View Full Version : Cavity Confusion! This is weird!

This is really weird, but back in March (before I started the raw diet) I went to a dentist who told me I had 8 cavities. I was really shocked. I wanted to get a 2nd opinion. Today I did. I was about 95% raw when I started the diet and stuck with it for several months. I have been more like 80% raw since then. But today I was told by the dentist that I had no cavities.
So either the original dentist was trying to pull one over on me OR the raw food diet has cleaned up my cavities somehow.
Have any of you had any experience with your teeth getting stronger/better since going raw?
I am going to make the old dentist send my new dentist my March x-rays so we can clear this up.
I am dying to know which it is.

Yes, there are countless stories of people's teeth becomeing much better on raw, people have even had their new teeth grow in and push out fillings, it is amazing.

I've also heard of people managing to fill back up cavities. How amazing is that!
Some dentists also have a habit of being super cautious and filling up 'could be a cavity one day' spots. I went from one dentist years ago who said I had none to one that freaked out and told me I had 8. I think I had six spots filled when one day she said to me how she liked to fill small spots like mine just in case they turned into cavities!! WHAT>!@>>#@#>@ ??? I felt like I had been conned into spending $1000 + on micro spots that I had probably had for years. Shocking!

Since were on the tooth subject, I have a question. I am gonna make a confession. I am a little scared about what the future will bring. I have met some raw friends within the last few months and it seems like when conversating, someone always mentions knowing someone whose teeth are rotting or have taken a turn for the worse since doing raw. I just don't understand. Here's another thing, among the naysayers swarming around me, the common bond that each has it that "people who eat like that have bad teeth". When I was in California, I met a raw person who has beautiful glowing skin but whose teeth were in bad shape. All of this happened to everyone after going raw and when they were SAD eaters prior, they didn't have any problems. I just don't understand how eating healthy can affect the teeth this way. Has this been anyone's experience and if so, what have you been able to do in order to protect your teeth. Honestly, there aren't a lot of things that I like about myself (negative thinking I know) but the one thing I have always liked are my teeth. I have some fillings (from a long time ago) but other than that, I want my teeth to last as long as possible. I need to go to the dentist and see what state I am in health-wise.

LavendarJ - after going raw I've gotten quite a few cavities. Part of that is because I wasn't brushing twice a day from depression. I think those that have teeth problems consume a lot of sweet fruit and don't brush or even rinse after they consume it. I know I don't, but I'm going to start. My cavities have surfaced, but never hurt. When I put the pick in it to see if it sticks they don't. I just see in the mirror some black spots on my teeth. Some also feel that if they're raw they don't need to brush their teeth. I went through that phase as well and well, it doesn't work that way!

After reading all that I have about Raw to date, I have come to the conclusion that you simply have to take better care of your teeth while eating raw Period.
I think that it is a VERY small price to pay for all the benefits gained.
Extra brushing, flossing, water irrigation, rinsing etc.. what is that compared to what eating raw can do for you?
I have found that the small cavity in my wisdom tooth on the back has "healed" itself and I am now brushing several times a day with baking soda and rinsing after eating almost every time.
I think that I should have been doing it anyway but I am now more willing to take the time to do it.
If you can afford it I would definately seen a dentist regularly and as long as they are fine with your chosen eating choices, then I would use them.
I am not finacially able to use a dentist at this point in time so I do what I can and enjoy the benefits of eating raw and do what I can myself by reading and doing :)
BTW you do have Lovely teeth :D

Thanks for the feedback. I haven't seen a dentist in years (hate to say) because I just can't afford it without health insurance. I did invest in a water pick thing because flossing just doesn't get everything. I think you two are right about the natural sugar in fruits - that makes sense (especially the dried fruits, they have a tendency to stick in between teeth. Great suggestions.

It seems that my teeth and gums are in better condition than when i was eating the S.A.D.
But now i have a cavity way in the back of my mouth has anyone heard of stopping a cavity from spreading once it has started growing?
I rinse with hydrogen Prexoide and brush my gums with it, i need to get some baking soda.
MY teeth use to feel like they were loosing up but now they haven't felt that way so things must be getting better. :D

I had a recurrent twinge in a tooth which the dentist said was an incipient cavity (he saw a spot on it). He prescribed a fluoride rinse, but I could not stand it (not the fluoride, but the poloxamer, which felt icky on my lips). I looked around and read somewhere that dulse is good for teeth, so I started eating dulse daily. It contains lots of minerals, including fluorine. The pain slowly diminished. I currently eat 1 to 2 grams of dulse a day in a salad and have not heard a single peep from that tooth in weeks.
I would love for my teeth to pop their fillings and grow back! Does the kind of filling matter? How long does it take?

Do you think brushing teeth with wheatgrass juice powder is a good idea? I find baking soda too strong for everyday use - my teeth became too sensitive to it.

I just had two teeth filled this past week and my dentist laughed and said I needed to stop drinking sodas. I was like...huh? I don't drink sodas!! Then as I was getting my second tooth filled, they told my sister she had PERFECT teeth! She had very very small teeth and smokes, has done drugs, like brushes rarely, has the worst diet and eats WAY TOO MUCH sugar!! I was ticked...he said genetics play a roll in it, she's adopted. I've always had problems with teeth and cavities...now the fillings are having problems, like rotting or not filled properly. I had all my teeth capped when I was younger to prevent all of this. Yeah right... I was wondering as well if raw helped! I hate the sound of a drill. :(

You have said a lot. I have heard pros and cons. I can't let that take away my JOY. I'll just go and go and see what the end will be. MY teeth will last as long as I do.
I wish for everyone who needs it National Health Care.................

Sergi Boutenko's teeth healed in one night after 18 months on raw. I think he was fasting at the time.

I use eco-dent peppermint flavor and I love it! My teeth seem like they are getting whiter.
