I bought both coconuts to compare side by side. I opened a Thai coconut last week and the coconut water had a brownish tint and the coconut meat had a grayish tint and both tasted gross! So I threw it out and didnÂ’t open the mature coconut. I bought another young coconut and the same thing, brownish, grayish, and gross! I have never been exposed to young coconut before, is that how itÂ’s supposed to be? Or is it supposed to have clear coconut water and white meat like the mature one?

Also this is my first exposure to a regular coconut. It was sooo hard to get the little holes open to get out the coconut water, also hard to crack it open, BUT WAYYY harder to get the coconut meat out!!! It seemed like it took forever just to get half of it done. Can someone please give me advice on how to do the second half more easily?

How long does coconut meat last in the refrigerator? Can it be frozen? Thanks. :D

hmm...never seen any gray with brownish water.

Can keep in a baggy for a few day in fridge and yes it can be freezed.

Use a pointed in knife (be prepared to bend your knife) and put the tip between the shell and the meat and use a small hammer or meat tenderizer metal one and gently tap the end of the knife. Keep tapping in until the meat releases. Before you know it with a little practice you will be a coconut queen. Use caution with the knife.

Hi Minni,

I just did a search (the banana at the top of the page) and found a ton of threads pertaining to the questions you asked. Here is the link to them:

I just know that the few young coconuts I opened had a ton of clear water in it and the thin, soft white meat that I scooped out with a spoon with no problems.

The couple of mature ones I got had very little water and the meat was tough.

I have found that the mature have 2 to 3 times as much meat and less water.

Young coconut is the best! The liquid is clear but there is a slight color to it. I blend the liquid and the meat and love it. Sounds like first you need to find a source that has not allowed their coconuts to spoil! There is almost a slight soapy aftertaste to some of the coconuts but not bothersome.
