I went to the store, filled my bag with fruits and veggies, then topped it off with frozen fruit pulps and headed for the checkout. The cashier pulled out a leek and asked "Is this bok choy?". I've confused yu choy, gai lan, and sherlihong before, but how could one mistake leek for bok choy? They don't carry bok choy as often as leek, if they ever do. (The four Chinese vegetables are all in the genus Brassica with the cabbage.)

She just missed that day of training, that is why she didn't know (*-*).

Hehe, I've had all sorts of questions about my fruit and veggies before. I had a cashier today exclaim over the price of a star fruit.. it was .88 cents.. I thought I had gotten a deal and she thought it was highway robbery *lol*

hehe, me too! Many of the cashiers don't know what the various fruits/veggies are. They've never had them.

Someone asked me about kale, avocado, plantains, radishes, and beets. All on seperate occassions.

Buying figs causes havoc in my local supermarkets. It's rare to find a checkout person who knows what they are are. I'm happy to expound their virtues!

Swiss chard and collard greens and the various forms of kale seem to be unknown to most people. Clerks and friends at home when I am showing them how to juice or make a smoothie! It is fun to talk to them about new veggies and fruits they aren't familiar with. I have converted my brother to a swiss chard kinda guy now!

I had a young cashier once not know what a cantaloupe was! That one really shocked me. Especially since they always have tons of them in the stores here.

Isn't that the truth? Yet this same person will think nothing of spending 3 bucks for a burger barf meal or a pack of smokes!
I too have educated lots of cashiers. Now I go through the self-scan line. I always wanted to grow up and be a cashier! LOL!
One morning I had spotted some lychee. Didn't know what they were, but proudly put my four up in front of the cashier. She giggled and said, "Okay, I know this is a test and I've failed. What are these?" "I have no clue" I said. We both got a lesson. I had to go on line and look up what they were and then play around with them and finally get the courage up to eat one. I didn't really care for it. Too perfumy tasting for my liking...
cool subject matter though...

I almost forgot the time when a cashier held up my bag of dates and said "raisins right?" haha! I wanted to laugh so bad. I guess they look like raisins on steroids or something. :p
