Hi,
I'm new here. Sorry I'm just jumping in right away before going to the meet and greet area. I just needed to ask a quick question. I just whacked open my first coconut. It's not a baby coconut, just a regualar brown one that my husband picked up today for me. The problem is that the inside is brown also! It has a lot of white but there is a lot of brown in there too. And there was no juice.
I've always thought coconuts were suppose to be white on the inside. My husband (who is not around now)earlier told me on Alissa's dvd she opens the brown kind later on. I saw her open up the baby coconut in the first few minutes of the dvd. I didn't get to watch the other part because my kids were talking to loud and my son was dying for me to open the coconut. So I just looked up on the web how to open the coconut. I'm sure Alissa's coconut was white on the inside. Sorry for rambling. BTW, hello everybody, so glad to be here!

Did you open it all the way and see if there was any white? There is a brown fiber layer on the outside of the white meat. Some people peel that off with a veggie peeler, but I eat it all. Never really bothered me, but it is pretty thin and fiberous.

If there was no water inside, it may have started to turn bad...Did it fizzle when it was popped open? That is a sign it is fermenting. Did it smell fresh, or fermented? Was there moldy spots on it?

I eat the mature type more these days, I prefer them. I have learned to shake them to listen for plenty of water, and to check the outside for signs of mold. I have noticed that when they are starting to go bad, when you crack them open the meat peels out a lot easier then when they are fresher. I know some people will heat them to loosen the meat, but as a raw foodist I don't do that.

If there was NO meat, I would be surprised....but then you may have a mutant nut...It could happen... :)

Hi Cassy,

Thanks so much for the reply. You are full of information about coconuts!
Yes, I did open it all the way and it looks more moldy than brown fibrous stuff in it. I'm glad you told me about the fibrous stuff so next time I'll know that's ok for it to be in there. Kind of like when you take the seed out of the avacodo it sounds. There is that brown thin skin there. There was no water, and the coconut smells a little bad so I don't dare try it.
Thanks a bunch for the help though!
