Actually... I had it for dinner and have to admit that I didn't like the jicama, and will make this again and just add more celery and a cucumber instead. Everything else is really good :)

What does the Jicama taste like? I wonder?

I saw a pic in Alissas book with the burger and fries recipe. They looked like fries, but when I saw a reg jicama there so white? I wonder what they taste like? Looks around? anyone?

I really enjoy Allissa's potatoe salad. I cut the jicama into tiny cubes -- maybe 1/4 inch or so since they are quite crunchy. Not sure I would enjoy larger chunks though because jicama is quite crunchy. The texture is a bit firmer than a waterchess nut. Then I set it aside in the refrigerator for maybe an hour or so before I eat it. I also add tons of fresh dill to it.

Even my parents will eat this dish and reach for seconds and thirds. (and they are not raw) But like I said, I think maybe it is important to be sure to dice the jicama into very small pieces????

Great recipe though. And I am able to keep it in the refrigerator up to three days.

Oh yes, in response to what it tastes like, etc ----- it is firm and crunchy with the texture of an apple or firm waterchess nut. The flavor is a tiny bit sweet. It really takes on the flavor of whatever you add to it. In order to really taste the sweetness you would almost need to eat it alone like a carrot stick or something like that. A very versatile food. So far as the fries go, they would be pretty crunchy if you made them and ate them straight away. If you let them set and marinate a bit they will soften. Have not tried the fries yet but they seem like they would taste pretty good.

Click under Alissa's name and it'll list her recipes on there, including the potato salad.

I've made it a couple times before and i really enjoyed it.

TIP: Cut the jicama into smaller cubes, it tastes better :)

Just bought Jicama for the first time today.

tried it in the store with a fresh squeeze of lime. It really woke up the taste.

I agree that it reminds me of a firm water chestnut, faint sweetness too

POTATOE SALAD????????  :D

gotta go grab my cook book, didn't know that was in there

I think I know what I did by mistake, and why I hated the taste of the "jicama"... I used rutabaga by mistake!!! lol. I wouldn't have known if I hadn't read through your discriptions of the flavor.. :) I am not fond of raw rutabaga... now I know.

I made the recipe, the jicama was not so good in both the salad and the fries recipes. It just can't ever replace potatoes IMO.

I tried sliced jicama from Whole Foods. It was starchy and nasty. YUCK!!

I wonder if jicama was soaked first it would remove some of the starchiness before making the salad?

Hi. I made Allisa's potato salad and l did not like it. I found the jicama too sweet for the recipe. I love potato salad and l wish there was a way to make it taste like the real stuff.

I haven't tried Alissa's potato salad yet, but I'm looking forward to it. Jicama is an absolute delight to me. Crunch Fries satisfy my need to munch and crunch. I've had it on lettuce salads, but haven't tried it in anything else yet. Now my interest is aroused. If I can just get something made before it disappears as fries...

Yum, I made Alissa's potato salad and it was great :) I left some stuff out of the recipe, though...the chili, cumin and herbs.

Well, jicama is REALLY good with a little lemon (or lime) juice and salt. As far as tasting like fries, ummm, no. The way they're made, they taste like jicama with whatever the seasoning is.

One thing I've learned about recipes ~ they often don't taste like what they are called soooo, just enjoy them for what they are. Often the expectation will disappoint.

Not to get off the potato salad thread (not tried it yet meself) but, one thing I WILL say, for those who are missing burgers, make the burger buns AND a burger; add lettuce and tomato ~ SO fulfilling!!!!

You didn't get a good one though. They are sweet and juicy.

Good point. I'm learning this myself. ;) I try to now go in with the expectation that I will simply enjoy a recipe, not that it tastes like anything else.

Alissa's burger buns? DH and I really do need something fulfilling, I've been kind of picky lately, LOL, so a little frustrated. I'm going to try this in the next couple of days. What's your favourite burger recipe? I think I might try Alissa carrot/pecan?
