I saw a Vitamix demo at Costco today. The woman made soup that she said never gets over 95 degrees. Well, I tasted the vege soup. It was very good, but I wonder, if this is true about the degrees, and if so, could this still be considered raw? She said that it was considered raw food because it has not been heated above 118 degrees.

So, what do you think?

Yeah, there is a tiny bit of disagreement over what temperature begins to kill enzymes and nutrients, but 118 is commonly believed to be the threshold. Heating to 95 deg won't kill the beneficial things we want from our raw food. Also, think about how bananas, for example, grow in places that often reach 95 deg or above...

Seems raw to me!

What was in the soup, do you remember by any chance? I haven't tried a soup yet. I'm thinking of trying Alissa's Corn Chowder. I have to stop at the store after work tonight and get some corn.

Actually, my concern was if the Vitamix truly does not heat the soup up past the 95 degrees that she said.

What I'd do is get a thermometer and stick it in the soup immediately after turning off the Vitamix. The one I use is made by Pyrex and has a 120 mm metal rod with a plastic thing at one end and an LCD.

If you know how many watts you're running the Vitamix at when making soup, you can estimate how long you can run it before the soup overheats. For every 1 kW of power and 240 g of soup, it warms it 1 degree Celsius per second.

Well, they say if you can stick your finger in it w/out burning then it's still raw. Just 'member to turn off the blender first. :)

I make the raw soup in my Vita Mix all the time, it never gets too hot, but I do use my finger to check it, and I only use raw ingredients, I don't use the boulion they suggest, I make my own boulion by dehydrating veggies and grinding them up

I think if you blended a very very long time it would get too hot. I just blend until it's nicely warm.

Hey Sheryl - your avatar? Is that David Blaine?
sorry, I know I've gone off the topic here, but I wanted to ask her.
