Cranberries May Be the Best Antibiotic

The lowly cranberry, known mostly as something you dump out of a can in a gelatinous mass and eat with turkey at Thanksgiving, may be on the way to helping sufferers of Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) get well while it saves them money on medical bills.

According to new research out of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, it may in fact provide a real alternative to antibiotics, especially for combating E. coli bacteria and other bacteria that have become antibiotic-resistant, providing a natural cure for many illnesses ranging from UTI to kidney infection to tooth decay.

Past studies have reported on health benefits of cranberry juice, including the ability to forestall UTIs, which affect 8 million people every year. But prior to the new study, scientists didn't understand how cranberry juice helps with UTI and other infections.

They suspected, however, that it works by keeping bacteria from sticking to the lining of the urinary tract.

It turns out that a group of tannins found primarily in cranberries does, in fact, keep bacteria from adhering to cells in the body, often forestalling even the beginning of infection. The tannins, at the molecular level, not only make it hard for bacteria to make contact with cells in the first place, but — if they do get close — make it difficult to grab hold.

Previously published work by the same team showed that cranberry juice actually causes tiny tendrils on the type of E. coli responsible for the most serious types of UTIs to become compressed, keeping the E. coli from binding tightly and staying put long enough to bring on infection.

What kind of cranberry products work best?

The effect on bacteria was the strongest when the cranberry juice was the most concentrated, implying that whole cranberry products and undiluted juice may be the most beneficial. I SAY USE RAW Joz

Since this problem came up with spinach and e-coli, it would be wonderful if cranberry would take the place of antibiotics. I wonder though...I have used cranberry juice many times through the years for UTI's. Every time I had to finally give in and get an antibiotic to cut it out completely. I was disappointed because I would have loved to see the problem solved naturally even if it did take longer than with an antibiotic.

Tirza: every one recommends the cranberry juice for UTI. But think about it. The cranberries are processed, have to had some 'cooking' process. Poured in bottles. Stored in warehouses and stores. HOW FRESH IS THIS? That's why the 'cure' process takes so long. So drinking fresh cranberries just blend 1/2 pineapple and 1 bag of cranberries. In the beginning you might add a touch of agave. I did not need it. Good Bye UTI' s for all? Sounds Great.

wyjoz,
You are absolutely right! I have just used the bottled juice in the past. Next time I want to use cranberry for an antibiotic effect, I will definitely use fresh! Thanks for the reminder! (duh, I should have thought of that!)

I wonder if dried cranberries would be just as good if not better-because they are more concentrated? Just eating them, not making them into a drink. I have noticed though that the dried ones from the health food store are pretty red and soft, so I am assuming there must be some preservatives going on there. I guess this would be a good project for our dehydrators! Just buy a package now and then of fresh ones and dry them for future use.

It should be noted that cranberries are metabollically acidic. That means you should probably limit the amount you eat. They're one of the only fruits that makes you acidic rather than alkaline.
