, uck! Or be depressed and I already know what that will be like for me and my family! Also, I buy organic/fair trade when I can and I figure the banana farmers in Central and South America appreciate my buisiness. I wish I could buy directly from them, maybe someday that will happen.....

ME feet are a 5 ....would take less sheepies ;)

My sis and I discussed the "local" produce issue and we agreed that in the future we will try to buy as much local but buying what is shipped (organic at least )also supports the RAW/organic movements as a whole.

The question is, what are we most biologically adapted to? We are DEFINITELY biologically adapted to eating raw fruit. Cooked root veggies, etc, even though they may be local and more fresh, do not fit our constitution, and therefore would not nourish us as well as raw fruit, even shipped at a distance.

My 2 cents worth...

COuldn't you also freeze the stuf you like in advance o when it's out of season you have a little variety???

Also do you dehydrate?

I imagine eating seasonally is also more immunologically beneficial too.
