The last two times I had pineapple it left an acidy burning feeling on my tongue all day. Today, we had basically nothing else in the house so I had the entire pineapple. My tongue burns sooo bad. it wont stop. Does any one else experience this, or know what it could be??

I had the same thing happen to me! I don't know why though. It was from pineapple that I bought pre-skinned and cored. It didn't say that sugar was added but maybe it was and that was why. I really don't know. I never had that happen with pineapple that I've gotten whole and cut myself. Was your pineapple whole or pre-cut?

I've been having that happen to me, and from fresh cut pineapple. There was a pineapple opening thread somewhere around here. I ate about a whole pineapple and now have itchy hives. I cannot tolerate large quantities of pineapples. Go figure.

life-in-me,
mine was a whole pineapple that I cut myself. I have no idea why this happened...something to do with the acidity of pineapple?? I don't know!
mrandal, hmm so maybe I am allergic or something? weird.
I ate some sun dried dulse after (yumm) to try and take away the horrible burning on my tongue and I couldn't even taste the dulse my tongue was burning so badly...but the salt made most of the burning go away for some reason.

It has to do with the enzymes in the pineapple trying to digest your mouth or something. I think there's a thread about it somewhere on here

If the pineapple isn't ripe enough and hard it'll do that. It happens to me every time I consume an unripe pineapple. If it's a little squishy (before you cut it open) then it'l lbe sweeter.

there was another post about this and someone said if you cut the green top off and put it green top down in the fridge for atleast a day you wont get burned. it also said this person lets their pineapple go up to 3 days in the fridge this way.

If I get nice swet ripe pineapples this never happens. Under ripe ones always.
Most pineapples are picked early, and they do not ripen once picked. Some fruits do - pineapples are not one of them. There are some tricks to getting them tastier. Nora posted about using a knife to mark an X in the bottom, then leaving in a bowl of water. Presumably to get the pineapple to grow a little more and ripen.
I no longer eat pineapples that do this to me, and buy from a local source that grows them to ripe. He's excellent. I understand most don't have access to someone like this - so maybe try the method of growing your pineapple in a bowl for a while and see if that helps.
Cheers,
Sheryl

It's not an allergy in my case. Had an allergy test and that didn't show up. I used to be able to eat canned pineapple with no problems. Don't know if I still can. Haven't had any in years. But fresh? Nope. Instant blisters to mouth and tongue. I just don't eat it any more.

I'm exactly the same way with fresh pineapple. It makes my tongue burn something terrible for a couple of days. It never does that with canned pineapple though. I don't however eat the canned stuff anymore but I also don't eat the fresh because of the burning on my toungue. I've always figured it was because of some enzymes in it or something. Just a guess though.

It's called the bite. But it usually goes away in a few minutes with me. Now I realize that when I ate too much pineapple...I get hives. So I have hives all over my body today. But I don't think you have an allergy since most people experience the bite.

Here is some info I found about the pineapple:
Produce Corner: Pineapple
If your mouth hurts from the pineapple, its probably because its not ripe. If you are lucky enough to have a market that sells halved or skinned pineapples, that is your safest choice. You can see what youre getting and leave nothing to chance. If you are going to buy whole pineapples, let me give you a few easy tips: A ripe uncut pineapple should be golden yellow with a flowery, fragrant and sweet aroma. It should smell like a pineapple. Your nose, by the way, is your best guide to ripe fruit. Color and texture can be misleading, but not your nose. If fruit doesnt smell, it wont taste.
According to The Pineapple Growers Association of Hawaii, dont be fooled by the old wives tale that if the leaves are easy to pull out at the crown, then the pineapple is ripe. Loose leaves are not a sign of ripeness or good quality. The only way is to pick it up and smell it at the bottom. If it is sour and smells more like wine, its overripe. If you cant really smell it at all, its too green. Unfortunately, with the abundance of hybrid pineapple varieties, your eyes will be deceived at the looks of the fruit, but your nose knows.
Also, dont fall into the pineapple every day trap. If you abuse it, it will stop working and start affecting you negatively, such as giving you a nervous stomach, sore teeth, and more. The enzymes in pineapple are very, very powerful.
