There is a cutter you can buy with a long handle that works great for cutting coconuts down.

Eat the meat of the coconut and drink the water....yummy!

Yeah, also a mango tree,1-3 a orange trees, a lot of plantain trees, 1-2 papaya trees, also have some aloe in the frontyard garden.

My dad likes growing and planting stuff, I used to also when I was younger.

Oh man, this just brings to mind the memories of 2 days ago.....

I bought a coconut from the store, thinking that I should try something new this week and just ..go for it. SO I bring it home, print up a tutorial on how to open the darned thing, and start at it. I poked the holes, drained it, and then proceeded to have my dad whack it open in the front yard.
WELL. The meat is so hard! I guess that's the big difference between the Thai (young) coconuts and...the mature kind. I will never buy this kind again.
After scraping and poking and twisting at it with a knife, AND cutting my thumb in the process, I got maybe a cup of shredded coconut, and now I'm afraid to do anything to it, along with the jar of coconut water in my fridge -_-

Is there any secret I should be aware of?

Get a good cononut-chopper-person. :)

Mature coconuts are MUCH harder to open then the younger green ones, or so it seems...

It's not really the opening process that bugs me, it's just the fact that the meat is SO hard to remove. Simple "scraping" isn't good enough, it required allotttt of effort.
I just need to find an asian market around here that carries the Thai Coconuts.
I watched a video on Gliving.tv and the lady easily just scooped the meat from the inside with a spoon. *Sigh*
If only my experiance was that pleasant.

I got my technique down to an art. I can have one of those hard coconuts cracked and all of the meat out in less then 1 minute. I should video myself and sell the how-to video to the masses, LOL!

Man i'm getting hungry for coco-meat now *goes outside*.

And theres another coconut tree in the backyard, but it's dead, think lightning struck it, some birds have made a new home with it :)

edit: Mature coco-meat is a lot harder than the green ones too. I eat it straight with the coconut skin that it's stuck to.

*Stares, blankly*

I envy you! :D

Well, what about the wood-ish looking stuff that sticks to the meat? It was too dry and hard to peel it, but it wouldn't break off either...Ahh I'm just frustrated.
I told my mom: "If I lived in a society where all we had to live on was coconuts, I would have been dead yeeears ago."

Smilingkyle, you can eat the brown part that sticks on it - no need to peel it off. I've been eating that part all my life without harm. I've found that the easiest way for me to get the meat out of a mature coconut is by using a dull knife (like a dinner knife), stick it between the hard shell and the brown skin and sort of twist it until a chunk pops off. Once you get the technique down, it's pretty fast. And drink that coconut water! It's really yummy!! Good luck!

Thankyou all SO much. I was talking (again) with my mom today:
we were discussing why so many people don't eat nutricious foods, and we came to the conclusion that most people we know haven't been brought up with the direction on how to choose and prepare real foods.
Sure, we all learn how to pick the cheapest can off the shelf and be a "thrifty" shopper, and how to use a microwave, but in the area of CA that I'm in....it's pretty sad. I myself am VERY new to the idea of "produce shopping". I have to look stuff up online almost every day! When stuff is ripe, what to look for, how to cut stuff open...good thing that I like learning new stuff everyday!
