Hum, well it wouldn't be vegan, but it may be raw.
I know that when I was growing up, there was a section in our grocery store, that had chocolate covered ants and bees, my grandpa bought us some, and I don't remember if I ate them or not, but he was always bringing around strange things for us to eat, duck, venison, bear, moose, etc.

I know on his last Audio File (June series at thebestdayever.com member site) he said he would not use Deer Antler powder as it is not Vegan so I would highly doubt this to be true ???
He has talked about Ants (in powder form as a supplement) on his Audio but again does not talk as if he used them.

Yeah, the perfect mountain man, survival food...We should keep this one in mind in case we are ever stranded and starving.

I used to eat ants when I was little. Not so bad. For the ants I'm sure it was.

Yes...ants!
Didn't you guys know that it is the new superfood now?
Researchers have found only one connection for youth and vitality amongst a small tribe of existing Indians!
The Yohimbe Indians have been using them for centuries and accounts for their long lives and fathering children at old ages.
In fact, there will be a newly packaged, truly raw dried ant superfood available shortly in 2.5 ounce prestine vaccuum packaging for only 8.95. This is not just ANY ant.
Don't be fooled by others...these are PRIME ants which are only availble in remote locales, picked by 17 year old girls with petite hands.
They gently dig out the queen ant, keep her comfortable while the other ants are harvested and placed in special glass containers.
The queen ant is then replaced to raise more colonies while the harvesters return the prime ants to be dried in special equipment...which does not harm them in any way.
The gently dried ants are then packaged using the upmost care and made ready for shipment.
When you receive the ants, do not be surprised if some of the antenna are still twitching, these are live, folks. The enzymes are intact and will give you the full benefits.
Soon there will be a special superfood ant trial mix, with gogi berries, cacao nibs and coconut flakes - perfect for hikers and beach goers.
Stay tuned for more updates!

Many years ago (I was not vegan then) I lived in West Africa. I think the tastiest most delicious most scrumptious thing I have ever eaten were grilled flying ants.
They were a rare delicacy.
After all, people (non vegetarians) eat prawns which one could call insects from the sea. Ants or whatever are no different.
If David Wolfe is eating ants, that would really really surprise (and disappoint) me.
Sorry, but I just dont have the heart to eat them. They are living too. How terrible for these tiny little creatures :( .

Ick. That sounds kinda gross. Not all people who are raw are vegan or do it for ethical reasons. I started out veggie for moral reasons and now I'm mostly raw for health reasons! I found that my priorities changed as I got a bit older. :)

Sharon, you have a gift!
I was yukking out loud and my DH though I was choking and came running in to see what was going on...he obviously doesn't hear me laughing out loud in front of the 'puter very often!
Sounds like some adverts on some famous (I won't mention names) raw food guys' websites...
Keep up the wonderful humor!

If the antennae are at the anterior end of the ant, why aren't the antlers at the anterior end of the antelope? Yet a velvet antler is an antler, but a velvet ant is not an ant.

I heard from someone that went to that that he was talking about B12 and that we truly can't get it as vegans. I don't buy it though, because I have been vegan for over 9 years and have been tested and my B12 levels are high. That was without ever supplementing.
On a side note, I just bought his Sunfood Diet book or whatever it is called and don't like it at all. Too weird.
The only ants I will be eating are " ants on a log". You know, the celery with almond butter and raisins!!!

Vegans are vegans for ethical reasons. They wouldn't be vegan if they weren't. They'd be strict vegetarians. Read the links in my signature.

I am pretty sure my friend is not a liar so I wouldn't call it hear-say. She heard it directly from his mouth. There are some others on this forum who where there, they could vouch for it. David said that ants were best taken in capsule form, because if you throw them in your smoothie it will make it taste funny. I know it sounds crazy, but I am not joking.
If David Wolfe is eating ants, that would really really surprise (and disappoint) me.

I think green vegetables are the best food on the planet! But you won't get rich selling greens to the masses. They are plentiful, and they don't store or ship well. It is better to get your hands on a rare, "super" food item, talk it up as an essential ingredient to vitality and longevity, then sell them at a high price. This is pretty much what you get with David Wolfe. Raw cacoa is a prime example, and gogis, mangosteen, etc.
I don't want to criticize David Wolfe.....I think he is brilliant! And I will continue to buy products from him, because I am addicted to his olives!

if we don't talk about eating animal products at RFT..after all we are a Vegan/Vegetarian Group....then why is it OK for us to ponder eating ANTS ?
They are after all living being, albeit an insect ! oweeeeeeee.....

I wonder if he was joking and people took him seriously? And I wonder what the context was. Maybe there was some weird issue he was talking about, which could be helped by ants. I seriously doubt he was telling people to go eat ants!!!
From recent talks he's even saying nuts are a slightly negative food that he's eating less of.

I don't think anyone is seriously pondering eating ants! Half the posts are humorous, because it is rather funny how quickly we jump to conclusions and how much we as humans like to judge what others do and say. Isn't it amazing?
You have to just laugh. :D

I agree with you entirely. A vegan avoids as much as possible all animal products including leather shoes for instance. There is no health reason for avoiding leather. (And this is just one example).

Perhaps the best thing to do would be to email David directly and ask him. That way we are not speculating about it. It doesn't quite seem fair to him to be doing that.

David Wolfe is not vegan as far as I know - his site does sell bee products. So ants wouldn't be that far off. Yes, my post was meant to be funny, but the shocking truth is I could actually see something like this happening.
I also got into the cacao thing for a while. That stuff has a bad aftertaste, kind of like mushrooms, which leaves a funny taste in your mouth afterward. I use either raw carob or organic cocoa powder now. It is more affordable, etc. I didn't get into the cacao for health reasons though, I just like chocolate and figured this would be a better quality than regular cocoa.
But you can read on his and Shazzie's site how eating cacao will make you live longer, etc. If that is true, one could go buy a dark chocolate bar at the store everyday which is more realistic to someone on a low budget.
We don't know if those who ate the cacao or cocoa actually ate it cooked or what. And not everyone who lives to be in their 100's are eating cocoa beans. Plus the fact that cacao actually makes some people jittery - Alissa for example has written about that here - she's had negative reactions to cacao.

Ok, I guess I figured that any person who omits all animal products were vegan. I didn't know that any ethical meaning was directly linked to the word. So, not all people who don't eat animal products do it for ethical reasons. A lot of them do it because they want to be more healthy. That is what I was trying to say.
Carol Alt comes to mind. I read an interview about her and she said a lot of her diet consists of raw meat.

LOL and I just reread my post and it said "Not all people who are raw ARE vegan OR do it for ethical reasons." So I guess I never even really said that vegans didn't do it for ethical reasons. Hehe sorry about the miscommunication. :)

I understand what you meant though about seeing it happen. You wrote the post so well that if it ever does they could ask you to write up about it for them! haha!

Speaking of ants...
http://www.rawfood.com/cgi-bin/order/index.cgi?id=711704644893&d=single&item_id=1098&c=Raw/Organic_Food&sc=Bee_Products&tc=
Bees generally forage for plant nectar, but they also can take the sweet secretions of aphids known as Honeydew. Honeydew nectar is produced from a small scale insect (Ultracoelostoma assimile) living in the bark of two of New Zealand's beech forests, mainly the black beech (black from the sooty mould growing on the surplus nectar covering the trunks and branches) and to a lesser extent, the red beech.

Thanks, I think! If they did ask me to write for them, I think my conscience would catch up with me after while!
Weird about the above posted aphid thing, though. I found this just a while ago, after this discussion was already in place.
On second thought, people have told me I am eating bee vomit, so maybe it's not that far off??

I respect vegans, but I don't consider myself to be one. I enjoy certain animal luxuries. But I am an 100% RAW HAPPY CHICK and don't eat any animal products other then honey. Much love to all the vegans out there. I admire your deep love for the animal kingdom. I love them very much too, but have my own views and ethics on the subject
