Lol
This was a gross packaged bacon smell, or something. Like the already cooked crumbles in the plastic package.

They have never smelled like this before

I think I know what you mean. They do get a kind of smoky smell and taste sometimes. Sounds like those were spoiled. Bummer.

jenna, when avocados are slightly squishy, not hard squishy, but slighty squishy, then they are ready. After that, refrigerate them. Or eat em all.

I refuse to buy conventoinal anymore cause I agree they all smell baconey. If they werent try only buying organic. If they were organic I have no idea why they smelled that way.

It's funny you said that, I have been having weird "smells" lately... one night I was cutting up a watermelon and it smelled rotten, like the bottom of a basement in a house built in 1600. I tasted it and it tasted fine, so I asked my mom to smell it and she said it smelled like watermelon.

I've had bacony avocados too. It's very weird.

Yeah, some avos do taste and smell like bacon. There is actually a variety called "Bacon Avocado," though I've had hass avocados that taste like bacon too. They seem to get that way when they're a little too ripe... it also depends on the crop.

I'm sure it was going bad. And the pit was sprouting! Years ago I sprouted one (stuck toothpics on three sides and dangled it over a glass of water). It actually grew quite big. It was neat. It grew roots down into the water and a long, trailing plant...
Bacon though? Ugh!!!
I'm at the point where I don't like any cooked smells. Esp. at work when folks throw in some kind of pre-packaged microwave crap. It smells like plastic and oozing gunk. Eeewwww!!! :p

Yea, I've had that too. It's SO gross to me. Was there a little bit darker green or brownish on it? That's waht happened to me when it tasted like bacon. I thought I was the ONLY one that tasted that lol, I guess not!

I think the bacon smell might be from the rancid fat within an avocado a little past it's prime.

You know, this is funny because I had an avo the other day, and thought to myself that it tasted like scrambled eggs!!! So together we have bacon and eggs....... EWE!

I do have to say that the avo was very good though.... :)

I've had that before and eaten them and they taste bacony too. I don't care for them and I do think they are over ripe at that stage. Ick. Sorry they got wasted!

I've had that happen when they're too ripe. And if you taste a bit of it, it tastes like bacon too! Gross!!!!

I've not been having good luck with avocados myself lately. They look good at the store, have just the right degree of pliability to appear sufficiently ripe, and then... yuck. When I open them up, they're starting to sprout, have brown spots inside, and smell/taste bad. (I try to eat around the grossest parts so as not to waste.)
I'm hoping this is just temporary- I've been able to purchase really tasty avocados in the past.

As soon as avocados get ripe, you gotta eat! When you buy them at the store make sure their hard like a rock (bob seger input here).

Jujube is right, there is such a thing as "Bacon Avocados" - an old friend grew them in her backyard - although I've never seen one in the store labled as such. I have had these bacon-smelling avos, too, especially this summer (and both organic & conventional). My son got 'em, too. Ours came from the Whole Foods Stores in Walnut Creek and Sacramento, so not that far from you, Jenna... maybe just an odd batch? I ate mine, as they were all OK otherwise, and they tasted fine, but it was definately not as appetizing as a 'normal' avocado. My son said that he took his back to Whole Foods and they refunded his $$ with no questions asked. Oh, I've also had lots of them with a sprouting seed this summer, too. But, as with the bacon ones, they were fine otherwise, very yummy.

Why all the hostility towards bacon ?

Taste of bacon > Taste of avocado
