Hey guys,

I'm very new to raw foods and I love the idea of eating mostly raw.... I bought Livin' bread from a raw food restaurant close by and I have terrible stomachaches and gas (sorry)..... what's going on? my body doesn't tolerate the ingreadients?? The bread is made of Carrots, flax seeds, buckwheat, olive oil and celtic sea salt.... it's deliciuos but it gives me pain.....

I've been about 70% raw this past week and my stomach feels AWEFUL.... I have pain, gas, and nausea.... but now the livin bread makes it worse....

What should I do????? maybe raw is not for me because I have mild IBS???

Please help, I'm very dissapointed :(

Raw is the best thing for IBS. Dehydrated, complicated foods, may not always be. So, let your body guide you (if something does not sit well in your tummy, then your body does not like it!). Tip: try easy-to-digest foods. Fruit, salads, some simple blended soups perhaps, not too many ingredients. Simple rules of food combining will help too.

Thanks for your reply!!!! What are the rules for food combining? I have no clue what you are talking about! Thanks :)

Rules of proper food combining tell us which foods can be combined for easy digestion. For example, sweet fruit should not be combined with fats, some fruit should be eaten alone (melons) etc. See the summary at:

I bet you are detoxing too, which is good.

I've had IBS most of my life, but since eating better, it's pretty much gone away. The only time I had a problem is when I made the awesome chili recipe that was on the board about a month ago and ate it constantly for about 1 1/2 weeks. Oh, and the 2 times I went off plan and ate some shrimp. Not a good plan for me. Enough to upset anyone's intestines, I think! Keep on keepin' on, be patient and you'll probably be in great "tummy health" in no time!

With the flax seeds in there, you probably want to make sure you get plenty of liquids, either water or lots of fruit.

I HAD very serious IBS and heartburn which was complicated by a sick gallbladder (didn't know it) and I heaved and heaved and coughed and heaved some more - even all the neighbors could hear it - it was horrible - I did this every day for YEARS! Last year my gallbladder was removed. I still had horrible IBS and heartburn. Apparently from reading this site I have learned that gallbladder removal was possibly not necessary but I am not sure what I could have done. Also I think the doctors don't know much because all these problems occur in one digestive system so why so many different names for the different parts - it is part of one big syndrome - allergic to SAD! Anyway - I am SOOOOOOoooooooOO much better. I still have problems - if I have a SAD slip or do too much of something like carrot juice - or garlic in a smoothie can bring my heartburn back. But I am better. This by far was not my only or major illness and I am seeing improvement in ALL areas with raw. I didn't want any fruit until recently when the weather got cooler. I also did not want any nuts and I DID do alot of MONO eating - that is when you just eat one item at a time and don't have any other food item with it. (I like mono eating alot and I think it helps me to learn reactions that I have to foods and also gives me ideas of new to me combinations I might try and it helped with my energy levels and to satiate my new raw frantic hunger) I have not worried about nutrition as I am an adult and my body has slowed down and mostly I trust it to take what it needs and hold onto it for awhile if it needs to combine it with something else. I am just not worrying about it. When I started I only wanted to do green leafy things. So I am following my raw cravings and I am sure that if I went to see a food specialist of nutrition or some such thing I would be told that I am eating just what I need. My birthday is coming up and I finally get to receive Alissa's book and DVD and I hope that will help me get my footing so to speak as I have problem with SAD slips as well as encourage me with the recipes and techniques. Now I just have to get my son to loan me his Playstation so I can watch it when I get it! I am totally sold on RAW!

Thank you all for your replies.... today I had to get back to the bland diet from the eating for IBS book until my colon settles down.... this is depressing... I really want to eat raw only...
today I only had saltine crackers, 2 bananas, a bit of mango, and a bit of cereal with rice milk.... these are the things that I can only eat when my stomach feels so sick......

now I'm afraid of eating raw veggies again.... i don't want the pain and gas to come back....

I don't know what to do????????

i found that the pain and gas occur when your body is detoxing. it will happen for a couple of days. try to eat simply, no broccoli :) take 1-2 days of pain, and then suddenly it will be gone and you'll be able to eat fine. i think part of it is that your body is kinda in shock that you're eating veggies and part of it is that your body is trying to release the other foods that may be stored in your colon that the veggies are clearing out. also, what they said about food combining is true too. some foods shouldn't be eaten together because they digest at different rates and that can cause pain and bloating as some begin to ferment when they can't complete the digestion process quickly enough.

For food combining, how do I clasify seaweed... nori.... I made nori rolls the other day... really good, and I think they didn't give me problems... the filling was carrots, avocado, tomatoes, zuccini, and olives.

TIA,

Carla

I have seen people post here about low stomach acid and other posts about gas and bloating and am wondering how much that and needing friendly bugs - acidopholus and probiotics - have to do with the IBS syndrome? I did probiotics when I started. Been needing to find a good link to some as I have been seeming gassy and bloated myself. Laylay posted a good link once but my 'puter crashed and I can no longer find it.

I do take a probiotic called Jarrows Bidufidus (sp?).... not sure if it helps...

Hello Carla, Hope you are able to figure out a way to stay raw and hope you feel better soon. :)

And by the way, which Raw restaurant close by did you go to?? I don't know of any in this immediate area. Just curious-I'd give anything to have one in this area.
