I just bought tahini the other day and to be honest I kind of dont like it. I do, however, have Trader Joe's brand peanut butter in the fridge that is just made out of peanuts. It is not raw, but then again I dont think the tahini is either...can I get some of your opinions about using peanut butter as my "nut butter" of choice? :)

Can your toungue possibly change its mind? Tahini blended with oranges or, even better, strawberries, makes a delish salad dressing...

I was just going to say that I opened my bottle of tahini today and did not like the taste. It went very well as the main ingredient in a salad dressing!!
1.5tsp tahini
1/4 tsp honey or other sweetener
lemon juice to taste
I used this over sliced cucumbers, grated carrots, sliced red pepper, and sliced celery. YUM!!
Peanut butter I think has too much protein... Peanuts make me ill. I mean, think of roasting a bean and grinding it into butter... ugh!

I will continue to work on the tahini situation...I have a whole jar of it and plenty of oranges and stuff to experiment with it. Is it raw, though? I am just curious.

tahini plus honey is like a dessert.
I put tahini on bananas.
Tahini with almond butter on bananas.
And something else I think... oh yeah, tahini on Dates.

thanks so much for your help...tell me about peanut butter, though. It does have a lot of protein, but I am not terribly worried about that as it is a plant protein and not animal derived. I have never really looked for raw PB, but is it available anywhere? Is it not really an ideal nut to consume?

Tahini by itself if awful. Mix it with other stuff (for a salad dressing and what not) and it's GREAT!

I am SO HAPPY you said that it tastes awful alone! Thats how I feel about it! I will try the other stuff suggested in this thread to give it some life and I'll bet by the end of that new jar I bought I will actually love it! :)

Tahini is sometimes raw, other times not. If it doesn't say raw on the jar U can be pretty sure it's not. Also, some that claim to be raw are actually heated in the processing. Like almond butter, etc. it can be tricky finding "truly raw" versions.
Peanuts are not actually nuts at all, but legumes, and are known for containing molds, so are avoided by many raw foodists......... I used to love peanut butter too........

I bought RAW Tahani in a Jar. RawPriest has a recipe for Gooey Motzerella Cheese that uses RAW Tahani.
I don't think you can get RAW peanut butter unless you make it yourself.......

I wouldn't do peanut butter because most peanuts are loaded with aflatoxin, which is a carcinogen (causes cancer). Why not try raw almond butter? Raw pumpkin seed butter is also very good and tastes somewhat similar to peanut butter. Rejuvenative Foods has all kinds of raw nut butters to choose from, including Brazil nut butter, Hemp seed butter, Sunflower butter, pumpkin seed butter, almond butter. I think their website is www.rejuvenative foods.com.
I didn't like tahini at first either, but I grew to like it. If you add some sweetner to it, it helps because it is bitter.

I read about aflatoxin in The China Study! That IS cancer-causing! I have been feeding my children peanut butter for YEARS!!! NO MORE PEANUT BUTTER!!!

Definitely toss the peanut butter..it is no food fit for a raw foodist. I also thinkTahini is not good by itself but can be the food of gods and goddesses when prepared right. I like to take a couple scoops of it. Squeeze in lemon to taste and lots of garlic. Then add water to get a salad dressing consistency. It's so good that I can drink it straight, but is also excellent as dressing, marinades etc. Raw tahini will be labelled raw and even then I'm not positive it is. I think perhaps it can be made easily (it's just blended sesame seeds).

I eat Shuar peanuts, which have been tested to contain no aflatoxin. I have not tried making butter out of them.

tahini may or may not be raw, if it is NOT labeled raw, then it isn't.
Peanut butter is not raw, but if you wish to consume a non raw product, then it is up to you.

OMG I absolutely LOVE Tahini!!! I started eating more raw recently.... I'm trying to have 3 meals raw and all my snacks raw and only one cooked meal (for now)...
Try making this simple but amazing salad dressing:
1. raw tahini
2. a bit of water to make it less thick
3. Lime juice
4. sea salt... don't know if you guys eat salt or not...
mix well and pour over chopped tomatoes and avocado.... YUM!!! This is soooo GOOD! :D

OOo sounds great CarlaVeg!
I use salt, but use himalayan crystal salt as a brine.
