I haven't used A.'s recipe yet, but the best thing about the recipe I have used is that you grate half the apples & slice the other half & mix it all up. Something about that combination does great things for the texture.

I am planning on making an apple pie in the next couple of days. Should I follow the recipe exactly or are there any suggested tips? One thing I was thinking was to make applesauce with some of the apples and slicing the others....

i made this yesterday evening ready to take with me today. it is so yummy. As regards variations, maybe you could add walnuts, or sprinkle some raw carob on the top :)
the apple sauce sounds lovely, let us know how it goes.
best wishes

does it matter if you use golden raisins instead of regular dark raisins?
Do you think it would make it taste different?

I made the apple pie exactly in the book with the sunflower seed crust and then tried making it with the crust from her blueberry pie (the one using almonds). Personally, i love the almond crust sooooo much more with the apple inside!!

thanks for the tip, that's a recipe I haven't tried yet. Since everyone's doing a different nut, maybe I'll do pecan.

I just made it with the walnut crust and it is delicious! My wife thinks we should make it for Thanksgiving. One confusing point...the recipe lists 7.5 apples and the directions only refer to 6.5 apples. I took the extra apple, chopped it fine, and put it on top. Any other thoughts?

I plan on making this tomorrow but think I'll use an almond or walnut crust instead of the sunflower one in the recipe. Any suggestions on an alternative crust recipe from Alissa's book?
This will be so good, so very much like fall! I have lovely (and yummy) Gala apples, can't wait to try this!
Edit-I just saw the suggestion to use the almond crust recipe from her Blueberry Pie so I'll try that!

i just wanted to remind everyone that im addicted to alissas apple pie.
i made some more tonight..it is sooo yummy.
id post a pic, but my roommate made alissas raw pumpkin pie and put it in the pie dish, so i put my apple pie in a mixing bowl. upside down.
so its more like an upside-down cobbler.
but pssh its STILL so good..

wow..after reading all these posts about this apple pie, I had to make one this morning..Yummm!!! I made the almond crust and because I have a small pie plate I had enough of the crust mixture to sprinkle over the top. This is so good. I hope I have enough left tonight for my husband to try.

I haven't looked at the recipe. I'm afraid to post the recipe from the book because I might infringe on a copyright law. I would guess you would use apple chopped, dates soaked and ground....with walnuts chopped and then traditional spices like cinnamon? Maybe some raisins? Oh yeah...make a crust with some chopped nuts and dates....that's the best I can do for ya. Hope that helps....at least this way you have an idea...and you can taste it along the way...that's the good thing about eating raw, it's all safe to taste as you go! Good luck.
