I was wondering if anyone had an idea for a pie crust that DIDN'T use any dates or fruit because combinging them with heavu food like nuts really is hard on my digestion. Is thre a way to keep the nuts together without dates??? agave seems too runny. any idea? thanks!

Okay not sure what you want, you don't want dates but you will accept agave'

sooooo,
here is what I use
dates
raisines
figs
bananas

as a sweetener

to hold together:
flax seeds
coconut oil
cocoa butter
tahini

so, there are some ideas, you can also use any kind of veggies in the crust, even tomatoes are sticky once dehydrated, this works in some recipes.

I like Rawkinlocs idea of not necessarily using any sweetner in the crust, as SAD pies, etc, don't use sweetener in the crust, soooooooo,

I think she uses nuts and oat flour, or maybe almond flour, you may wish to email her, and ask, as her recipes are excellent indeed.

I've successfully made pie crusts with no dates or raisins or fruit, period and used agave. It might "seem" too runny, but it's not.

The thing to remember is that SAD pie crusts really aren't sweet. When I make my crusts, I grind the nuts first in the food processor. Then, I add about a TBS. of oil (coconut or LIGHT olive) - the oil is optional but I came up with doing that because I remember most SAD crusts are made using flour, shortening and cold water...which leads me to the next thing, I add 1 TBS of cold water at a time until the crust dough is of desired consistency for me. I add a little bit of agave, but not a lot, you can add more if you want it sweeter. Chill the crust as you make the filling and then fill and chill to set.

I have used nuts and agave before. It worked for me. I ground the nuts really fine (I also put a little flax.) If your not vegan, you could use raw honey. That is a little stickier, but I had success with just using agave and nuts. I thought it tasted awesome as well.

thanks! that will work just perfectly! all of them!

RP, my reasoning is only because mixing fruit and heavy foods like nuts or oil, or even coconut flakes or coconut meat, is really hard on my digestion: gas.

I am experimenting with good things to make for thanksgiving for all my SAD aunts, uncles and grandparents! (and parents of course) I want to be able to indulge in the raw treats I make for them without having to become smelly. hahaha. So I am trying to think of all things that can be put out on the buffet table that don't involve fruits and that look appetizing. The fact that I am only eating... salad that I bring might cause a stir. I am going to have to make lots of stuffed crimini so my plate looks like it is fully of "substantial" food. Aie yaie yaie. Its no biggy, but thanks for everyone's suggestions! I can't wait to start preparing and experimenting!

maybe I'll make:
stuffed crimini (any idea what to stuff them with?)
mashed sweet potato (in vitamix: sweet potato, cinnamon)
salad with some sort of ... thanksgivingy dressing (no fruit remember! :))
and then a nice raw pie for dessert! pumpkin or... yam, or chocolate!

For my crusts only two ingredients:

raisins
nuts (usually "soaked" almonds when I remember)

mixed in food processor...that's it....

Yes, dates can work substituting for raisins....

No kidding...couldn't get easier for me. Others recipes here sound great, but prefer less ingredients for me easier and better. Been long time...maybe an Apple Pie could be sounding delish right now, but where are the raisins when I need them. I do have goji berries but hardly use them. It was a gift.

RP, I'm coming over! Now if I was closer I would, but CO here so just kidding.

I use just soaked almonds and oats for my pie crusts, if i want them a little sweet, i'll add some cinnamon, vanilla, or raw honey... or all 3

All the pie crusts in the book Rawvolution use ground almonds and agave nectar only. I can't remember the proportions, but there was enough agave to make it very sweet, too much in my opinion.

I agree with Rawkinlocs, conventional pie crusts are not sweet. It disrupts the balance of the pie to have a very sweet crust and then a sweet filling, I much prefer a plain tasting crust with a sweet filling - it's more complimentary and traditional tasting to me.

I remember my favorite thing about pie was the crust. :o

i use buckwheat for all of my pie crusts- fruit and the heavier avocado concoctions- it is soooo simple and really tastes great with anything- just grind about a cup and a half of sprouted and dried buckwheat (which I always have on hand- much easier) add in a tablespoon of coconut oil, some agave and salt to taste (I usually use neither, but when I do- just a tad) then add 1 tbsp. of cold water into the processor at a time until the buckwheat mixture seems as though it would stick together when pressed into a pie plate. When I make key lime pies, I add coconut to the mixture as well. enjoy!

I just made a pie today using your crust idea and I wanted to thank you--it's the best pie crust I've ever had! MUCH better than SAD crust!
