Why do most recipes use carob instead of cacoa (or raw chocolate)? Is there a preference as far as what's good/not good for you? I know there is a book out now Naked Chocolate extolling the virtues of raw chocolate - is it just a new thing and the recipes are older?

Those who opt for carob recognize that chocolate contains toxins and stimulants and hence is not optimal. This gives them the option of still enjoying the chocolatey taste that carob gives, without the adverse reactions.

Hello there,

I found that cacao was WAY too stimulating for me. I felt like I was on drugs. Carob didn't give me any problems and it is very chocolatey and yummy. Try this: Blend the meat and water from a young coconut, some frozen bananas, and handful of almonds (or a couple of tablespoons of almond butter) and some raw carob powder. It is super delicious!!!

All the best,

I use a mix of both.
I had some chocolate icecream a couple of hours before bedtime some days ago and had the worst nights sleep that I had in months. It had the same effect on me that having a cup of tea before bedtime had in the old days.
I know that if I had only used carob that would not have hapenned.

I have not eaten chocolate in over a year. For spiritual (and also physical) reasons I cannot have it. I tried carob for the first time a week ago. It was GOOOOD!

I visited a site selling carob, and man, it listed many problems with cacao. Sure made me glad I am rid of the stuff!
