View Full Version : Weekly Fast?
Would it be unhealthy to have one day out of every week where i would have a 24 hour long water fast?
Lately, i have enjoyed fasting because of the self control i am learning from it.
i've never really heard of anyone doing this though, once a week.
What do you think?

I don't remember where I read it. It wasn't on this forum, I believe; but I read somewhere about someone who fasted every thursday.

* I can't come up with a single reason why it should not be healthy
* I think it is a great exercise to build up discipline for a longer fast (7 days),
which it can't replace.
* And it will also help you to keep raw , eating/drinking non-dense foods

There is absolutely nothing wrong with FASTING for one day of the week. In fact I would join you but my inner CHILD says no.........

Hi... I did one day fasts each week... for a couple of months last Spring. After a few weeks I was used to it... and enjoyed a day of rest from eating. I did both juice and water days... I also added some beautiful early morning walks on that day, meditation, creative projects to nuture my spirit, natural beauty treatments, a lingering aromatherapy bath at night, and early to bed.
I would wake up ready to start the week... feeling wonderful! I did this on Sundays and it became a relaxed, renewing day for me. Even if I had some things to do on Sundays... I kept it to as little as possible. I could let the other 6 days be busy... but Sundays became my day of rest, renewal and fasting.
Anyway, after an extended trip... I just never got back into this routine. Your post has inspired me to start this again... Thanks! :D

I did a one day a week juice fast for a few weeks. It was great. It really helped to balance my blood sugar and eating habits. It was a nice little "reset" button for my digestive tract. I moved away from it, but would like to get back into it eventually.

PAUL BRAGG, the great health pioneer in his book "THE MIRACLE OF FASTING" suggests that exact program with 7 to 10 days or more a couple of times a year.
I have done the 24 hour fast once a week for most of the last 24 years even when I was horribly unhealthy. I always felt better.
I see only benefits if done in conjuncture with a healthy raw food regime, breathing, sunshine, good water, positive thought and love.
be well Bill

One day fasting has a long history in Christianity, among other religions. I believe one is supposed to fast on the rest day, as well as refraining from work.

I read something in the last week that contradicted this idea and said that 24 hours fasting was not enough to bring about tha change in your body that fasting is designed for.
I am reading both Gabriel Cousens and Doug Graham at the moment so will have to check to see which one makes this claim.

I did that for a while, I wasn't really looking at the health benefits because it was more for spiritual purposes, but it deffinitely didn't do me any harm and I got used to it really quickly... That was water fasting, but I have also done jucie fasting, which is even easier and very healthful... especially on raw I think it would be great, cuz the worst thing was feeling wierd after a heavy breakfast the next morn... though getting lightheaded and slow in the evening of the fast isn't awesome, I think it deffinitely has benefits.

I think that they mean that a 1 day fast has it's own merites, but can't replace the benefits of a longer fast, which is not it's aim. On their own
they have their value, and together they will be complete.

I have a book on fasting and in there it mentions fasting either one day a week, or for the weekend every week. One day a week sounds good to me. Seren xXx
Thank you all for these informative replys!
From what i'm hearing about this subject now, is that it would be a pretty good idea ~ which is exciting!
i'm most definately going to make a habit out of it.
Thanks again ~ all of you.

Generally speaking, fast only when the need of it spontaneously arises. What if you are really needing food on your fasting day?
However, if you undertake a real fast of substantial length (meaning more than a few days) for physical and spiritual renewal, that will be the quickest route to the promise land. Then just stay there with your new found sensitivities that can be built on from a much more evolved state.
Course, the day a week fasting has no harm really but you will not acheive the culminative benifits from all those individual 'fasting' days spaced out as such.

Can I ask you the opposite......are you learning self control when eating as well? I ask b/c my only concern is using fasting as a crutch.
Naturally on raw, you will experience days where your body does not want food.
:)

Hmm... i don't really understand your question. What i'm saying is that fasting weekly helps me practice self-control. And yes, i do practice self control when eating. But i find that a weird question, because a lot of people on raw indulge themselves in food quite often.

hee hee Mud, :p I know, I was reluctant to type that quesiton b/c it's kind of twisted but I think what I wonder is, do you have any fear of this "control" of lack of when eating raw?
Sometimes, yes. When i'm craving really cruddy foods, or feel like raw food is getting bland, fasting helps me appreciate raw more. (: Fasting helps me get a grip on things, and you get a feeling of self satisfaction from it.
That is a difficult question to word though ~ i know what you mean now.

I've been following this for over 2 years now. I fast one day a week and then, at the beginning of each month, I will do a 3 day detox. Haven't done one yet this month due to some certain circumstances so I am starting one tomorrow.
The Miracle of Fasting is the book that changed my life FOREVER.
Oh yeah...one more thing to add: Paul Bragg felt that sometimes shorter fasts worked much better than longer fasts. He was 95 and in excellent health when his life was shortened by an accident. I'd go with his word any day. And his daughter, Patricia - she still looks soooo good for her age! I basically follow her fasting program that she incorporated.

Fasting one day a week is great for your health. I prefer juice fasting over water fasting and I juice fast every Wednesday. I drink green juices and lemon water on my fasting day. I also drink herbal teas.

Brianna, which herbal teas do you find appropriate for fasting?

Star, sounds so beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
Sport, I cannot remember where I read this either, but I've heard fasting one day a week is very beneficial. Or even 3 consecutive days a month. I wouldn't worry about this though, in terms of following a protocol. Do you what you feel and let your body guide you.
Happy Fasting All!

Simply fast by drinking green juices or fruit juices or water or sprout soup or fast with consuming your fruit of choice all day. You choose and decide.
Break your fast the next morning with cucumber juice or fresh squeezed orange juice or grapes or anything you feel is the correct choice. Eat foods that are digestion friendly the next couple of days. Or continue juicing, eating salads, whole fruits etc. There's no one way to do it.
I would highly recommend doing thorough research on fasting in general before launching into a fast. Especially lengthy ones. A good book is Jeremy Safron's The Fasting Handbook: Dining from an Empty Bowl. Lots of great fasts and guidance in a compact, affordable reference guide.
Blessings.
