I finally tried a young coconut AND a durian.

The coconut was absolutely amazing... the fresh water is FAR better than the packaged stuff I've bought at New Seasons. It has a lightly toasted flavor that is out of this world. The bright, white jelly-meat was soft and sweet with a mild flavor, and I couldn't spoon it out fast enough!

The durian was interesting, and while it may not be for me, I can see why people enjoy it. I did not find the smell terribly overpowering, though it's definitely present and distinct. The fruit had developed a two-inch crack on its own, so I know it's ripe, and I pulled it open easily with my hands (guarded by a thick dishtowel). The inside is a bit stringy, creamy-pinky-orangey (perhaps it's a tad overripe...? Input here would be helpful). The texture is fine, lumpy and custardy. There is a sweetness to it, but the flavor of onion is just a bit too strong. Again, feedback here as to the possible over-ripeness would be great.

... I think I'm going to have another coconut right now.

I just have to follow up to say that I'm now sitting here with my laptop in one hand, and a coconut with a straw in the top in the other.

I recently had an idea to start with young coconut and that has lead me to raw. I still feel like hell most days but I just love the coconut. I'm afraid the store will start telling me that they won't sell me so many. I don't have the skills to post links but if you look up the health benefits of coconut you will find many. Now I like to blend the juice with the meat - it is wonderful. I am thinking about freezing the blend to take to work. It fills us up without filling us up and tiring us. It also gives you a sustained energy without the coffee jitters. Mothers who can't nurse give the juice to their babies. During WW2 I read that they used the juice for transfusions when they ran out of supplies. If you are out in the extreme heat pop a straw into that young coconut and get relief!

I LOVE COCONUTS!

luckitri-that is really interesting about using the juice during WW2 for transfusions, that really shows the health benefits of coconut! I love them too, just to drink the juice or making a chocolate coconut pudding, yum!

I have jumped on the coconut wagon for the last week and a bit, and WOW! The energy I am getting is almost like being in love or something! Exciting for a former chronic fatigue and depression sufferer! :D
