I made your brownies (twice) this week-end and they are sooooo amazing. I honestly couldn't believe how good they tasted. I had been putting off making these as I never thought 3 simple ingredients would taste so good but I am sure glad I decided to try your recipe!. My son, husband and I loved it and I took it to my in laws which loved them also (and they are very SAD eaters). I made the second batch with the Store Bought Frosting found in the recipe thread...Yummy!!
Thanks for creating what is now my favorite dessert!
P.S. Are all your recipes this tasty because if so I want to buy your books!

I did the same thing. I just made the brownies yesterday, with the frosting recipe.....I couldn't believe how good they are!!! I took one over to my SAD eatin' neighbor, and she thought it tasted just like real brownies!! (NOt that I want them to taste like SAD brownies) Thanks RP for the easy recipe...now one of my favorites!!

Go to p. 2 of the recipe thread and look for the title "RP's brownies"...that's the best way to tell you. Good luck.

Is cocoa raw?

Arrrgh!! I must have done something wrong. Everyone raves about these and I made them once and they were just too date-y for me. I don't like dates on their own, and they just kept tasting like a lara bar, you know how that date-y tang is the first thing you taste? Are you using medjool dates? regular dates? I had to have screwed up somewhere! lol. I made kale chips the other day and they were HORRID. See..even when I don't cook, I can't cook! :D :p
Rawkinlocs

Don't fret codajess...everyone's tastebuds are different. There may be some things you like that others don't. People rave about cilantro...I hate it! People seem to love young Thai coconut, I despise 'em! And let's not even get into the love/hate thing with durian.
So, again, one person's "YUMMM" is another person's "YUUUCK"...and vice versa. If you don't like dates, then there probably aren't many things you will like with dates in them. I don't taste dates when I eat them...just mainly the cocoa and the nuts...MMMM! :)
(Oh, and I don't like the kale chips either after 3 different tries!)
codajess
08-15-2006, 01:37 AM
Yeah, I know. It just seems like the brownies are an unanimous "YAY" that I'm left out on, lol.
The fact that you don't like kale chips makes me relieved a bit, that was another one that seemed to be a big hit.
I'm ok with dates mixed in smoothies, as sweetener, etc...it's just the brownies, or as the majority of a base of something that I just can't do.
Davylp25
08-15-2006, 01:37 AM
So how many brownies and frosting does that recipe make?
Many of the raw food dishes I have tasted are always so small.

08-15-2006, 01:44 AM
You STILL haven't made those brownies yet?! grrrrrr...I make a motion that we not answer anymore of Davyl's posts about RP's brownies until he just MAKES 'em! :p
TRY 'EM TRY 'EM TRY 'EM TRY 'EM
and if it doesn't make enough the first time around, make double or triple the batch next time!
Codajess: How about doing it with part dates, part agave? I use medjool dates. What would you think about using raisins or currants or apricots or figs even? Are there any that you wouldn't mind using? It might taste slightly differently than the original recipe, but at least it would be something you could tolerate since you don't do well with dates in these types of recipes.

I just made your brownies yesterday Rawpriestess with the "store bought frosting" by EachPeachPearPlum and am about to serve it for my in-laws. The brownies by themselves are fantastic, really! But the frosting, I never thought I could make something taste so much like frosting and it was soo easy! And the two of them together, wow! Just wanted to say THANK YOU! Both of you!

I make RP's brownies all the time. They are easy to take to work with me and I can eat them while everyone else has SAD cake and pie. Its funny too because everyone always wants to try my brownie :D . About that store bought frosting recipe.....It is divine on strawberries.....just roll them in it and place them in the fridge for a while.....voila.....gourmet chocolate covered strawberries.

i just made a batch. in fact, i made a double batch because when i spread the first batch out in the pan the batter was very thin. i had already put a layer of store-bought frosting on the first batch so now i have brownies with frosting in the middle and on top. i'm about to bring some to my parents for a taste test. i thought they tasted a lot like baked brownies. i sometimes buy packaged raw brownies and, while i only tasted the dough right of out of the food processor, i think these taste batter and they're much less expensive. thanks, RP, for sharing this great recipe.

I had these at the Nashville Raw Potluck over the weekend. (Raw Priestess, your name was credited on the recipe, that's how I know for sure they were yours!) Anyway, they were the best raw dessert I've ever tasted! My husband ate way too many of them. I had to tell him to leave some for the others! :D
Codajess, I'm with you. Not a huge fan of LaraBars because of the datey thing. I eat about 1 date a year, way too sweet and rich. Anyway, just wanted to let you know, the batch I had on Saturday night were definetely not datey at all.

raven

coconut butter and cacao butter are two different products. one is a creamier form of coconut oil and the other is a product of the cacao bean. the frosting is made with coconut butter or coconut oil but perhaps you can add cacao butter. i haven't worked with it much.
my parents loved the brownies. they didn't realize that they're raw.

Are you grinding nibs up into powder?
I have used the raw chocolate powder and I think it tastes more like the real cocoa that ground up nibs.
Maybe try adding a few more nuts to it, and more chocolate powder. I always add extra chocolate powder...but didn't...and noticed a little more of a date flavor. Are your dates to dry? My dates were too dry tonight and the dates did not totally blend with the powder and nuts...they were more datey. This recipe is authentic...and awesome. It tastes sooo close to the real thing when done right...at least that is what has happened for me.

i used carob and raw chocolate powder. my dates were moist. for me the recipe could be slightly less sweet so perhaps i could add more nuts and cacao and less dates.

And yet right now Im mad at you! :p I made a batch of your 3 ingredient brownies and the frosting and yes you guessed it....ate it all!!! UGh Im gonna pay for that tomorrow but today Im loving it! I didnt have cocoa so I used the carob. I think it would likely taste better with the cocoa but it was AWESOME! It wasnt moist though and was actually crumbly. I mixed the frosting with it and that was yummy but do you have any idea what I did wrong?
Thank you for sharing this recipe though! It was my first RAW dessert

I think that Raw Priestess has cast a spell on us all!
I just made her brownies too. I was restless and NEEEEEDED something to nosh on, and that was the only thing I could think of that would satisfy. I think I got too much cocoa into it though- it's pretty rich. So I added some almond butter, and wouldn't you know it, Reese's! :D YUM I haven't eaten it all YET, but it hasn't found it's way to a pan yet either.
So I second the motion RP, YOU RULE!

I stuck mine in the freezer, thinking that way I'd have to thaw one out before I ate it and that would slow me down. (Un?)-fortunately, I learned that frozen, they taste just like those brownie chunks in Ben & Jerry's chocolate fudge brownie ice cream. They truly are fantastic frozen or thawed, I'm hooked!

What kind of dates do you folks use? Regular pitted? Medjool?
I was buying olives at a local middle eastern store, and I saw that they sell whole boxes of medjool for $45. I've been using regular pitted dates for all my date recipes. I'm wondering how much of a difference that is making if everyone else is using medjool.
AliCat
08-30-2006, 07:42 AM
Pitted fresh dates from Whole foods here. (actually I think they're dried).
My recipe was very crumbly. I couldnt make them keep a form so I mashed it all up in a bowl. Is that normal or did I not add enough dates?
Tirza
08-30-2006, 08:54 AM
I was using some dates from Whole Foods, can't remember the variety. Then I ran out and all we could find at our local grocery was those pitted dates, pressed together into a block. They work.
As for crumbling, I would say either you are not processing them long enough or you could add more dates. I know that they tend to crumble, but I find that the more they are processed so the walnuts are just tiny little crumbs in there, the better.

I used medjool dates that I bought at Earth Fare and they were perfect. I'm not a big date fan either, but you can't taste them really, they just make the brownies extremely moist! Ooooo, frozen sounds good too!!
BTW, I had them with banana ice cream and that was decadent!
Cinnamon
08-30-2006, 12:44 PM
Yes these are wonderful with banana ice cream! So this is what I did the other night... I had some of the brownies in the freezer so I cut a few of them up into tiny pieces. Made some banana ice cream and folded the brownie pieces in. While the ice cream was in the food processor, I made the frosting recipe but put the bowl into another bowl of warm water to melt it. Poured the frosting over the banana brownie ice cream, as the frosting hardened on the frozen bananas it was just like a chocolate dipped ice cream sundae! YUMMY!

RP I must say it again...your brownies are amazing. I am definitely addicted and I am getting people around me (SAD eaters) addicted too :)
Made a batch for my in-laws - they loved it
Made a batch for my parents and brother and gave some to my aunt - they loved it
My husband keeps bugging me (endlessly :) to make more - he loves them ( I think if it was up to him he'd feed on those exclusively
And you should see my two year old - he devours them with a smile on his face!!

I make them with almonds (allergic to walnuts) and these are awesome too. My favorite food has always been brownies. So these are a also a fav.

The secret is to make them when the SAD's are around. They chow them right down before you have a chance to tell them they are raw !!!!!!!!! ;)

I process until it forms a ball in my FP but I'll add a tablespoon of coconut butter if it the dates are on the dry side.
Even my SAD coworkers loved these, I frosted them with Alissa's cashew/mac nut sweet cream. Cheesecake brownies!!!

The first/only time I made them, they were crumbly and date-y, and not very good, but I ate them anyway (cuz i'm a pig.) User error, i'm sure. I cant cook/uncook for nothing. I used regular dates, though.
Now I'm going to try them again with medjools and i'm going to use the frosting, too. Probably tonight. Wish me luck!!

I have tried them with other dates, and they aren't as good, I think you need the big fat sticky medjools for this recipe, otherwise you need something more to bind them together, maybe the coconut oil or some juice, or coconut water might be nice.
But I just use the medjools, makes them delicious. mmmmmmmmmmmmm
I love them with Rawkinlocs -- cinnamon roll frosting, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Holy guacamole! I just made these minutes after reading this thread and they are too good!
I didn't have enough dates for a whole cup so I used 3/4 c walnuts, 3/4 c dates (the real nice sticky medjool ones from Whole Foods), and a little less than 1/4 c cocoa powder. I processed them until it looked moist, packed it into a 6 x 6 pan, put them in the freezer for a little while, frosted them with the store bought icing and Weeeee! Brownie explosion on my taste buds.
My compliments to the chef :D

Seems like the only recipes I like, so far (I'm on my 16th 100% raw day, cold turkey), are the dessert recipes.
I just made the brownies and the pudding (I don't have coconut butter so I couldn't make the frosting) ... However, if I hadn't made the pudding myself I would never have known it contained avocados! Very rich and chocolatey! The brownies are in the fridge firming up yet the "batter" tasted so delicious!
Thursday will be my 25th anniversary on my job and I've been trying to figure out what to make to bring in ... now I know! I've got to go get some more dates :)
Thanks to everyone sharing their recipes!

I am out of Medjools, and can't seem to find them. Trader Joes has them, but they have been sold out! Couldn't find them at Whole Foods, just the regular dates. I don't know where else to look. Try a Middle Eastern Store or International Market,
Ramadan is coming and my local Mid East store ecen had raw fresh dates on the stem. The even had a date paste already smooshed. It was really cheap, compared to fresh dates.
If you don''t need organic SAM's carries them sometimes too, i a tube.
Pic of fresh raw dates (green fruit) below

If you can't find medjools, try soaking your other dates in water for ~15 minutes. Drain before using, of course.
And RP, here's another big thank you for figuring this one out. It was when I realized that I could eat raw chocolate that I decided I could definitely do 100% raw, and this recipe just helps to prove the point that you don't miss out on gastronomic pleasure when eating all raw. And you don't have to pay $5 to some specialty store to have a raw brownie.

I made these today and they are still chilling in the fridge. I did make them with coconut oil/butter. It comes in a jar in solid form. It is white and can be used in place of "shortening" according to the jar. It is organic.
I haven't tasted them yet but I put the "store bought frosting" icing on them and topped with chopped pecans and then put them in the fridge to solidify. I took a picture and will post them once I get up to download them. They look delicious and like the real thing. Can't wait to taste them.

Oh yeah I found them and let me say I AM HOOKED on this stuff. I brought 3 brownie squares to work today and have been munching on them all day. They are VERY rich so I made the squares pretty petite. They actually remind me more of fudge squares as they are VERY rich but delicious!!!!
The icing came out good. I set in the freezer for 2 hours and then set in the fridge for 3 more hours, ate a few squares last night with sliced strawberries and brought 3 squares to work today! YUM! I am going to have my support staff try them and tell me what they think.
I wonder if they can guess!
Thanks Salsababy for all of your help! BTW does anyone know if this is good for diabetics to eat? My mom is one and I would love to be able to provide alternatives for her.

the TRUE RP brownie is this
Rawpriestess' famous Brownies
1 cup walnuts (not soaked)
1 cup medjool dates (pitted, not soaked)
1/4 cup ground cacao or carob powder
blend in a food processor until it sticks together,
press into the bottom of a pyrex pan about 6X6, place in freezer or frige to firm up a bit, cut into 16 squares.
eat plain or top with more nuts, or frosting or coconut etc.

So, I finally made this and thought it was just soooooo good! Tasted so much like real regular brownies. Thank you RP!!! :)
Is there anyone that didn't like this? Cherie, if you are reading this, did your son like this? I made this for my brother, who, if you remember, hasn't liked anything raw so far. He said it was ok but tasted a bit spicy.  He said he would still not give up regular brownies over this. Should I just give up on him? Every time when I make something delicious and thought for sure he would love it, he end up not liking it and I just get so disappointed and discouraged.

I haven't bought dates in quite awhile, but, I decided to put some "Store Bought Frosting" on some Coconut Chocolate Chew Lara Bars I'd had lying around for ages.
Mmm mmm... I guess it's the same idea as a RP Brownie. I finally get to use up the Lara Bars too. Yay! :D
