Hi all. I was shopping for a case of young coconut at the market yesterday and found a little cool gadget for putting a hole into a young coconut.
It's called a coconut knife ( even though it isn't really a flat edge knife) and it has a red handle. I was actually able to bore a hole into a young cococut very easily (took me less than 1 sec) . The hole allows you to insert a straw and drink the liquid inside or it is big enough to invert the coconut over my blender jar and empty the liquid into the jar.
I will try to post some pictures of it as soon as my camera battery recharges. I looks like a handheld corkscrew, but the portion where the corkscrew would be is hollow and has a serrated edge sharp enough to puncture a coconut with just a few rotational twists.
It is made by a company in Taiwan (Haidragon industries)
Cost $5.00
After I emptied the liquid, I then found it was easier to crack into the coconut with my cleaver. I aimed for the little hole and did a half twist with my wrist and the top of the coconut cracked right off! Also, I didn't have to worry about all of the coconut juice spilling all over the counter.

that sounds really cool, do you think it will open a brown coconut easily? or just the white ones.

I went to the local asian market ( it's called 99 Market) here in LA.
I had never noticed these before, and this time they had them hanging next to the young coconuts.
I doubt this "knife" would work on brown coconuts, the shell is too hard. Let me go and find my camera to post a picture.
I am amazed, It works this easily!
Hi Dogmd. I would love to get one of these gadgets too. I'm also located in LA; could you tell me where this market is located? Thanks alot.

I will check to see if they have anymore next time I am at the market in a few weeks.
Happy coconut opening!!

Woohoo! 99 Ranch represent! I love that place! I'm getting a durian there in a couple days :D
Thank you so much Dogmd. I usually go to an asian market downtown; forget what it is called. A case of young coconuts there is $12, and they tend to be really small. $6 per case sounds like a fabulous deal. I'll definately check it out, and get one of these great little gadgets. Thanks again!

When they ripen, the spiney skin will like split and you can just use your fingers to open it. I have no idea how it tastes. I've read it's either win or lose! They're supposed to be reallllly stinky! I've also read that they have a real custard-y texture and taste.
They DO look like a puffer fish! I think I may have seen those at 99 Ranch... They have some crazy stuff there! (IMO)
careful... I've heard you don't want to get pricked by the durians
:(
