Hi everyone,
I was helping a friend of mine celebrate, and she was drinking champagne.
Can you tell me whether its raw or not, and could I have joined her in a drink?
many thanks,
Kass.

Opinion:
-There are no raw food police. It is not raw, but if YOU think champagne is a very vital and healthful drink....then I encourage you to drink more of it....with or without friends! LOL.

Well I say it's raw, and I'll tell you why.
The wine part going in is raw, the grape juice is put to a first fermentation. When it is bottled, they add a little sugar (oooh, not raw... ooooh, raw police....). Then, the bottle is stoppered and the yeast ferment that sugar until it is all in the form of yeast farts or CO2, so the sugar is fermented away in this secondary fermentation.
Champagne is in truth more raw than nama shoyu. :p
Kir royales are sadly not raw (devastating news!).
However, mix a little fresh raspberry juice into the bubbly for a raw "kir framboise", or some peach juice for a "Bellini", and you're off to the races.
A good tip for champagne is buy a case of a decent Italian prosecco (Italian "champagne", WAY cheaper than champagne, but very good) and uncork with impunity!
raw can be decadent and joyful, it doesn't have to be an ascetic lifestyle.

The problem is that it is not vegan
organic wines are cleared with non-animal clearing agents. (eg bentonite). Clearing with animal products is prohibited in organic wines, or you can check with the winery for more info on what they use for clearing.
splinter, a good true raw wine will not have the second fermentation that the bubblies do -- the 2nd fermentation of sugar that makes the CO2 trapped in the bottle. Also on rawness of wine - beware wines made personally by people from concentrate kits or purchased juice, or some mass marketed domestic really cheap wines not made from fresh grapes, as the concentrates or juices when shipped like that have been heated. Most wine made from grapes by actual real wineries is truly raw, they do not cook the grape juice before fermenting it.
If you want to be assured of vegan, buy organic. Some wines will also mention on the label that they use a non-animal clearing process -- I have seen some non-organic wines that also state that no animal products were used.
Sharon,
And champagne has no wheat in it.
LOL, yet another bright side! no soy either... much less sodium... etc... ;)
Now can you rationalize my occasional filthy habit of smoking stogies, other than the presidential "but I didn't inhale"...
