View Full Version : autism and the raw diet

I know I keep going on about my son with autism and the progress he is making since being 100% raw, but I JUST CAN'T HELP MYSELF!
Every day is a new wonder with him! He will either say or do something new every day. Today he has been playing and laughing...so happy. I was singing to him, and he said, "Stop." I thought he was just repeating something he heard, which he often does, but when I didn't stop, he said it again. I realized he meant it, so I quit singing, and he didn't say it any more. Then one of my daughter's was going to take him outside, and she said, "Let's put your jacket on." He said, "No." He has never, ever, ever answered yes or no to a statement or question. Then my daughter said, "Do you want to walk?" He said, "No, carry me," and lifted up his arms to be picked up.
Yesterday he actually asked for a banana. He never asks for food. Then he said, "Need a tissue." I looked at him, and his nose was runny! Later he said, "Run fast!" He actually told us something he wanted to do. Two months ago he was considered nonverbal. When he was little we were told he would never talk.
I know that all of this doesn't sound like much to parents of typical children, but if you have an autistic child, you know the joy in my heart. Every day I just can't believe it. Praise God for the healing that He is allowing in my son.
I feel like I need to shout it from the rooftops so all parents of autistic children can try this.

PRAISE GOD Allison!! \o/
Yes, shout it to the rooftops!! Looks like a book in the making even if you decided not to do it for profit or donated the proceeds to a charity or even if you DID decide to do it for profit, this is a wonderful opportunity for you to get the word out as I'm sure most parents of autistic children have NO idea that their children can make such improvements and without medication!
Keep sharing the news and updates with us!

Allison,
I am parent of a typical 2 year old but I tell you what, I know that it is no small thing what your son has accomplished. I will tell you something else and that is I believe your son is going to make a 100% recovery. It only makes sense that he will.
I for one am so delighted that you decided to share every single detail. Please continue to do so because it encourages me to try and give my son more and more raw.
Your son is lucky to have you for his mother.

That gave me chills and a little comic relief at the same time! How wonderful it is that he's made such progress, and isn't it funny that the things he said were "stop" and "no".... what a blessing for you!

Ladies, thank you so much for sharing my joy. My son's story, outside of the autism, is an amazing one. If you would like to read it, you can go to this website http://www.norriedisease.com/page3.html
Sweetlips, I think you would especially enjoy reading his story.
Star, I don't know if he will make a 100% recovery or not, but I do know the Lord has great plans for him.
Rawkin, I couldn't write a book, all I can do is share what's happening to us, but maybe Alissa would like to have it in her book.

Hello Allison,
You have every reason to rejoice! Please continue to share your son's
progress with us. I would love to hear more. I know diet greatly affects
children and think your such a wonderful mommy for doing this for him.
My oldest son, Logan (8) has been on a gluten free/casein free diet
for 4 years now. Although not raw, he eats a lot of raw organic
fruits and veggies. I do not let him have food additives or preservatives either and he has alot of food sensitivities from some gut issues (leaky gut, and yeast overgrowths ). We follow the D.A.N. protacol (Defeit Autism Now).
He has also done Sensory Integration Therapy with a Occupational
Therapist and does Therapuetic Horseback Riding. Use to use a speech therepist when he was 2. My son has made great
strides from dietary restrictions, but I think if I could take it up
a notch to all raw it would benefit him the most.
I applaude you in working so hard on his diet.
Thank you for sharing.
I am new to this group but intend to read your journel.

So beautifully said Sweet Lips and just how I felt. As a Mum all our Little Ones advances are a source of joy - but how much more to see you son overcoming what "science" said he wouldn't. I wish you both more successes in your journey.

Allison,
I went to your link on Joshua. What a touching story.
Everything the Lord has said as come true so far, so I know the rest will happen. We are all seeing Joshua "improve", so we know the Lord is going to do mighty things through Joshua!!!

Allison!
WOW! I really need to talk to you about what you did with your son! I have two boys on the spectrum - my oldest, Matthew is 9 and has high functioning autism/Asperger's, but my youngest, Sean is 7 and is non-verbal and goes to a private autism school. He is so fussy about food that I don't even know where to begin to get him to eat raw! He is a major "carboholic" and eats primarily bready things. I've been able to introduce apples and grapes to his diet, but he refuses smoothies and all vegetables. I'm making my first raw bread recipe today to see if I can transition him to raw sprouted dehydrated bread. He was GF/CF for a long time, but I didn't see many results from that, but I am willing to do whatever it takes to get him to eat raw!
I would appreciate any tips you could give me on how you were able to get your son to eat raw foods and what worked for you.
I'm so excited to hear about the results you have gotten with your son! With our children having such damaged immune systems, the raw diet has got to be a way to heal our kids!
Thank you so much for sharing this victory! God bless you and your family and I pray that you will see continued healing! I want it for my kids too!
Please contact me when you have the chance; I would so appreciate your help!

Thank you, everyone, for your support.
To those of you who are parents of children with autism...my opinion (and that's all I can say it is) is that it is most important to get all grains (including raw and sprouted) and high starch foods out of your child's diet.
I'm so pleased to be able to say that my family has decided to continue with raw and to just eat one cooked meal a week and stay raw the rest of the time. It will be so much easier to keep my son raw this way.
Thanks again!
Hi everyone,
Allison, your story about your son gives me hope!
I'm really hoping some of you and some of the other moms here can help me. Both of my children have autism - my older son has high-functioning autism, and my younger son has severe autism. I would very much like to chat with other moms, particularly those with children on the autistic spectrum, to eat raw. My son refuses all raw foods except grapes and apples. We are doing all sorts of biomedical interventions, including the GF/CF diet, but our son is still very severely affected by autism.
I pray every day that God will heal him. I know that going on the raw diet would be awesome for him, but he has so many sensory issues around food. I would really appreciate any guidance and advice you can give me.
Thank you so much!
Mary

What a great testament to how raw works! As a mom to a (now teenaged) daughter who is in the spectrum (higher functioning, PDD) I can very much relate to the joy when progress is seen! My daughter is not raw but I've been careful throughout her life to educate her on what is good food, and I think that has been very instrumental in how well she's doing these days.

That is so wonderful to hear. I'm taking my 4 y/o daughter Megan to TEACCH tomorrow for her diagnostic appointment. My husband hasn't been up for trying GF/CF though, and he's not wild about me trying to be 100% raw. I don't know if he'd go for it with the children any.
When I clicked on your linkn to learn more of your story and your son's, all I got was a search engine. Could you post it again, please?
OH, and Steven from Raw Vegan Radio is doing research into autism and the raw diet or something like that...I need to look into it further...have you talked with him?

I don't get to visit the board much lately, but I happened to see this thread come up. It was so neat to go back and read my excitement at my son's progress.
And yes, Joshua still eats raw, and he is doing really well. He is still very autistic, but he has made so much progress. He is communicating much more now and able to let us know what he wants and needs, which is huge. He got mad the other day and threw his toy on the floor. We told him that can't do that and said, "Do you understand?" and he gave a big sigh and said, "Yes, ma'am" with such a little attitude. Normally I wouldn't allow that out of one of my children, but I have to say I was thrilled to see a little personality come out. Not only has his speech improved, but his mobility has as well. He used to just hang out in one spot until someone led him somewhere else. Now he is into everything and going everywhere, even walking up and down the stairs by himself with no problems (as the mother of this little blind boy, you can imagine my nervousness at that, but it doesn't seem to phase him a bit).

This is amazing!! My sister has a lot of mental illnesses and she is very slow, we think she is mildly autistic and is sometimes considered MR (mentally retarded) but can function on her own. She is just a 24/7 person. We knew a lot of people who adopted like we did who had kids who were autistic and it's amazing to hear about his progress!!! This is amazing! I want to become a pediatric psychiatrist or psychologist one day and I know i will remember all of the stuff in this forum about diet helping!

I would really like to see this thread "come back" again and hear success stories. I've mentioned before I am a special education teacher. I just got my class list and know that 3 of my 7 students are autistic.....Being raw for over a year now I feel confident in my knowledge and understanding and would like to tiptoe my "parents" and students into raw foods...at least for school snacks, etc....I would love any links or personal stories that you parents of autistic kids would be willing to share so I can help my students and their parents as best as I can.....Allison, I tried without success to link to your son's story??? If anyone else wants to share that would be awesome. Thanks a lot! ;)

She's 20. We adopted her when I was 10 and she was 11. That day she was the told child to go through to Russian Embassy to be adopted, the next day her 12 year old friend was!

How wonderful that their teacher will understand this!!
I Drive Special Ed Buses during the Summer and One of my wonderful boys is Autistic and every day, mom packs him cold french fries and Chicken Nuggets with a sunny delight drink.. I nearly weep to see what this child eats knowing that with all the love and concern she shows for him, that in this arena, she is totally clueless. The thing that is so hard is that I am with her for such a short time and other children are on the bus so, it is nearly impossible for me to talk with her :(
So wonderful to hear of your joys with your son! what an amazing testimony to love, food, health and Joy!
I would also be very interested in ideas as to how to get my younger son, who has severe autism, to eat more raw foods. The only raw foods I can get him to eat are grapes and apples. He has severe food allergies and sensory issues around food - those of you who have kids with autism or work with them know what I'm talking about!
I am desperately looking for a good raw gluten-free "bread" recipe for him. He will eat raw almond butter, so if I could find a good raw bread substitute, I could make him sandwiches. I am hoping that if I can start with that, I can move on to other new tastes and textures and expand what he will tolerate.
I truly believe the raw diet could be powerfully healing for him, but it's not just a matter of preparing the foods and giving them to him. His autism makes certain tastes, textures difficult for him to eat.
Any help you guys can give me would be very much appreciated!
Mary
