I bought this coconut butter at whole foods because no where can I find De-Coco Cream Coconut Oil. I have to order that online and pay shipping and all that. I went to the store and just needed some coconut oil for my recipe, however the only choices were that one and spectrums which didn't look too good. I see that a lot of raw stores sell this coconut butter too. It was only $10 for 16oz, good deal.

HOWEVER! When I tried it I realized it is not a coconut oil but a coconut meat concentrate like Tropical Traditions - http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/coconut_cream_concentrate.htm

I always assumed that coconut oil/butter were interchangable so when it was called coconut butter I thought it was the same thing, it looked like it. It has more of a coconut flavor then coconut oil and a very powdery texture to it, it doesn't just melt in the mouth like coconut oil.

Has anyone used this brand in recipes and this in place of coconut oil when a recipe calls for coconut butter/oil? Can it be used in replace of that or does it come out very strange? I don't want to ruin whole recipes with it cause ingredients are always expensive, and I don't want it to not turn out or taste powderly or weird. Please share your experience with this coconut butter. Thanks.

Hello,

I eat Artisana's coconut butter and love it very much. However, I don't think you can use it in place of coconut oil. You can, though, use it in place of almond butter and it's incredibly delicious. I've made amazing desserts this way.

I have this :D

I keep the jar in a warm place because the butter melts into oil and that is what I use for moisturizer.

It's the same thing, just solidified oil. Hope this helps!

Hi Coriander,

I'm wondering if we are talking about the same thing. The coconut butter mentioned above is made from dehydrate coconut, not just the oil from coconut. Artisana call it coconut 'butter' can be quite misleading.

I have this stuff, but it's not oil. I have this and coconut oil on the counter next to each other, the butter NEVER melts, just gets creamier.

It was really hot here and when I bought it, it was solid but I left it in the bathroom over night and I came back in in the morning and half the bottle was solid, the other half was oil...shocked me at first I thought that I had bought a ruined product :o
