Never heard of any risks. It has alot of B vitamin (but not all of them) and is a complete protein and scientists have never been able to decide if it is a plant or an animal. I believe everything in moderation but maybe try some other foods that have components of yeast in them (like the B's or protein) and see if you crave those also - like an experiment to see what it is in the yeast exactly that you are craving.

Can only think that if you're allergic to yeast and or have candiasis (spelling?) that it would have a negative affect. Is it completley raw?

I e-mailed Jinjee and she says no, it is NOT raw.

I've looked up the processes and it is a cooked product.

It's not raw but is considered live. It's a bi-product of making molasses. If your friend has concerns about it you should ask him/her what those concerns are. I have heard none. The makers of it say it does not cause/affect candida.

Yup, that's why people tend to crave it and "eat a lot" of it.

Raised On Molasses
Nutritional yeast is grown on mineral enriched molasses and used as a food supplement. At the end of the growth period, the culture is pasteurized to kill the yeast. You never want to use a live yeast (i.e. baking yeast) as a food supplement because the live yeast continues to grow in the intestine and actually uses up the vitamin B in the body instead of replenishing the supply. (Brewer's yeast is nutritionally the same but as a by-product of the beer-brewing industry it has a characteristic bitter hops flavor.)

This comes up quite a bit.
Sptgyl, your question was about the health risks of nutritional yeast. Here (http://www.vegsource.com/jo/qa/qanyeast.htm) is your answer.

OMG! Are you having severe bloating? I don't know if I should LOL here or not! This stuff was still alive in the pyramids after thousands of years! Does anyone know what that will do to sptygl?
I feed nutritional yeast to my cats all the time.

well, i had to go out and buy a YOGURT FOR 5 BUCKS TO COUNTERACT THE PROBLEM OF EATING (NON-NUTRIONAL) YEAST........
i was actually using bakers, dry active yeast for LIKE EVERYTHING!!! i loved the taste, the cheesy taste it gave things........
UNTIL I found out --
the active dry yeast is not at all good.......... and i did not know the difference!!!
it's nutritional yeast or brewers yeast which is very good for you, only found at places like whole foods
wow------- so i go to 3 stores to find it, and then to whole foods...
the guy said i have to as a precaution take acydophillis -- each little mini (basically yogurt) cost 5 bucks!
so, lesson learned...........

Warning sptygl, Brewer's Yeast is a by-product of the beer industry, and it tastes really bad (to most people). It has a dark brown color and strong smell.
Nutritional yeast is the pleasant, cheesy tasting stuff. It has a golden yellow color and smells nice. We usually use the Kal brand, but Red Star makes a good one too.

I know that $5 acidopholus stuff. I bought it when I first started raw for the probiotics. I wasted the last of it after I read about milk on this site. I have always loved buttermilk. Wish there was something raw that tasted like it. Hope all goes well with your recovery from yeast! Hope you don't get a yeast infection! I'm laughing but I don't know....could it happen?
