View Full Version : What are your "tried and true" stand-by meals?

I need some inspiration! I'm stuck in a food rut . . . I drink tons of smoothies and eat tons of fruit and salads, but I don't have many other meal ideas.
What are people's stand-by meals? The cheap, easy ones you always revert to?
I have Alissa's cookbook, but so many of her meals are either disproportionately high in fat or entail a lot of assembly or both. I'm looking for things I can make quickly.
I eat lots of sprouted grains, so grain recipes would be welcome, too.
Thank you so much!

I really enjoy the fajita wraps by Honeybee Joy. It takes about 30 minutes to make, because you put the veggies and marinade in the dehydrator to warm up while you do the rest.

I can't take a picture though cause they are so messy, don't know how in the world she managed to neatly keep them wrapped up like that!

This is a good thread! I don't know what banana peppers are but I also do not have time or patience for much preparation and need portable foods - and fat content just makes me sickly - I can't eat it. ....well everything julesmoz said.

I haven't made a lot of "recipes" yet because so far many of the ones I tried didn't taste good to me. One thing I do like is the onion bread topped with nut Swiss cheese, lettuce and tomato. I also like the nacho cheese. Sometimes I dehdrate it partially and packe it into vegetables like baby bell peppers or celery ribs. Or I leave it as is for a dip. Other times if I don't feel like fussing, I will just make little piles of something on a plate. Like lentil sprouts, tomato slices and strips of bell pepper. I tend to prefer my food rather plain.

you could make salsa and or guacamole and plop them in a lettuce/kale/collard leaf and wrap them up.
bananas "ice cream"
blend tomatoes, avocado, and other foods you feel will blend well to make a soup.
Hmm. depending on how many ingredients you use making "spaghetti" could be simple an quick.

2 very simple soups I make most often. They take less than 5 minutes to make and it lasts anywhere from 1-3 days.
Soaked rolled oats with walnuts. This is the simplest one. Sometimes add cinnamon & agave.
Avocado w/a dash of sea salt.
Pretty much all of the meals I prepare are simple. This is what has kept me raw for almost a year.

This is one of my favorite recipes, I could eat it every night if I had enough avocados!! If you want to lower the fat content, I take the mix and add one avocado, all chopped up and hand mix. Then I stuff it in a ripe juicy tomato (will make two stuffed tomatos). mmmmmmm, this is soooooo good!! I also usualy leave out the yeast and add blue-green algae. It gives it a nice green even color and Vitamine B as well!! I also use more nuts and a LOT more miso than they call for, whatever will get it moist enough to blend in my little Cuisenart miniprep food processor. Enjoy!!
Stuffed Avocado
by Kate Wood
* 2 oz sunflower and/or pumpkin seeds
* 1 carrot, chopped
* 2 tbsp dried tomatoes
* 1 tsp miso
* 1 tbsp nutritional yeast flakes
* an onion
* a red chilli
* half oz fresh basil leaves
* 1 oz alfalfa sprouts
* 2 small avocados
Put everything apart from the alfalfa and avocados in the food processor. Process for a couple of minutes until you have a thick puree. Next, slice the avocados in half and remove the stones. Then fill the holes where the stones were with the mixture, and cover the flesh with a thin layer. Top with alfalfa sprouts, to cover each half, and serve on a bed of lettuce.
Serves two as a main dish or four as a side dish.

I try to always have some onion bread in the dehydrator and cashew hummus in the fridge. This has become my favorite dinner. I also try to keep almond milk made up or at least almonds soaking for a quick almond milk so I can make almond milk, frozen banana, cinnamon smoothies. Those have been my staples for the last couple of weeks and have helped me stay raw for 13 days!!!!!! Woo-hoo. No turnin back now! :)

I'll tell you I love that onion bread but does anyone else smell it coming out the other end? :eek: :cool:

I used to eat the onion bread before I got into the 811rv. I no longer eat it. I even threw out what was left of my Nama Shoyu.
What I noticed is the following:
- My breath smelled bad and so did my sweat and bm.
- I tended to overeat on the onion bread. Often I ate a double batch in one sitting.
- I had a bad taste in my mouth for a while after eating it.
- My stomach would sometimes not feel well. Probably the onions irritating the stomach lining.
So, fwiw, I no longer eat the onion bread. Remember what Dr. D says. If it smells, looks and tastes like cooked food, it might as well be cooked food for how it makes your body feel. [ Paraphrasing ]

Here's some of my favorites:
- Just Banana Smoothie
Blend bananas with enough water to mix. Make sure bananas are very ripe.
- Romaine salad
Blend 2 or 3 tomatoes with 1/2 red pepper, 1 stalk of celery and 1/2 avocado
Drink half the dressing and pour the remaining half on a head of romaine lettuce (chopped with scissors). Imagine drinking a cup of dressing standalone. Only a raw dressing could be so delicious :)
- Orange-Banana-Mango smoothie
Juice 3 cups of OJ. Add to blender. Toss in enough frozen bananas and mangos to blend thick. Enjoy
- Papayas
Slice lengthwise. Scoop out the seeds and pulp. Spoon out your bites one delicious bite at a time
- With FALL fastly approaching, I look forward to some good oranges and apples
Eat 6 or 8 organic apples
Drink fresh squeezed orange juice. Add back in the pulp -- YUMMY!
- Green Smoothie
Blend some spinach and/or romaine lettuce in a blender. Add fruit of your choice
- Nut Milk shake
Not recommended to have too often but is a nice meal on rare occasions.
I don't even bother straining the nuts.
Blend a cup of soaked almonds (a cup after they've soaked) with 3 cups water. Add some frozen bananas.
Cheers,

I like my bananas ripe. It is hard to describe how ripe, but I'll try.
The peels should be brown speckled with no more green on the tips. When you peel them, the peels should come off fairly easily. You should get a few peel remnants left on the bananas that come off easily. The banana should be really soft almost to the point of mushy. If the banana is still firm and doesn't yield to slight pressure then it is not ripe enough for me.
Now, if you have those pesky flies attacking your bananas before you peel them chances are they are too ripe. :) If the peels are solid black, then they are too ripe. If you hold one end of the banana horizontally and the banana breaks in half, it "might" be too ripe but not necessarily
Let your taste buds and feel decide -- that's what I do. But how do you describe these things? Senses are hard to describe.
When I buy my bananas by the case, they're usually still green. I leave them in the case until they ripen ( I see some brown spots). I keep the case in a cool basement.
Hope this helps,
Fiddler

Here's one I like:
Wild Rice Salad
1 1/2 cups wild rice (soaked 3-5 days)
1 red bell pepper, finely chopped
1 cup corn
2 carrots, shredded
3 stalks celery, finely chopped
1/2 red onion, finely chopped
2 Tbl. parsley
2 tomatoes, diced
6-8 Tbl cold-pressed olive oil (depending on taste)
4-6 Tbl fresh squeezed lemon juice
1 tsp celtic sea salt
Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix well.
I gather the ingredients, shred the carrots in my food processor, quick chop everything else and can have this made in 15 minutes.
Note: Wild rice is purportedly not raw. This salad is delicious without it, too.
You could also try soaked seeds for a crunch to be completely raw.
My current favorite is:
very thin walnut/zucchini "bread" (dehydrated but still somewhat flexible - not rock hard) with cashew/macadamia "Cheese", chopped basil, chopped red onion and fresh tomatoes from the farmer's market that are devine right now!

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I had no idea the onion bread was so popular! I'll have to try some.
What things do people make with grains? I have a dehydrator, just so you know ;)

When I made the first two batches of onion bread I also had a tendency to stuff myself with it. But I have reduced my intake considerably - not on purpose though. I still really really like it and I often look at it in the fridge, but I rarely have more than one or two slices day.
I find that the more I dehydrate the less I eat - good that most things keep a really long time ;)
I just love uncooking and dehydrating, for me it's a great experience and I love the smell in the house when my Excalibur has been working for a couple of hours.

My second batch is in the dehydrator now......apart from the portion I ripped of and stuffed myself with, standing up, dropping crumbs on the floor. i alos had it for breakfast wrapped around shredded carrot, alfalfa sprouts, avocado and tomato. I'm finding it addictive!
