View Full Version : Is 3 green smoothies a day too much?

I was wondering if I'm having too much green smoothies and if I need to starting eating more whole again! The reason why I do this is because it's the only way I can enjoy my bananas is by adding lots of greens and water to them! It also helps me get my greens for the day.
There isn't alot of other filling fruits around here where I live that I can get! I also don't have the money to order other fruits and organic fruits or I would! Bananas always keep me full for inleast a few hours, juicier fruits don't, I could only eat juicie fruits for a snack because I would never get enough in me to fill me up. I've tried it before and I was hungry again within the next hour!
So I'm wondering if anyone else has this problem: not being able to enjoy whole bananas again and where the juicier fruits never fill you up enough. Bananas used to be my favorite fruit, why cant' I enjoy them whole anymore! I only eat like 15 a day and going by fitday.com it says that I could eat even more by all the activites I do! Dr. Douglas Graham believes in eating 5-15 a day inleast and more if you need it! So does anyone know why I might be having these problems?
Thanks in advance for reading this and to everyone for support and help! Have a great raw day!

Hi Melinda,
I can't answer your question about are 3 smoothies a day too many, but I wanted to share that I, too, had lost my desire for whole bananas and JUST recently started back enjoying eating them again. But you know what? Now that I think of it, I DID cut down on my smoothie consumption greatly. I just started getting tired of smoothies and didn't want them anymore. Then I started eating lots of other fruit like grapes, pears, nectarines and eventually, I ate a banana and said to myself, "Oh yeah...these ARE good" and now I eat them again...not as many as you used to eat, but I am back enjoying whole bananas again AND the occasional smoothie.
But right now my passion is banana ice cream with grawnola crumbled on top...YUM! :p

Thanks Rawkinlocs for your reply! It helped! I'll try to start eating other whole fruits and give myself some more variety. It's just I'm a little pickey when it comes to fruits! I only like fruits that are sweet and not sour or ones that have a sour after taste! Thats why I love melons! I don't know if I have room for melons in my parents refridgerator though! I guess I'll just have to make some room! Thanks again!

I'm not sure where the "problem" is. You can drink as many smoothies as you wish ~ I often recommend 3-5 a day. As far as juicy fruits go, yes, they are juicy. A juciy fruit should not be expected to do what a more denser food is. You can always add them to the smoothies with the bananas and greens as well. I love to add grapes, nectarines and peaches to my smoothies.
Food is not created to fill a person up it is made to nourish and nurture.
Suggestion: eat what makes you feel the best. As you evolve in your food program, as you are more nurtured and nourished you body will tell you what it wants and you will adjust naturally. In the meantime, play with your food. It's fun. :)

Hi Guys :)
Was just wondering today why I was kinda losing my desire for bananas in general. Great timing and glad that I am not alone.
I have been juicing organic Carrots (Nice and Cheap too! 20 lbs for $12 not bad!) and Oranges for breakfast.
I started out doing just shots of carrot juice just because it was so good and although carrots alone take some getting used to , they are generally quite tasty. Adding the oranges is wonderful and I could easily drink that a few times a day.
I can add some baby spinach and hardly alter the flavor of it the juice as well :) Wow talk about a funky color!

I wouldn't think there would be a problem; but I think you should be consuming a lot of greens in the smoothies.
I do remember one cautionary note I think I read here ... it may have been from Boutenko, I'm not really sure. It was something about consuming exclusively pre-digested foods (smoothies) for long periods of time or indefinitely not being good for your digestive system because it interferes with its natural function. In other words, your body comes to rely on not having to digest, break down, etc., whole foods, and disrupting its ability to do so effectively.
Perhaps someone with a good memory recalls this? Arky? :)

Melinda, I'm the same way...I don't like tart fruit at all.
Meinleben, I usually make the banana ice cream in the food processor, but at times have used the Vitamix as well.
I do frozen (peeled) bananas, nut milk and vanilla. I process and then freeze the mixture then I process again. What this extra step does is makes for a creamier ice cream that you can freeze in a container and scoop out rather than it becoming a hard block with ice crystals in it that has to be thawed, stirred, etc. after freezing.

edited to change "unpeeled" to "peeled" bananas!

Ummm, you freeze the 'nanas w/ the peels on or you process the 'nanas w/ the peels on. I'm
I always peel my 'nanas before freezing.

If you were juicing all day long, I'd wonder if you weren't getting enough fiber (unless you're on a fast). I don't see any immediate problems with smoothies... you can never have too many greens!

Originally I said 'unpeeled' and then when Revell brought it to my attention, I went and edited it.

15 bananas is a lot of bananas-your body probably doesn't want that much. I've never been a huge fan of whole bananas, I can eat them blended with something, but I can't hardly finish even one whole one without gagging a little from the grossness. This applies especially when they are more ripe.
Rawkinlocs-thanks for posting that icecream tip!

Thanks everyone for your help and support! I'll try to start eating a variety of fruits and still stick to inleast 1-2 green smoothies a day by also adding other fruits in the smoothie! I'm still going to make sure I eat more whole foods then I do green smoothies. I noticed the other day when I made myself eat some whole bananas how much more energy I had then when I drink a green smoothie! Don't get me wrong, green smoothies give me energy, but not as much as whole fruits do! Anyways thanks again! Have a great raw day!

Yeah sure. You're just here to confuse people. I can see them all putting their unpeeled 'nanas in the freezer then calling you names when they can't peel them then wondering if they're s'posed to throw the whole thing in the blender. "hmmm. Never heard of blending banana peels before but Rawkinlocs said.... " *falls off chair lmsssao* :D :D :D :D

LOL! I know, right? Funny, after you mentioned it to me I kept reading and RE-reading my post and I kept saying to myself, "But I DID say unpeeled, it's SUPPOSED to be unpeeled! What is she talking about?" and then I read it one more time and I was like, "unpeeled...unpeeled....OHHHH I said UN-peeled and shoulda said PEELED!!!" Shoo-ooot I was confusing myself yesterday for a minute there.
I guess I was having a moment! :D
