Are apples the only crunchy fruit? I mean like a firm/hard fruit that gets that "crunch" sound when you bite into it?? I know other fruits can be firm when unripe, or firm on the outside and soft/mushy inside like melons. But I just couldn't think of any other fruit that was crunchy like an apple, inside and out.

Maybe they are nutritionally unique in a way, too. You always hear that saying "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" but I always just took that as "a healthy eating lifestyle keeps the doctor away." But maybe apples really are unique though. I know that whenever I feel bad in anyway....detox, flu, cold, depressed, fatigue.....no matter what it is, eating an apple always makes me feel better.

Can you think of any other firm, crunchy fruits that I am forgetting??

hmm, interesting thing to ponder! I'm sitting here thinking and thinking...I can't think of any other fruits that have that double crunchiness! Umm, maybe really hard pears? Oh, Asian pears are supposed to be like that. A cross of an apple and a pear my dad said. Can't think of anything else though.

Asian pears are crunchy, yes, but actually, they are not (as is commonly thought) a cross between an apple and a pear. Asian pears are just a species of pear that was cultivated thousands of years ago in China and brought to the U.S. during the gold rush/chinese railroad worker period. We just call them 'apple pears' and the like because the remind us of both apples and pears. Just a little useless trivia for you guys! :D

That's what I was going to say. Asian pears. I can't think of any others off the top of my head.

Apples are very high in pectin. That's one heath benefit of them. They also have something in them that cleans the teeth but I can't remember exactly what that is.

As for crunchy stuff, I'd consider cranberries to be crunchy. Coconut and nuts are technically fruits and they're crunchy. There might be other things but I'm not a big fruit eater.

NECTARINES! I love them you can get the regular ones, or white nectarines. They are soo yummy and very crunchy. I love them way better then apples.

yeah the pears on my trees are even more crunchy then apples. Nectarines and peaches when not real ripe are crunchy too.

Pears are an odd fruit. I've read that they are one of the few fruits that are edible and also taste good even in their unripe state. They also should not be left on the tree to ripen. They should be picked then allowed to ripen at room temp. for 2-3 days up to about a week depending on how ripe you want them. Last year, a neighbor girl expressed interest in our pears so I picked a big bag, sending them home with her dad and telling him that they needed to ripen off the tree. Apparently he didn't listen when I said this. A few days later the girl came back to report that they'd had to throw out the pears I gave them because they weren't ripe. She just thought I wanted to know this.

I well remember an incident in 3rd grade where my mom had sent a very ripe Bartlett pear in my lunch. It was very yummy and juicy. I had cleaned the sticky juice off of my hands but forgot to clean my desk. We did math. When it came time to turn in my math paper, the edges of it came off in my hand but the center of it was welded to my desk with pear juice. The teacher had to come over to my desk to correct my paper. And then we had to scrape it all off so we could clean it.

I've never had a crunchy nectarine, unless it was unripe - and my BF has practically lived off them all summer. Ours are always soft and juicy.

OP - the 'apple a day thing' is referring to a healthy lifestyle (along the same lines as when people talk about red wine/dark chocolate/green tea/whole grains being healthy - the fact is, the people eating those things are likely to have healthier diets overall anyway). I've never really cared for apples. Now and again I find them OK, but only Granny Smiths that have been quatered and put in a bowl for me to eat :D
