We are having trouble with raw.

Yesterday we ate chicken fajitas. Reason one of my customers ordered me a 50.00 dinner without telling me and I could not turn it down with causing major problems. I should have thrown it away when they left however, we all know what happened

We're back Raw today. But, having problems

We eat the same meals everyweek have since about June. Pizza, enchiladas, mushroom soup, stuffed portabellos, pasta. I am sick of seeing the same thing all the time. It seems like everytime I try something new DH doesn't like it.

I made extra bacon cause he indicated he wanted some it spoiled never touched it.

I give up I do not know what to fix that he will enjoy and I am sick and tired of the same things for lunch and dinner day in and out.

I have made raw chili from the raw family recipes full of sprouted beans and horrible. Through out (good news I definitely did sprouting part right I now have black, garbanza and soy beans in my compost area that I am transplanting to the garden  )

Alissa's pizza wrap he won't touch

Date nut torte he ate once said he liked it now won't touch. Same with blueberry pie, Raviolies, and the stuffed mushrooms you dehydrate from Alissa's book.

Hates onion dip, spinach dip. Ugh Ugh

Maybe you should just get back to the basics with him until his palate changes. Smoothies, fruit salads, guacamole and salsa with veggies to dip (cucumbers and bell peppers are good for this), banana ice cream, trail mix. It doesn't have to be like a traditional "dinner" type of meal. Think what you would eat if you were running around in the wild, nothing overly complicated.

Good luck, at least he is trying! Also, try Woody Harrelson's site www.voiceyourself.com

exurb's rule # 1 - don't make ANYTHING with sprouted garbanzos! ;) :D

Ok, that aside, I would say maybe see what other raw books your library has or get a couple others. Some that I like are Raw Food Real World, Living Cuisine by Renee Loux Underkoffler, Raw by Charlie Trotter and Roxanne Klein, and Rawesome by Brigitte Mars. I would say with the first few, it is hard to find a recipe that is a "dog."

Have you checked out maraw's recipes at therawtable.com - everyone I've tried there is a winner.

It is a frustration of mine with some raw books that there are some recipes that can be pretty bad. I'd rather have a book with 20 recipes and have them all be great, than a book with hundreds, then make all this disgusting tasting food that I can't stand to eat and have to throw out.

Also advice, take care of yourself. If the hubby wants to make the transformation, he will, if he doesn't he won't. A person can drive themselves crazy trying to please someone who is attached to specific sad foods... My hubby isn't totally raw, but he will eat raw with me on many occasions.

Also give yourself time to learn to experiment and create your own raw cuisine. At first when I started uncooking, I had to stick to recipes because everything I tried to invent was awful. Now I can play around and make different and new things all the time, and even delicious things too. ;)

Thats a lot of pressure for you, kinda burns off your enthusiasm, without that it's no wonder your lost for ideas.

Maybe talk about the reasons why your doing it, and get him to help in some way on weekends, or free time. You can have a lot of fun together cooking, talking, experimenting. He'll get a better idea about preparation, time, etc..

I am definitely learning this one well.

I of course have Alissa's book, Top Raw Men, Three of the Raw Family Books, and RAW. I have to say that Top Raw Men has so for enabled me to remove lots of things from my diet. So far only one recipe we like that is Zucchini Salad.

No but I will.

Hubby has no problem staying raw. He would live on smoothies, pizza and guac. all the time if I did not complain. That is why there are enchiladas, bacon and pasta in our diet.

Well, it is a good idea except if you look at what were eating we're already at the basics. I go through so many bells, tomatoes, avocados, and such that two local stores have limited my quantities when stuff is on sale :p

You might have to fix two separate meals. That's what I do most of the time. My husband is not raw but he does like some of the raw things that I make and eats them. He doesn't care if they are raw or not. Mainly he just insists on his own meal. He has always been that way. I think it's his way of getting attention or something. No biggie.

Personally, I don't do a lot of raw recipes. Seems like a lot of work and I'm just as happy with a salad or some mounds of cut up veggies. I do like chickpea sprouts but as is. I just eat them like popcorn. I haven't found any recipes that I liked with sprouts in them.

So in the first post you blame a "difficult hubby" as the problem, but in your next post I think you are saying that it is YOU who is getting bored. Am I correct?

I echo what the others say about trying some new recipes. I also think you need to sit yourself down and review why you are Raw and what you hope to gain from it. Sounds like you need some re-motivation.

I remember trying really complicated recipes at first and having tons of aggravating failures. It takes awhile to learn to "cook" this way and to be able to know what sorts of ingredients you are going to like or not. Personally I have not had much luck with sprouting anything, so I don't. I still have flax crackers and corn tortillas for crunchy snacks. If you read through my journal, you will see that I eat some pretty delicious Raw food now!

It also seems like you have some pretty heavy junk food addictions. I found the Garden Diet ebooks helpful in their treatment of junk food cravings. Please take some time to remember that although junk food may taste good while you are eating it, it has only made you overweight and unhappy in the long run. It is just not worth it in my opinion.

Hang in there!

The solution seems simple to me, in fact I can see more than one solution:

1) Hubby makes his own food and eats what he likes then he can't complain
to you if he doesn't like it
2) Hubby tells you what he likes and you prepare it for him (However, if
you both work full-time you should be sharing the food preparation and
other domestic chores!!)
3) Hubby needs to decide if he really wants to be a raw food eater as
there is SOOOO much choice out there that I really find it hard to
believe he is so fussy!

With regard to always eating the same things every week, don't SAD eaters do just that as well? Meat, potatoes and over-cooked vegetables are pretty repetitive foods day in, day out.

With all the raw recipe books available, I think your husband will have his eyes opened to how much variety there is out there.

Good Luck!

Tracy

I would say try foods with less ingredients and/or whole foods.

Exurb - whats is the problem with sprouted chick peas in your opinion?

English Tracy,

You have got a very good point about SAD diets being the same over and over. I seem to recall now that you bring it up we had 5 meals we rotated and every few months I get frustrated as hell over it.

Difference then was we knew what other things were that he could or would eat.

No I do not have a junk food addiction. I have had a condition all my life that causes me to throw up about 70% of everything I eat that is cooked in anyway or eaten with cooked food. Even though I get sick I still managed to put on a lot of extra weight. Especially since almost all excercise has gone out the window as the years go by and the condition gets worse. It doesn't matter what it is, how it is cooked, I eat and get violently ill. There is no cure, my throat and stomach or tore up from this along with probably a lot more of my body that I don't even realize.

I do not deny that I am bored, I indicated I am having trouble finding new recipes that my dh will enjoy.

I was hoping to get some ideas of new things that went over really well that I could incorporate into our diet.

I have even gone so far as to make a list of the main fruits, veggies and nuts that he eats to come up with some new recipes. It is just very frustrating and I thought if I posted I would get some help.

Hi Lay-Lay good to see you online

Alissa's pizza wrap, date nut torte, blueberry pie, raviolies, stuffed mushrooms, onion dip, spinach dip...

Wow, Gelis, I would love all that... :)
When can you hubby move out? What's his period of notice? ;)

Put the ball in HIS court....
Let him create a week of recipes that he likes... tell him you will prepare them
all he has to do is write down what he wants.

- It may work?~

Gelis,
No offense meant! I WAS only trying to help. Guess I was speaking to this statement of yours:

"Hubby has no problem staying raw. He would live on smoothies, pizza and guac. all the time if I did not complain. That is why there are enchiladas, bacon and pasta in our diet."

That and the chicken fajitas that you said you guys overate.

I have read about your unfortunate condition in previous posts. Are you feeling better on Raw? Has the vomiting stopped?

Anyway, here is a list of my favorite raw meals. I hope you will see something you like.

Breakfasts (but there is no reason to limit them to breakfast time):
Green Lemonade from Raw Food Detox Diet
Green Smmothies
Fruit Smoothies
Oat Groats
Chopped Apples with nuts, agave, cinnamon and raisins
Nut Mylkshakes with cacao or cinnamon
Grawnola from Raw Food Real World
Fresh-squeezed Orange Juice

Lunch/Dinner:
Salad with tahini dressing from The Garden Diet
Tahini Cheese also from Garden Diet
Alissa's Salmon Pate
Marinated Veggies warmed in the dehydrator
Coleslaws of all kinds
Nut cheese from Raw Food Real World
Healthisraw's meatloaf with raw ketchup from these threads
Potato chips from these threads
The chili with pineapple BBQ sauce from Raw Food for Busy People

Desserts:
Cheesecake from these threads
Almond Butter Cookies from RFRW
RP's brownies

I could go on and on! There was also a thread recently about people's favorite meals. Hope you see something that will spark some ideas.

in alissas book::

the apple pie
banana ice cream
chocolate (fudge?) turtles
pesto mushrooms
banana mango pudding
chocolate pudding/chocolate mousse

my very un-raw boyfriend or teenage brothers loved all of those

what about visiting a raw food restaurant? i didnt look to see where you are, but maybe that would help?

maybe try finding a recipe online for deep-dish pizza? i went to karyns in chicago and had their deep-dish pizza and my gosh it was the best thing ive ever had (hey..even RAW chicago pizzas incredible... :p )

sticking with raw is really really worth it in the long run. but its usually difficult to get into.

took me a year

Pesto mushrooms we tried when first started gave him a tummy ache. He said he though ti was the oil.

Raw Restraurants none in our area or surrounding states that I can find. We do have a raw chef I have a call in to him to see how much he would charge to make a meal for 2. I fear it will be outrageous but, it never hurts to ask.

I will look for deep dish pizza recipe.

You may have to start introducing some lighter meals, salads and soups perhaps, maybe some fruit meals.

That way you get used to eating lighter and healthier. Sounds like you might feel the need to have big heavy meals all the time.

Would he be against cutting up a bunch of fruit for dinner one night? Just eat all you want, leave the fruit out and graze on it a little later if you don't get enough.

Try doing that 2-3 times a week, take a break from all the heavy recipes. That is what we do.

I am grumpy been up since yesterday morning. I appologize if it came across that way. I am wide awake cannot sleep. Ugh Oh well have been very productive.

As to my condition. the vomiting has stopped. I got a bad stomach ache after the fajitas but that was it. I did have will power I gave half the food away when she left.

She is my biggest client and I have a terrible time telling them no about anything. Without them my business would be so much less. I know get a back bone. :(

He loves smoothies our breakfasts are.
Green smoothies
fruit smoothies
fresh squeezed oj and wheat grass shot.

I have to say I tried almond milk on him the other day and I remember he was looking for the peppermint patties I made him last week. So I think I will start a list of what he seems to like. Maybe if I just start putting those things in the fridge he will expand.

Tried the salmon pate not going there with his opion. Potato chips I make them but, for some reason he likes them but will not seek them out have to place in front eats one or two only.

Coleslaw now I am not a coleslaw eater but, he is so I have to ask is coleslaw raw or do I need a special recipe????

Emily Thanks again

Also there is nothing wrong with ordering what YOU want - who cares that they are your client. If you are getting sick, that is a perfect reason to eat raw food. How bad would they feel if they knew that they spent $50 on you, that made you sick?

Raw foodists seem to gradually drift towards non-recipe eating, maybe this is a sign that you are going in that direction.

I actually love mono eating fruit like melons, kiwi, dried fruit and frozen pineapple, bananas and berries. That with the occasional salad and almond butter is my latest kick.

I noticed that I was eating lots of tropical fruit so I call it the Tropical Isle Paradise Diet. :p Maybe I should tell people that's what I'm on instead of saying I'm on raw food.
