Something Im confused about. According to the chart in Alissa's book you should only combine fruits with green leafy's and celrey. Otherwise you should wait 2 hours to eat fruit. Also if you eat fruit you should wait an hour before having veggies (unless its green leafy's and celrey). So my question...at night how can I possibly eat dessert? I know I know this sounds so silly...BUT...I am a bit sweet eater. I usually eat dinner around 6:30. I love to eat dessert...its like a sweet cap to the day. So If Im done with dinner by seven I have to wait until 9pm to eat dessert unless I eat lettuce and celrey for dinner. I like salad but that sounds SO boring. I try not to eat after 7:30 pm so that leaves me without dessert. Am I missing something here or do I have this right?

Aren't you still fairly new to eating raw?

If so, please do not overly concern yourself with all the "rules" UNLESS you are experiencing problems with certain combinations, health challenges, etc.

Otherwise, as Alissa also says in the book...Just Eat Raw!!! Give your body the chance to adjust to this (new?) way of eating and then as your body gets cleaner and you are more intune to it, then you can start tweaking accordingly and focusing on limiting nuts, food combining, etc.

But if you try too hard to focus on all the rules too early on, then you may get frustrated and give up because it becomes "too much to think about". Just eat and enjoy your food because regardless, you're still eating healthier than you ever have. In time, things will balance out and you will naturally begin to eat more simply and get into proper food combining, etc.

I believe Alissa has the whole food combining section in her book for such that time...when you are ready for it, it'll be there for you as a guide.

Alissa (as well as many others) will tell that she eats what she wants, when she wants so if she decides to have "dessert" for breakfast, that's what she does! You can eat your sweets at another time of the day, doesn't have to be after dinner as you did when eating cooked foods. That's another thing we have to release from our minds is how we think in terms of set meals and what types of foods to eat for those meals. Dinner can be a salad, a preparead raw meal, fruit, a smoothie or even the dessert can be your dinner if you want it to! Have fun and as Revvell always says, "Play with your food!"

From what I understand, food combining is very useful for people who have digestive problems or digestive illnesses.

Otherwise I think it is just important to listen to the signals and messages that the body is giving. If one is healthy, energetic and happy, with no physical or emotional difficulties when eating, I think it is wiser not to become obsessed with food. One must eat to live, not live to eat.

Yes I am on day 13 of my raw lifestyle ;) Unfortunately I am one of the many who has an ED and although I am very used to eating healthy (with spurts of very bad binging) I am not used to eating this many calories. Even if it is veggies and fruits. I gained 3 lbs already and Ive actually given up nuts (short term) to get the gain under control. Seriously I used to eat 800-900 cals a day. Now Im likely eating close to double that. With my chrionic back condition I do not get to work out nearly as much as I want to. Im also a personal trainer (or should I say a full time mommy and retired PT) so I have issues with every pound I gain. Truly sad and Im hoping the raw way of life will also help me leave that negative thinking behind. My point being is that even though I am a newbie I feel like I need to be concerned with this stuff. BUT..I will take you word on it and try to go with the flow :)

I do have her book but was a bit confused on allowing myself dessert if it had fruit in it.

Anyway - thank you for your advice! :D

You do not have to have fruit for dessert. You could have chocolate brownies.

I am not so sure that dates count as fruit within the combining rules and I think that something heavy like brownies or fudge balls definetly does not count as fruit.

I also try not to eat anything except fruits after 7pm. I need to follow food combining rules because I have weak digestive system. When I follow it, my stomach feels so much better (less bloating). Unfortunately, chocolate brownies (dates + walnuts) do not follow food combining rules. Most desserts don't. So, I usually have my dinner at 6:30pm and wait until after 8:30pm to have a very sweet fruit as my dessert (i.e. durian). I still eat desserts that don't follow food combining rules, but I have them as a meal by itself (i.e. my dinner), and I try not to eat it too often.

Dates count as part of the sweet fruit category in food combining.
