Yom Kippur is in a month and a bit. Those of you who celebrate it, how do you do it? What do you eat the day before? What do you break the fast with?

In my experience, the pre-fast meal should be small and bland. Trying to "load up" just ends up making you hungrier. Avoid anything spicy or salty that will make you thirsty. To break the fast, I usually just drink OJ. If I want something more before bed I will have a few bananas or a smoothie. Again, gentle and small.

Fighting the urge to binge on SAD post-fast is my biggest challenge, but with each fast I do a bit better. There are actually several dry fasts in the Jewish calendar year - the last one was Tisha B'Av in August.

I hope that helps,
emily

wow that's really good advice for the pre and post fast meals emily. i usually try to drink something like a smoothie that will hold me but won't fill me up.

can you name some of the other dry fasts in the jewish calendar year? i've always been fascinated with spiritual fasting.
