All,

Are papaya seeds really edible and okay healthwise to eat if you grind them up and put 'em in foods (i.e. salad dressing, etc)?

I've been enjoying papaya this past week. This fruit is so delicious; to me, the taste has a hint of brown sugar. Has anyone else ever thought that papaya has a hint of brown sugar? (It's been quite some time since I've had brown sugar so maybe papaya has been substituted in that part of my brain :-)

I've read this link on papaya -->
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papaya

Plus I've googled Papaya Seed Dressing and there's lots of hits so it is quite common in the SAD world.

Has anyone experimented/used papaya seeds in a dressing?

For you 811rv'ers are papaya seeds considered okay on the 80-10-10 program?

Cheers,
Fiddler

http://www.all-creatures.org/recipes/salad-dr-papaya.htmlYes, thanks for the link reference -- I had seen this same link from another post on this forum. Seeing your link is what 'caused me to ponder the use of the papaya seeds. Since I'm following 811rv, I'm curious as to whether or not papaya seeds meet the 811rv standards? I'll post over on Graham's vegsource board -- maybe I'll get a response there.

Thanks for the post. I'll bookmark that site now for sure!

fiddler, I love papaya (the large ones, don't remember ever having one of the small kind.) Never noticed a brown sugar taste. They have a flavor all their own, don't think I could compare them with anything else. When we go to south FL that's what we eat for breakfast every time. All the fresh tomatoes we can hold for lunch. Dinner varies, possibly avocado and greens, greens, greens. Then we bring back watermelons. ahhhhh ... the good life.

There was a discussion about eating seeds on the rawschool yahoo group a few days ago. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Rawschool/message/9862

i had wondered if there was a way to PLANT the seeds, and in fact tried to sprout them several times, with no luck obviously!! LOL
i also tried the same with the avocado seed!!

i would never think there was this use, to use in a dressing!!
that's good to know, ............

Doe, thanks for the response. Yes, papayas do have a great flavor all their own. But for some reason, the last couple days it just reminded of brown sugar only better without the ill effects. I love papayas. The ones I've been eating are the larger ones too. Papayas ... get in my belly! :)

fiddler, i put a teaspoon of the seeds in my green smoothies -- go easy, they have a peppery bite!
sptygl, i just stuck a few in a pot of soil and they have sprouted -- hopefully, i'll eventually have a few fruit-bearing trees!
many blessings to all,

All,

I got a response from Dr. Graham on VegSource regarding this thread. I just had a feeling that the seeds might not be ideal to eat. Here's Dr. Graham's response -->

No, papaya seeds are not food fit for human consumption. It can be
done, but they are highly irritating to our system.

I noticed in Juliano's book he was using them for a raw version of caviar.

Then again, many of the recipes in there may not be considered "optimal' foods by others, so there ya go.

It all depends on your personal journey.

Papaya seeds are considered by some to incredibly healing... Personally they're a bit too peppery for me.

I wouldn't touch one that wasn't from an organic papaya though.

I dired the seeds from my last papaya, and put them in my pepper grinder and use it every day and have had no side effects. Though I found they don't have too much flavor :-/

They totally gross me out. That's exactly what they remind me of. I had to TOUCH a couple the other day and thought I'd gag! I don't like them!!! I get rid of them right away!!!
EEEWWWW!!!
