mushrooms

I am not a mushroom person, I use them in some recipes. I just found some in the back of my refri must have been there a couple of weeks maybe three. Time gets away when you are havingfun. Anyway. they are still in there wrapper from the market. Anyone that knows their mushrooms please advise. How do you know when mushrooms go bad? Do they smell, are they slimy how? Also how long are they suppose to keep in the refri? thanks

I'm not the mushroom person either...but I've bought them for recipes before and at first they'll be light in color, practically have no smell.

Then, I've had them stay in the fridge for a while and they turn very dark...kinda black, and they smell kinda "fishy" and yeah, they will feel a little slimy. I assume they're bad when they're like that and toss 'em.

Throw them out.......They are already a Fungus...and too long in the fridge, they are just a mess........

I concur with Rawkinlocs, as far as how they look when they go bad - all black and slimy :eek:

I am assuming you mean white button mushrooms, they should be white, with their little fins on the bottom tight to the stem, and they should NOT be slick or slimey, and NOT smell like amonia.

When they smell like amonia, they are bad, when they are slick or slimey they are bad, when they are not white anymore, they are bad,

If kept in an air tight container in the fridge, in the dark, they can be happy little spores for a looooooonnnnnnnnggggggg time, but let the air or moisture get to them, and they can ger very icky, very quickly.

YES, they are a fungus, and they can be icky, pretty quickly, I love mushrooms, but I understand that many people do not.

I am making raw pizza right now, and wish I had some, but they aren't growing in the yard right now, it's too early in our season for them, and I haven't gone to the store but once this summer, so no mushrooms on my pizza, so sad!!!
