I've realized that I really hate flax seeds.... the flax (ground or whole) feels so odd on my tongue that it just makes me gag. :p Unfortunately, many recipes that others rave about have flax seeds in them (such as that onion bread I've been wanting to try)...... any suggestions for substitutions? Thanks in advance for any info you can provide - I appreciate it!

I don't care for flax seeds either, however I can eat them in the onion bread, as I don't taste them at all, I use the flax seed ground into meal, it holds the onion bread together, you could just use more sunflower seeds, but your bread will be crumbly

Mary, the thing is...depending on the recipe, the flax may be depended on for binding it together. You could "try" using something else (not sure what) or omitting it, but your results may not be nearly the same *shrugs*.
I know that I've had people to taste my crackers with ground (as opposed to whole) flax seeds who said they never liked crackers for the very reason you stated, but they loved mine :) Like Rawpriestess, I don't taste the flax in the onion bread or even in crackers made with ground flax either.
Perhaps you could just lessen the amount of flax used but not totally omit it altogether. Yeah, try using about 1/4 to 1/2 less than the recipe calls for and see if that helps.

Maybe chia seed (also called salba seed?)
I don't know how it tastes in crackers, but someone has to be the first to try :D

Thanks to all of your for your input. Since it's a 'feel' problem more than a 'taste' problem with me, I think I'll try subbing w/some other seeds or nuts and see what happens.... I'll see if I can find Chia seeds - if they don't work in the recipes, I can spread them all over my head, water regularly and be all set to give myself away as a Christmas gift when they sprout! Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia!! ;)

I know exactly what you're talking about..that wierd texture!! Are you using golden flax seed or the brown flax seed? Well, belive it or not, for me I really notice that wierd texture with the golden flax seeds and cannot eat them at all! I tried the brown flax seeds and love them!! Most people say the brown have a stronger taste but the texture is much better for me.

Wow, thanks for the tip, MangoMommy! It never occurred to me that the brown ones might be different in that respect. I'll give that a shot before experimenting with chia seeds, or sesame seeds (I thought that might work, only because they look so similar).

Don't let it stop you making onion bread with ground flax seeds. As Rawpriestess said, you won't taste them and onion bread is fab.
