Hey all,

I am training for a fall marathon (have been raw - 100% is my goal but have had a few slip ups - since May) and , as a training run, I decided to run a 1/2 marathon race today in my city. I've never run a race without the help of gels, and sports drinks. But today I DID IT! And it went great. I would be happy to share with anyone what I ate, drank during the race. I am surprised how easy it was to stay hydrated and nourished and still be all raw. The weight I've lost since going raw certainly makes running easier, too!

So for all you runners and raw foodies who are skeptical that you can do both, it IS possible!

hey way to go, ive only been raw 3 days now (ive done it before but couldnt keep at it i no know im mentally prepared) but i want to do a triathlon raw and it does seem tough without the carbs or just getting the extra calories, i did a 2 1/2 hour bike ride today i think i only had a small papaya and didnt use anything else during but that wasnt so tough as a run, you should post what you ate im sure everyone whose into tri and marathons would like to know good luck with your goals

I would love to know what you've been eating and what you did eat and drink the day of the race. I've been thinking of walking (fast walking!) the Portland, Oregon marathon this fall. Just doing the half marathon since I've never done this before. Any helpful hints would be very appreciated!

And congratulations to you, that is awesome!

That's great! Could you tell me what you used durring the race? I'm new to raw living (2 weeks tomorrow). I'll be running the Chicago Marathon in October. I ran 7 Saturday and 10 Sunday. I tried putting a few dates in my water bottle - but I must say they were not good. It's very warm here now and the sweet warm water was yuck and when I ate the dates they were just way too mushy!

I love the way I'm feeling, but curious how I'll make it 26 miles with no gu or gatorade. (I'm pretty slow, maybe if I could run faster I would not be out there so long and would not get so hungry!)

Thanks
Jul

Hey Jul,

You will love the Chicago marathon. It was my favorite (did it in 2000).
So here is what I ate the day before the race and during the race. I experimented on long runs and here is what worked for me:

PRERACE FOOD:
2-3 protein smoothies throughout the day made with raw hemp protein and dates and frozen brazil nut milk; miso soup; guac with pumpkin seed crackers; watermelon; agave sweetened sesame milk before bed, and lots of water with lemon.

RACE:
The morning of the race (about 3 hours before the start) I had a banana and drank coconut water; and I also made a "tea" out of grated lemon and ginger.

For the race, I packed date paste in a ziploc bags and used that as my gu. To make date paste, use your vitamix/or fp to mix dates and water until it gets very sticky and smooth with no lumps. I put that in a jar in the fridge - it hardens some but stays moist enough to manipulate into the bag. I took 2 "date gu" shots during the race with lots of water. I also had a mini-banana with me that I ate at mile 9! The mini-bananas are tiny and I fit one easily into a fanny pack. I got the mini bananas at Whole Foods. I was surprised at how great I felt. The dates didn't upset my stomach and had enough "sugar" to get my energy up; the banana was perfect and I ate it when everyone else was eating Zone bars.

I hope that helps! Good luck with your training. Please share any raw runner foods you come up with!

Thanks, I was going to try dates whipped with a little lemon juice and coconut. I was not sure what to put it into though. I guess I'll try a small ziplock, wasn't it messy though?

I have no problems with eating before, this week I've been making a smoothie with frozen banana, pineapple, spinach, and a teaspoon of coconut butter. It's great and I've had no digestive problems running or spinning.

Thanks for your ideas!

My Goodness... You guys Rawk!!

I just went raw.. so still trying to get use to this. But I also made it into St. George Marathons Lottery for October 2006 Marathon as well. Didn't really know what to expect, but my overall goal is to drop this 40 pounds and be able to qualify for Boston by October 2007. I am so happy to find out that it is possible to run and stay fueled with good food while running!!

THANKS for this info, and Good luck on your training.!! Congrats on getting thru your Half Marathon with good results!

Hey Dogmd! I was gonna run St.George last year but had to give up my spot due to illness. Boy, was I bummed! It's supposed to be a beautiful course.

I, too, would love to qualify for Boston but struggle with the speed. I'm a good long distance runner but I'm just slow (still running a 9:30-10 min mile). Any tips you have for speed training? I need to do a 3:40 to qualify. How about you?

Yep. I need a 3:45 for my age group to qualify. I did a 4:30 at St. George 2004. My coach had us do speed work on a track. We did fartlek workouts every wed. Faster foot movement to train your legs how to go faster. St. George was beautiful and mostly downhill. I had to train my quads to be ready for 20 miles of downhill. So I just found a good hill by my house and ran up and down it as fast as I could ( It was a hill that had 3 miles up and 3 miles down. So I did "HILL -REPEATS 3times (18 miles)for my long runs" . Eventually it all worked out. This time, I am going to need my coach to get me back in shape. 40 extra pounds of baby weight is no JOKE!

I have a friend that went raw 2 years ago and knocked off 30 minutes from his PR with NO CHANGE in how he trained. He did everything the same, just changed his diet and lost 30 pounds. Those 30 pounds were really slowing him down!

Hey guys,
Thanks for the date squish idea. I had a lot of problems finding good stuff for marathon training. I ran the LA marathon in March. I just never found anything that worked for me and gave in to the gu in the last couple weeks. Oh well. I'm hoping to run another marathon in December in Tucson and I need to lose 20 lbs and gain some speed. So I'm back on the raw bandwagon.

Thanks for being so encouraging. I love the story about the guy who lost 30 lbs and 30 minutes.

I got a tip today from Tim VanOrden of http://www.runningraw.com. He told me he uses dulse, coconut water, agave and a little coconut oil for a pre-race and during race sustainance. I've not tried it yet, but it sounds like an effective recipe to me!

What does dulse taste like? Years ago I remember trying some seaweed and it tasted just like the goldfish food smelled. Curious, is it mild or an aquired taste?

I've actually not had dulse before, but I'm assuming it's got a fishy taste. Although he says it's really not detectable with the other stuff mixed in. I'll be trying to keep an open mind when I try it :p

That is so awesome! :D :D :D
I would love to start running and be able to do a race, but I'm kinda scared of losing more weight, and not being able to eat enough to not lose weight (I'm a recovering anorexic)

Sounds like a good combo. Wonder what it tastes like. You got your sodium from the dulse, your other electrolytes from the coconut water, some glucose from your agave and some MCT (medium chain triglycerides)from the coconut oil. Let me know how it goes. I start training for LA 2007 this weekend!
