View Full Version : Help! Raw Newbie and lots of Gas today!

Hi all,
i am a newbie that has quickly and very easily caught on to Raw foods recently over the past 5 days.

while i am already noticing the benefits to my overall health and well-being, I am noticing that part of yesterday and all of today i have become extremely gassy! :eek: :confused:

I am NOT 100% raw nor am I 100% vegan.
now Saturday night i did go to a party and ate a very small amount of meat and cheese and some very light desserts... but i also had tons of veggies and most of the dishes to my fortune were raw and very tasty and healthy. and yeah i had a lot of wine.
i was amazed that i actually declined some of the chocolate cheesecake and some macaroni and cheese!!! this has always been so unlike my old self!!!
so that is definite progress. :D
when i did get home.. before going to bed i did notice how bloated my stomach was.

last night i also gave in and had a bit of boxed Risotto rice. it was okay but then i went for a second helping and it was just really GROSS! so my tastebuds definitely have changed and they are changing at a VERY rapid pace!!!

i dont know if this has to do with my rapid changes to my digestion... i have mostly been vegetarian for the last month on an attempt to detox with P&B shakes.

QUESTION:
when going on the raw transition...

does one experience changes in digestion that result in a lot of gas?

OR

could it be that i am still digesting foods from Saturday evening?

im curious to what your thoughts are. this is a very personal journey i am discovering. it is opening my eyes up to so many things i never thought i would ever look at.

I am so shocked that i am even toying with the idea of becoming vegetarian, but incorporating raw foods on a more frequent basis is just astounding enough as it is.

Hi Tweety,

The bloating and gas could have been from the cooked/processed foods you ate. It could also be from the way you combined your foods. If you eat meat, it will stay in your stomach a very long time. Then if you eat fruit afterwards, the fruit then stays in the stomach longer, causing it to ferment. Fruits should be eaten first as they pass through your system the fastest. Then veggies. Then cooked/processed foods. Meat takes the longest.

Go up to the search button at the top of the page and enter "food combinding" and see what you can find. There have been posts be people who were 100% raw but got bloated and gassy and it turned out it was how they combined their foods.

I also found myself quite gassy at first, but I've switched from eating meals to eating small amounts, often - you could almost say I'm grazing :D

This way I don't have to worry about how I combine my food - I just have a nibble on one or two things at a time.

I just watched a show on this yesterday, and the doctor said that, aside from beans :D the foods that produce the most gas are: meats, cheeses & eggs. It is from the sulfur content in them. ;) So, as someone earlier wrote: the cooked food got you!!! :rolleyes:

I am pretty aware.. intuitively... of what the problem was/is but its always nice to hear someone and bounce ideas back and forth.
i did do a search on the banana for "gas" but nothing came up.

The food combining you mention sounds sensible, and this is a new concept to me somewhat.
the important part is finding satiety in appetite with simple food combinations and not wanting to gorge!

I am thankful however, that I did decline some dishes that would have done more damage.

Parties are great and a lot of fun, but for me... entering this new way of living will be a challenge since the Holidays are basically upon us.
This is the real test I suppose.

I am learning!!!

According to Dr Shelton, and I have found this true at least in my case, cravings and gorging gets worse the more complex combinations of food one eats in the same meal.
