I'm going shopping tomorrow and am wondering if I should invest in the raw carob. From past experience it didn't taste good to me. I was wondering if the raw cocoa is going to be much different. I'll probably have to get the cocoa over the net. So should I just wait? BTW, I'm a chocoholic that's why I'm asking the question. I'm new to raw and know my taste buds will change so I'm trying to refrain from quick judgement.

I'd also like to know if there is a health preference between the two. Is one better for you than the other? I know that there's a book out about the boons of raw chocolate but for awhile there carob was the replacement for choc. b/c it wasn't good for you, right?

Thanks,
April

I'm also a chocoholic and carob doesn't taste anything like chocolate, so trust me, if you are looking for a chocolate flavor you won't find it with carob.

Carob has a flavor all its own, it's not bad, just different. Sort of a warm, roasty, cinnamony-like flavor is how I would describe it. If you could purchase a little amount to try that would be your best bet.

I think carob has more of a fudgy vibe. I think it is similar, but as Sharon in Colorado states, it is not like chocolate. I like them both, but I myself am a chocolate addict, so I prefer raw cacao. I would reccomened getting both if you can, they are neat. I like using the chocolate powder over the nibs, I think it tastes more chocolatey.

I love chocolate and find carob is an excellent substitute as long as you mix it with the right ingredients. I think carob is healthier in larger doses than cacao.

I recently picked up a bag of Eat Raw chocolate powder. I'm used to using the nibs and the taste was so different, I was alarmed at first

I haven't died, so, I guess the ER powder is okay! :p

As for the carob... I am not a carob fan. If it's blended in with other things, okay, but, if you don't like the taste, it's just another ingredient you can do without.

I had some raw pie from a shop with this date/carob filling. It was pretty good, but, considering you can make such divine and equally healthy chocolate products... I'd go with that, unless you have concerns about caffeine :)

I vote for raw cacao powder over raw carob anyday if you're a chocoholic. The color might be the same, but I find the flavor is much different
