I finally tried a young coconut AND a durian.
The coconut was absolutely amazing... the fresh water is FAR better than the packaged stuff I've bought at New Seasons. It has a lightly toasted flavor that is out of this world. The bright, white jelly-meat was soft and sweet with a mild flavor, and I couldn't spoon it out fast enough!
The durian was interesting, and while it may not be for me, I can see why people enjoy it. I did not find the smell terribly overpowering, though it's definitely present and distinct. The fruit had developed a two-inch crack on its own, so I know it's ripe, and I pulled it open easily with my hands (guarded by a thick dishtowel). The inside is a bit stringy, creamy-pinky-orangey (perhaps it's a tad overripe...? Input here would be helpful). The texture is fine, lumpy and custardy. There is a sweetness to it, but the flavor of onion is just a bit too strong. Again, feedback here as to the possible over-ripeness would be great.
... I think I'm going to have another coconut right now.
