View Full Version : The skin-thread (your experiences?)
Hi everyone
You might have noticed this interests me a lot *lol* (started a couple of threads)...
BUT this one is different...
I am in the middle of detox and my skin is HORRIBLE - I don't even feel like seeing my wonderful bf because I'm worried he'll be all chocked to see me like this (bf. going raw my skin was clear...)
Well, I've already heard from some of you that it takes time etc - but in this thread I'd love to have some experiences from some of you guys who are dealing with acne due too detox OR people who's acne cleared up completely - I just need to hear some sunshine-stories :(
Love alba :)

I know you'll have lots of responses where acne is concerned, so although I can't offer my experience with that I can say that I have had a large pore on my cheek for a number of years that started as a black head and just got bigger and looking more like a mole. I of course picked at it making it worse and I thought this large pore was with me to stay!
Well, after my first year of high raw (been doing this for about 3 1/2 years now) that pore started getting smaller and now is only noticeable to me! I think that is very amazing, along with a small stye or cyst that I've had on an eyelid for many years... well it is now gone too.
I know it is my eating habits as nothing else changed in my lifestyle. My skin is very clear and smooth now, just a real difference from my previous vegetarian diet (cooked and sometimes very junky!).
So I have to say that raw has made some awesome changes in my facial skin!

After a week of detox, all the bumps on my arms went away. My face looks incredibly clear, and my skin just GLOWS
A few suggestions for you: Have a nice hot hot hot shower, and the blast the cold water (no heat) for a little bit to close all your pores. This imitates a sweat lodge and really helps clear everything out. I love it. Every time I feel sick I do this, and I feel so much better. My skin and my body loves it.
Also, try drinking a few glasses of FRESH carrot juice each morning. You may go orange for a little bit, but it will go away. Try it!!

From my experience, my skin is pretty clear on raw. But my skin is clear on cooked as long as I don't eat dairy products.
It's kind of odd that yours was clear before and is breaking out now. I know what you mean. There are times I won't hang out with a new guy or whatever if i'm all broken out because I'm so uncomfortable and self conscious. Sorry I don't have any advice for you other than to wait it out (which TOTALLY sucks. :()

Must be detox. Well try being in your 5th decade and having the blasted things popping out of your face! My skin does alot of elimination for me. I often wonder how mine has so much to eliminate and others do not. I have always heard that drinking carrot juice clears up the face skin but I understand that it is currently out of favor.

After being raw for 9 months, my skin was still a total mess. Then I started drinking green smoothies. One in morning and one at night. I use like 2 bags of greens. My skin is completely clear now. Maybe try upping your greens?

My skin was clear before raw. I have been 49 days raw, and my face is covered in tiny zits or clogged pores, and there are also bigger cystic ones from time to time. I want it to clear up so much, I don't even express. I am going to wait it out, but I hope the wait isn't too much longer.

The bumps on the back of my upper arms disappeared. Skin tags on my chest and trunk are disappearing too. My face glows and the area around my eyes is smooth-- no longer puffy and baggy.

I think my skin is somewhat smoother and softer. As far as my face goes, not as many breakouts of pimples but still get them from time to time. Not sure what natural product to use on my face as a moisturizer, to keep it moist as I have dry skin, but not too oily.
I used to have dry scaly skin behind my ears all my life and I hated it(Eczema??). I've had a dermatoligist prescribe some creams, but it would always come back, and before raw, just from green smoothies 3x weekly, it has VANISHED, thank God. I couldn't believe it. I can't wait to go thru the winter and see if If my skin is better than it usually is.
Hello there!!
Thank you so much for your wonderful replies!!
Just to clear things up:
I ear mainly greens - like 80% vegetables and 20% non-sweet/ semi-sweet fruit (like sour apples, pears, avos etc)
I don't eat a lut of nuts - maybe one/two a day ....don't really like them..
But I do eat a lot of oils (coconut, flaxseed, olive oil - they are all unprocessed) in order to keep my weight up.
I've started to make green-smoothies w. kale, avo, aplle and lemon and drink them 1-2 times/day.
My skin is actually starting to clear up! - little by little....
I am quite happy although some of your stories scare me a little! I had hoped for someone who was like "arh well, my skin was the same for the first two months, and now it's better than ever" - hehe ....
But I'm am so grateful that you are sharing your experineces!
Keep em' coming!

Hey Alba! I have been raw for a couple of months now. Before going raw I had very few skin problems. For the most part, my face was always fairly clear and people often complimented me on it. A couple weeks after going raw I began to break out in quite a few little zits (almost more like tiny boils though because they didn't look like normal zits). Anyway, I just stuck it out, and now they have all cleared up and my skin looks better than ever! It is even softer and smoother than before. I know it sucks, but I think you've just gotta hang in there. And I will try and remember to do the same if my skin starts acting up again.
;)
YAY! - sounds like it's the same thing I have...like a zillion tiny tiny bumps on my forehead :( ugh! Hate em, but this morning I can really see them diappearing, - hope it lasts! I'm gonna wait it out - I'm tough enough :D

When I first went raw (first few days) my skin had a couple of breakouts, but now its really clearing up, my spot scars (from when I picked my spots :o ) are fading, and now my skin tone is getting more bright and even toned. And its only been just over a week of between 95% - 100% raw!! Oh and also the skin all over my body, not just my face, is so much smoother. Yay! lol. So I guess Ive been quite lucky compared to others. This should happen to everyone at some point, as I think (more like hope!!) that Ive detoxed everything - I never really was that 'toxic' lol as Ive been vegetarian most of my life, and hardly had any sugar (havent had any for nearly two years) and havent had milk for years and years. Yeah, so thats my skin story!

I have been raw for a month and I have developed a couple of rashes and what looks like to be chicken pox. Some are fading but new ones replace it. I was a meat and potatoes kinda guy my whole life, so I did expect this. I am greatful it is not worse. I look forward to the healing.... Hopefully get ride of some of the small wrinkles that ages you.
ALba - you are a very pretty woman, by staying raw you will probably stay that way for life!

i have noticed a huge difference in my hair as well....super thick and shiny...people have asked me if i am wearing extensions....have not noticed a difference in my nails so much....
when i was drinking wheatgrass daily....the acne literally fell off of my face...
it was really amazing....
although i have slowed down on the wheatgrass because it sorta makes me sick to my stomach at this time...which to me is a sign that my body is not needing it or interested in it at this time....

I used apple cider vinegar on my face yesterday with a cotton ball. I also used it to rinse my hair. My face definately had a glow and my hair was really soft. Then I use pure unrefined Shea butter with lavender as a moisturizer.

I had really good skin before going raw... within the first 2 months I broke out SO bad around my mouth and chin. I mean BAD, it was a solid mass of red and I swelled like I had gotten botox! It was horrrrriiiddd. Itchy and just nasty. Major detox! But it went away, and now I only get spots if I'm going through detox. It's almost two years now. Skin on body smoothed out so much, brand new toe nails, much softer facial skin, and the one wrinkle I had has filled in! I noticed a difference in my nails with the MSM, and wheatgrass does a body good! Got grass? LOL.

I feel like my detox is going in horrible spurts. I'm 2 mos. raw and zitified. My skin was great in early raw - dh even said (and he certainly doesn't want to encourage this raw bender I'm on) that my skin felt like an avocado, lol. Over the weekend I felt like I was coming down with something (I'm assuming detox since I'm not sick) and now I have several nice size blemishes. I don't need this right now, aaargh.

Alba,
When I went high raw my acne cleared up completely! I used to have pimples all over my forehead-this happened when I went vegan about 3-4 years prior. It could of been detox from cheese etc. They cleared up after being vegan for awhile but I always had to work to keep my face completely pimple free.
Going high raw also coincided with starting a new cleanser so I'm not really sure if I should attribute my skin clearing up to raw or the cleanser. I think it was more raw though. I went off raw for about 2 weeks and I got a few pimples which I haven't gotten since going raw. I'm not sure which foods trigger them but I'd like to find out and avoid them forever.
As for wrinkles-sorry to say but I'm almost 27 and my lines got worse when I went raw. This was a very discouraging to me. I lost a little weight in my face so the wrinkles became more pronounced.
I hope the more I'm on raw the less I will have though.
All in all my skin hasn't been this nice for years!

I wanted to add that I think probiotics are great for the skin. I was taking a yeast-defense with probiotics when I was a vegan and I got so many compliments when I was on that. People would compliment continually on how beautiful and flawless my skin was. It takes a few weeks to see results though.
This reminds me that I should take that again!
Thanks to everyone for sharing your stories! It has helped me to hang in therem and now -
I don't believe it, but my skin is 90% clear! It took a little over three days to go from  to :) - it's not :D yet but I am confident it will be in time - so to all of you who are going through what I am - give it time although it SUCKS BIGTIME!

Update!
my skin has now gone from :) to super :D !
And the Keratosis pilaris (small bumps) on my upperarms is fading!
I am sooooo happy that it really was "only" detox - when you are in the middle of it it's easy to get discouraged,...
but now I am really pleased w. myself for staying raw!!
hope this thread will help some of you dealing w. skin-detox right now!

I was just about to post a new post on how horrible my skin is. I have been raw for 2 months and it is HORRIBLE. I have tried to add 2 green smoothies a day for a week, but it hasn't done anything yet. I do overindulge on the nuts... Alba... how long did u have to go through detox??? I can't bear this any longer, it is hideous!

Hey Sungoddess,
I always break out whenever I overdo fats of any kind on raw. And it clears up fairly quickly when I cut down my fat intake to around 30% of my diet.

thanks, tomorrow I am really going to try to start this. I know that this is probably a huge contributor as WELL as a detox going on. it is just so hard for me to cut them out dramatically. Aie yaie yaie.
Hi sungodess !
:( I'm sad to hear that your skin hasn't cleared up yet - it is so darn frustrating! Well, it took me - about two months, little less maybe -
regarding the fats - I do eat A LOT (like 3/day) of avo's and some oil - but I very rarely eat nuts! almost never...
My diest consists mainly of greens (salads for lunch and dinner) and some not-so-sweet fruit (non-tropic) like sour aples (uh...gotta love those :p ), plums and pears - It's the fruit that has it's origin in the area that is probably my gene-pool (did that even make sense) - I am a typical skandinav.
I really hope your skin clears up soon - were you a junk eater before raw? I wasn't at all (no sugar, sweet fruit, grains or milk) but I DID eat a lot (!) of meat (which I've totally given up...and no cravings...it feels amazing not to eat dead flesh anymore - who would have thought that? )
I just wondered, that maybe if you used to eat really badly it may take a little longer...

BTw. I take a probiotic pill and a msm capsule/day, eat a tbs. of virging coconut oil and get lots of sleep. that has helped tremendously! :D

I'm not raw, but I used to drink a LOT of two different kinds of juice (and only those two kinds) and my skin became very clear, very bright, and really nice in about 2 weeks.
One juice I always drank was:
2 handfuls of spinach (if you're worried about spinach right now, then maybe do romaine instead)
2-3 carrots
1 apple
2-3 leaves of collard greens (with stems)
a few leaves of green cabbage
half a lemon (which is about the only thing you can taste in the whole mix)
The other juice I drank all the time was:
half of a beet
a few beet greens with stems
1 apple
3-4 carrots
a few slices of pineapple
This juice tasted SOOOOOO good!
I've never had the greatest skin, and it's certainly never glowed...until I started drinking these juices every day. I didn't drink both in the same day, but I'd just alternate them every other day. One day, the green juice; the next day, the beet juice. They both taste really good and like I said, my skin looked beautiful after about 2 weeks.
Good luck!

I am only 18, but I drank aspartame everyday for about three years of high school. AND I was on a horribly horribly strong perscription medication. So I presume that there IS a lot to get out. I appreciate this thread, and am starting today, a challenge to cut down my fat consumption significantly because I hear that that alone can speed up the detox process. AH. ok, I have high hopes!!!!
for those of you that break out after eating nuts, does the same happen after eating seeds? i believe nuts have a negative effect on my skin, but i enjoy snacking on something "heavier" occasionally...i haven't really noticed whether i break out after eating sunflower or pumpkin seeds- but i guess i don't really pay that close of attention- just wondering what your experiences are.

update: skin has now gone from :D to :) to :( to :) again - so it seems to be coming in cycles? I don't know -
I have a question: has anyone heard of (or experienced) anyone who had acne due to detox for more than a couple of months...
I am getting dicouraged :o having negative thoughts
is raw really all that? etc. so I'd be happy if someone would tell me that, yes it is!! and not to worry and that the exact same thing happened to them and now their skin is perfection....anyone?

found this today:
Location of Acne & What It Means
* forehead ~ small intestine, constipation
* temples ~ liver, gall bladder, toxins
* cheeks ~ stomach, digestive problem
* chin ~ gynecological areas, hormonal imbalance
* under chin ~ large intestine, toxins
maybe this will help better explain why some people clear up with raw, and some dont. maybe the people with forhead acne clear up quicker bc raw helps constipation, and other with chin and cheek acne (me) take a longer time bc its hormonal and digestive related?
thoughts?

GEEEEZZZZ I WISHHHH my skin would look like yours. You think yours is bad, U should see mine, Its getting better tho!
But I know that if your not used to acne than it really sucks. Keep the head high, and up the greens, drink water, get the lymph moving, make sure digestion is well, etc, and express any anger or repressed emotions. I have been through it all.
Keep going!

And EYB, I think that that key to what acne from different areas means DEFINITELY means something. I have lot on my temples and under the chin which I never have before raw, and the cysts that used to be on my cheeks went away and are now only on my chin.... it makes sense!
BTW, how is ur fast? Have you started 811 yet?

when i was drinking wheatgrass daily...my skin was the most amazing.....

Meinleben has the right idea.....I am in my 40's and wheat grass does amazing things for my skin also! last week I started back on a 1 oz shot every other day. The fine lines (smile lines ;) )
under my eyes reduced and two hormonal break-outs cleared within 24 hours and a freckle/sun spot that I have had under my eye (10 years) is actually lifting and peeling off..... So, this week... if I can make it to "Squeeze" my juice bar everyday I will be having a daily shot- $1 a day for better skin- not bad. Also the energy.....woohoo! So, I would try wheat grass before any supplements.....I bet you will be thrilled ;-)
Good Luck Alba....you are such a beautiful girl!!!!!!

Hi Sungoddess,
My skin is kind of like yours.
After I became raw, the cysts on my cheeks also never came back. All my inflamed pimples are on my chin (usu. 1-3) and temple (1). It has improved a lot, for the sizes of the inflamed pimples are getting smaller each month. However, I still have tons of whiteheads on my forehead.
I was told that forehead acne is liver related.
the mainproblem for me is also forehead and chin:(
