I've tried the raw honey and water, but the honey doens't seem to mix very well and gets all gooy and sticks to the side of the bottle when chilled :( .

I'm in need of a sodium/potassium/electrolyte type beverage that I can ingest while working out for long periods of time in the heat.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Anyone? Anyone....

Last night I filled my water bottle 2/3's full of coconut water/milk and froze it. This morning I topped it off with H20, it was cold at the start but by the time I needed it, it had melted and was perfect. At mile 7 I stopped and had a date (the very expensive ones I bought at Whole Foods - expensive but delicious!). I did 10 miles; it was my best run of the year. 14 tomorrow, I hope I can say the same thing in 24 hours!

If you have the coconuts give it a try, a bonus was last night I used the meat from the coconut and tossed it in the blender with some raw carob and had a great pudding late last night!

I'm actually a triathlete...

My ultimate goal is to do Primal Quests/Eco-challenges(when they come back)

I'm am a (wannabe) endurance athlete. I love the long distance outdoor, "give it all you've got/Mother Nature is your only challenge" type sports!

And I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the idea that a TOTALLY raw foodist can compete and win in these types of challenges/races!!! I want to show everyone out there that this kind of diet/lifestyle only BENEFITS the sports as opposed to all the negative viewpoints everyone has on a raw/vegan lifestyle: weak/lacking nutrients/listless/no energy types that a lot of the "popular" media has portrayed as vegans/raw foodist/vegetarians.

Might want to try the following as well
- half water
- half fresh orange juice
- pinch of sea salt

This is basically a homemade isotonic drink.

Theseeker - yes, I'm going to run the Chicago Marathon this October. I've run it before, but this will be my first year doing in raw. So far the coconut water and dates have worked best for me.

Ravin - I love Bikram yoga. I have not been all summer with the kids home but in 2 weeks they are back at school and I'm going to start up again. I've always only used water during a class, but thanks for the idea I'm going to try it!

I posted a similar question a little while ago:

electrolyte drinks (http://rawfoodtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18136&highlight=nini)

I have started drinking SmartWater from my hfs. It is fabulous. No sugars or crap in it. Just the electrolytes we need. 99 cents a bottle.

Hope this helps,
Nini

Dr. Graham recommends bananas blended w/water (you can also blend in a stalk of celery for extra electrolytes).

You're not alone :) check out http://www.runningraw.com. And the lesser ambitious (we're just running to complete, not compete ;) ) http://www.runraw.org

I spoke with Tim of runningraw.com and his formula is dulse, coconut water, agave and maybe a little coconut oil.

I've been using orange juice, a banana and coconut water with some regular water mixed in as well.

I think I read somewhere that watered down honeydew/grape juice with a pinch of salt has easily digestable sugars and electrolytes.

Hi there. I just joined this forum and noticed your signature here and was very impressed. I'm at probably 250 or so by now and am going to try doing more raw foods, hence the stop here. I suppose there's a way to PM here but I'm brand new, so please bear with me here. Is there more of your journey to wellness written somewhere? I could use some inspiration and encouragment. I'm beginning Sept. 4th in my new efforts and I'm getting everything together now for that.

Thanks so much and to your scripture I say AMEN and AMEN!!

Hi... This is from the SAD to Raw Website

ELECTROLYTE LEMONADE:
2-4 lemons (depending on size)
1/8-1/4 Tbl flax seeds (or high quality cold pressed oil)
pinch Celtic salt
a pear and/or and fruit in season
Stevia or maple syrup or raw honey

Peel the lemons and put in blender with oil, salt and fruit... then add water to fill blender. Next, add sweetener... and blend. The mixture should sweet and juicy... add enough sweetener to your taste.

My son tried Zico at a health club while on vacation. He's raving about it. Here's the website that he gave me to check out: Zico-Coconut Water (www.zico.com)

Only problem with Zico is, my guess is anything packaged like that is heated in the process, and therefor not raw :(

Sounds pretty yummy.

Where do I get Sea Salt? Is there different kinds? Do they sell em at BJ's, Wal-mart, Publix(florida grocery stores)?

To my (admittedly limited) knowledge, packaged beverages are required to be pasteurized. According to Wikipedia Pasteurization is the process of heating food for the purpose of killing harmful organisms. This heating is well in excess of 105 - 115 degrees, at which raw foodists consider foods comprimised because enzymes and other nutrients are also destroyed at temperatures above that threshold.

The best way to get coconut water is to get young coconuts at the store, crack the top of them open, and drink up :D You can also put the water and the "meat" in smoothies with other fruit.

celery is supposed to be excellent for this purpose for replenishing electrolytes, so you could juice that, or munch on celery throughout the day.

I received a reply from ZICO about how it's processed:

"Thanks for your interest in ZICO. ZICO is processed in a flash
pasteurization process that does heat it for a brief period of time.
This permits us to be able to distribute ZICO throughout the US while
maintaining the taste profile and nutritional benefits.
About 120 C for only a few seconds."

conversion would be 120 celsius = 248 fahrenheit.

I assume they're using "nutritional benefits" loosely. Thanks for the report!

So yeah, not raw... poor coconuts :(
