We all need them sometimes. What are the yummy things that help you stay raw?
My all time fav is my frozen banana, coconut milk and almond butter smoothie. You take a young coconut (the white, kind of triangle top ones--get them at asian markets cheap) and open it, pour the water into the blender and scrape the meat into the blender, put in some frozen banana chunks (how many depends on hungry you are) and a heaping tablespoon of really raw almond butter (buy it online or make your own--Marantha brand at the health food store is not raw--it might be ok for people without health issues, but for those of healing from an illness --we need really raw) and then blend. The frozen bananas are hard on the blender, be patient, it will be slow going and you have to stop a few times and push the bananas around and push them down into the blades a little. I have a Hamilton Beach blender and it does it does just fine but I have burned out a couple of cheaper models doing this. Add some nutmeg and vanilla if you want it to be a really, really yummy almost eggnog kind of thing! It is so delicious!!!!
Chocolate mousse--delicious
Blend up a couple of really ripe bananas, a couple of really ripe avocados, a cup of soaked dates, a cup of raw carob powder and a little bit of water if it comes out too thick. super fast, easy and yummy!!!!!!
Banana, orange juice and frozen blueberry smoothie:
the juice of one orange (i just cut an orange down the middle and squeeze both sides with my hands) a few really ripe bananas and a lot (a cup or more) of frozen blueberries (easy to get--always at any store I go to)--blend it up and enjoy!!!! something about the blueberries and bananas makes this the sweetest and most satisfying of all the fruit only smoothies I've tried. Other berries make it a little more tart.
Mango/Banana pudding
Blend up some peeled mango and really ripe bananas---eat in a bowl with a spoon. Creamy and delicious!!!!
Mango Ice Cream
If you can find frozen mango chunks in the freezer section. It;s hard to do with mangos you freeze yourself because they always seem to freeze in huge chunks that are impossible to blend. OK, take your bag of frozen mango chunks and throw it in the blender along with the juice of one orange (put the juice in the blender first) and blend until it is a sorbet like consistancy. YUmmy!!!!!
Guacamole--my fav
Some ripe avos, lots of cilantro, a tomato, some purple onion, a clove of garlic, some salt and pepper, a dash of cayenne, juice of half a lemon--throw it all in the food processor and process for a sec!! super easy and delicious. wrap it in romaine leaves, dip flax crackers or cut up bell peppers (i only like the yellow or orange ones) in it or spoon it on portabello mushrooms that have been marinated in some olive oil and namu shoyu. yummy!!!
Ok, I'm at school now and am totally hungry from writing all this! :-) I'll post more later if I think of some other really yummy things that I think other people will like.

My absolute long term, never get tired of it favorite is almond butter on a banana. This always hits the spot when absolutely nothing else sounds good. I think it's a combo my body really likes. :)

I have two favorites that I make all the time:
#1 All time favorite is Pecan's and Dates. The best!
#2 is:
-Two ground tablespoons of cacao
-1/4 cup almonds
-1/4 cup pecans
-2 tablespoons of agave or 3 soaked and pitted dates
-1 teaspoon of coconut oil
-smidge of vanilla bean
The measurements are aproximations and you can substitute anything. I usually put it in the freezer to make some fudge but most of the time I have trouble getting it there.

Butter pecan ice cream...A couple of frozen bananas, a generous dollop of raw honey, vanilla extract, a big pinch of salt. Toss it all in the food processor and process until smooth (add a tiny bit of warm water to help blend if needed.) Then add the pecans and pulse chop them, not finely ground if you like chunks in your ice cream like I do. That's it. It's divine.
Now why am I torturing myself on this thread when I'm wrapping up day one of the Master Cleanser?! A raw food masochist :o

Frozen bananas & flax ground with water in my blender. I could survive on this concoction. It was my dinner and breakfast for many a day in the first raw year of my RAW life... :)
I also adore Florida avocodos...the sweet ones. Plain is fine. As a pudding even better.
Dried figs. It is the little seeds I enjoy. They are a PMS favorite.

Melissa!
I kid you not - I was just THINKING about trying to make butter-pecan icecream after the fast and here you are mentioning it! That sounds so very good. Now tell me this, does it have that kinda "buttery" taste that butter pecan is known for? If it does, I'm gonna end up hurtin' myself! LOL
But my all-time favorite comfort food (raw) is also bananas and almond butter!

Hi Rawkin,
Yeah, it's pretty buttery ;) But don't hurt yourself, LOL! The secret is the salt, believe it or not. And even though it's not "kosher" to say so, I think it turns out better with a pinch of kosher salt than sea salt. The honey has a caramelly quality...Yum...WHY AM I DOING THIS? Lemonade, lemonade, love that MC lemonade, yum yum yum, HA!

I tried Melissa's pecan banana recipe and another one posted here with carob, pecans, walnuts, YUM!! I tried Alissa's walnut fudge recipe tonight. I gave a rubber spatula of it to my hubby to try (he never eats dessert) and he ate the whole thing! Then, I was trying to get the rest of it from the bottom of my Vitamix and was thinking, I'll save the last man, er fudge, no matter what! It is very good. I think the next time I will use the Vitamix container that makes dough though because it makes food come up from under the blades and not hide under them.

cassy... when you mentioned the dried figs being a pms food... my mom has the same cravings!.. she eats dried figs by the packages when shes pmsing... i wonder if theres something your body is needing from the figs at that time! interesting :P
honestly, i have no comfort foods at all. with the raw diet, i just eat whatever i like.. whenever i want it! :p but i really never get at certain cravings for anything thats similar to sad comfort foods.. like ice cream or chocolate or anything.. i know im weird.. but most think im blessed lol!!
the frozen banana with flax sounds so yummy! ive had the mix together before but never with the banana frozen!... mmm... sounds like a yummy " ice cream "
one of my favorites tho is frozen banana with a small chunk mature coconut and frozen blueberries.. no water, no ice.. just that in the blender.. it comes out soo rich and creamy .. and mmm.... i could eat it forever :)
You all are makin' me hungry!! Now I have to go get something to eat!! :p

I haven't made too much, and only one "dessert" type thing so right now that is going to have to be the date nut torte. I was totally blown away when I tried it, totally rich and for some reason I expected it to really taste like raisins but it doesn't. I've never actually been really fond of raisins on their own but I'd eat 'em like this everyday :D
potatoes! cauliflower potatoes, that is. i put of head of cauliflower into the food processor add a touch of olive oil, minced garlic, jalepeno, and celtic sea salt. i am still looking for a delicious gravy to go with it though. for now, it's a miso based gravy.

Take a really fresh, moist large medjool date. Slit the top and remove pit. Stuff with a walnut half.
3 of these will satisfy any kind of craving.

Ella, I have a recipe for mushroom gravy if you'd like it. I've never tried it because it asks for shitake mushrooms but then lists shitake as a seperate ingredient and I don't get that..but.. here it is:
Mushroom Gravy
By RoseLee Calabro
1/2 C almonds, soaked 12-48 hours and blanched
1/2 C water
2 C shitake mushrooms
water for consistency
1/2 C shitake, finely chopped
1/4 t garlic granules or 1 clove garlic
2 tsp. Bragg Liquid Aminos
Blend almonds and water until smooth, set aside. Blend mushrooms add water for consistecny. Add almond milk, chopped
shitake, seasonings and mix well.
I also found this one on the rawsacramento website I heard about from Heather,
Soup/Gravy/Sauce
This rich and thick soup has a heavenly mushroom flavor. A great
special recipe for the holidays. As soup, because it is so rich 1/2
cup is a large enough serving. For warm soup or gravy, heat over
low heat, or a double boiler until warm (not hot) to the touch. Use
the tastiest mushrooms you can find, crimini work very well and
shitake's have proven health benefits.
The trick is to use a very small serving bowl or cup for this soup.
If a large meal follows, the amount of fat in this soup (2
tablespoons per serving) will not contribute to comfort or good
health. If you'd like a zingier soup, add 1 teaspoon chopped onion.
1/4 cup almond butter
1 1/2 cups cut up mushrooms (cut in quarters)-or more, to taste
1 tablespoon Bragg's or a large pinch of sea salt or 1 1/2
teaspoons of Nama Shoyu
1/2 cup water
4 tablespoons finely chopped mushrooms
Place first 4 ingredients in blender. Blend until smooth. Pour into
a serving bowl. Top with chopped mushrooms. Yield 1 Cup, which is 2
servings. Make and eat the same day.

nummyyy....I could live on almond butter and bananas...love it too.
I also love pouring leftover strawberry/banana smoothie into popsicle molds.
I have always been a huge chocoholic. What really does it for me now is this.
Halvah
1 cup raw organic tahini
1 Tbsp carob
3 Tbsp honey
couple drops of vanilla if you like.
Mix it all together and chill. Oh so good. I love it spread on top of"
Seed/Fruit Bars
1 cup sesame seeds ( i have also used sunflower!)
1/2 cup walnuts ( or any nut)
1 apple
1 banana
1/4 cup raisins
Mix all together in a food processor. Spread in a glass baking dish and freeze for an hour or two to give it form. Cut into squares ( can eat like this but I dont) Then I dehydrate the squares for maybe 8 hours.
Spread halvah on top like icing and its divine..like eating fancy Christmas squares/baking. Put a pecan on top of each bar as a garnish.

I'm sending dh out to buy a cauliflower. With my candida that I'm dealing with, I'm not supposed to be even having fruit. So the almond butter on bananas is out, walnut-filled date is out, all the yummy treats are out.

I am from Belgium and THE Belgian food is French Fries made in a special way.
I loved to make those for myself and family as comfort food. Was one of the things I was missing by moving to the US.
Well, I am making now the Fries for the family and for myself I make the life fries .
Cut one hikema (spelling?) in fries piece. Put in a bowl and mix a little olive oil, onion powder, salt, paprika in it.
They look like real fries, but are much healthier and taste delicious.

thank you so much zoe. i will try this out. it does look like a mistake with the mushrooms. hmm. i usually don't follow recipes exactly, anyway. so, i will see how it turns out with just 2 cups of shitake. :)

Hi,Gotta say my all time favorite is the Raviolies, with marinara sauce.
Man that hits the spot.
I also love the turtles, just honey, carob and walnuts, they taste like semi sweet chocolate wrapped around walnuts. those are delicious.
I also love the pesto stuffed mushrooms, and the meatloaf with bar=b=que sauce, although I had alot of cayenne or jalepeno to my sauce, as I like it really hot.
the Pizza wrap with falafel lettuce, tomato, onion and tahini dressing, has kept me from wanting falafel cooked, and I also use it to wrap up a taco salad, the meat part is the meatloaf with mexican seasonings, and lettuce, tomato, and onion with cashew sour cream and hot salsa, that helps too.

All those wonderful recepies that everyone is sharing. Where can we find those? Are they on this message board? I would love to make all the things that are mentionned here, but have not seen the recepies yet. Can you let me know?
I don't really know what carob is originaly made of. I only know it is a subsitute for chocolate.

02-26-2005, 12:01 PM
Carob is an evergreen tree...the pod or fruit of that tree is ground to make carob powder.
"rich in sucrose (almost 40% plus other sugars) and protein (up to 8%). Moreover, the pod has vitamin A, B vitamins, and several important minerals. They can be eaten directly by livestock, but we know carob mostly because the pods are ground into a flour that is a cocoa substitute. Although this product has a slightly different taste than chocolate, it has only one-third the calories (total 1595 calories per pound), is virtually fat-free (chocolate is half fat), is rich in pectin, is nonallergenic, has abundant protein, and has no oxalic acid, which interferes with absorption of calcium. Consequently, carob flour is widely used in health foods for chocolate-like flavoring. A very fine polysaccharide gum--mucilaginous, odorless, tasteless, and colorless--can also be obtained from the pod and is now used in many products. There are also several putative medicinal uses of the plant, and singers formerly chewed the pod husks in the belief that this clears the throat and voice."

My favourite comfy food is
one frozen banana
1/2 cup frozen raspberries
3 or 4 dates
some pecans
all blended to a really soft icecream or thinned with almond milk to a smoothie
Having it right now, had a terrible day yesterday.

I love dried wild figs. They are small, bell-shaped and have a really crunchy coating that tastes like wafer, the seeds on the inside taste sweet as caramel.
Cacao, almond and date crust with wild berry & honey filling.
Besides sweet stuff, I love savory comfort foods too, such as:
Tahini, braggs, apple cider vinegar and honey made into a paste and spread onto celery and carrot sticks.
Home made spicy cashew spread in lettuce leaves.

This is off topic, but you may want to search for posts on candida on this board. I've read that it's the fat, not the fruit sugar that can affect it, but I guess it could be different for everyone.
On another note...I don't have a comfort SAD immitation food either.

SunChild,
Where do you find wild dried figs? I am guessing they must grow "wild" around where you live? I adore figs, in any way, shape, or form! These sound heavenly :)
Can't wait for fresh fig season, coming up very soon! Yeah!
On another note, I was able to recently find the most delicious, black mission organic dried figs at one of my local organic markets for only $4.25 a pound. That is an incredible price, as usually you can't even find the conventional ones at that price. So yummy :)

I suspect that's the case. This thread is a year old, and I no longer deal with candida symptoms unless I start eating raw treats made with dried fruits and nuts. So, still - a lot of the raw dessert recipes are out for me.
I guess my best raw comfort food is banana ice cream. Although I'm on a smoothie kick right now, and when I'm craving something, I tend to make a smoothie that's heavy on the bananas. I'm too lazy lately to deal with cleaning the food processer for banana ice cream, although that may change when the weather gets hot.
