Hi everyone!

I was reading The Maker's Diet by Jordan S. Rubin and he makes a lot of"Biblically supported" health claims, one of which is that we should consume saturated fat in order to be healthy. Here's what he says about butter, for instance:

"Whole-milk butter produced from cows eating rapidly growing green grasses is loaded with vitamins A, D, and E. It is also high in Activator X [...] It also contains a healthy balance of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids, as well as CLA."

By no means do I accept this based on Rubin's aleged Biblically heralded health benefits, but it does present a rather rare argument. Forgetting the vegan and raw ideals for a second, is butter (and whole milk) from grass-fed cows beneficial to human health?

I believe that coconut oil is one sat fat that is good for us. There's a component to it that makes it different than other sat fats.

I am now of the opinion that although God gave us so many wonderful things, and that Cow's milk should go to the Cow's baby :D

I was a lifelong Dairy user till 55 days ago and I did a total 180 degree turn.
That video that I watched about meat (or partially watched till I broke down into tears) totally irradicated any desire for Dairy in any form

Since being off of all dairy, eating 100% Raw and using my Coconut oil and avocados, My skin is wonderful, I don't have any allergies, no mucus in my nose, my tounge has no coating, I no longer have body aches and pains, I am losing weight and I am feeling fantastic.

Got Milk? Yup Fresh Almond Mylk ;)

No, and why would we forget the raw vegan "ideals" on a raw vegan site? If raw vegan is "ideal" then why look further?

Methinks if you wish to know more about dairy and it's affects on the human body, google it ~ or, even do a search here. It's not usually allowed to continue yet there is a thread on dairy products which was just posted last week or so.

I do believe that of all the dairy products butter is the least harmfull but still harmfull.
The post was labelled "saturated fats" and there are saturated fats which are not harmfull and are beneficial. You do not need th indulge in butter to get saturated fats.
Have you checked out www.notmilk.com

Butter is an isolated pure fat, so any nutrients that might be in there are miniscule. Why not just get those same nutrients first hand from where the cow does - plant food.

I think the Maker's Diet would be a step up for any believer or non-believer who is coming off a heavily cooked and processed SAD way of eating. But for those who have gone beyond that to fresh foods, it's just not for us.

Also I don't think we "need" saturated fats. Long ago, people just didn't eat butter and coconut oil to "get" a certain amount of fat. What's in whole plant food is what we were meant to be eating and getting nutritionally.

The founder of the Hallelujah Acres program (Christian organization promoting high raw diet, but not 100%) does a series of weekly "Health Tips" by email. A while back, he wrote a response to the Maker's diet book over a series of emails. If you go to their website,

http://www.hacres.com/health_tip.asp

you will find the archives.

Look for numbers 407-409 in the year 2005. These are the 3 that warn of "Potential dangers in the Maker's diet." In 2004, numbers 357, 358, 360-370, and in 2005, numbers 372-374 complete the original long series of the "Critique of the Maker's Diet."

I read them as they came in at the time, but as I have not read the Maker's diet, I don't remember all the info given! I do remember that he did a very thourough, in depth, well-written refute. I would recommend reading these to answer your questions. Just remember, they do not support 100% raw on this site and do encourage a small amount of cooked food in the evenings. I just thought the site would be useful to you in your need of filtering out the bad information in the book!

As for me, I believe that any benefits one may or may not receive on cow's milk are far outweighed by the absolute benefits one receives by steering clear of them!! Researching any vegan information will give you all the info you need in confirming this in relation to health above and beyond what you will read about animal cruelty!

Mary Enig has written extensively on fats and the most healthy ones. www.westonaprice.org has lots of info too. I agree that coconut oil is a good short-chain saturated fat, that is healthy for you. You can read
more at www.coconutdiet.com.

I read the Maker's Diet and disagree with most of it!

Arguably the foremost authority on fats is Udo Erasmus, author of the book: Fats that Heal, Fats that Kill. He recommends that due to the demineralization of the soil, acid rain, erosion, early harvesting of produce, storage etc that it is virtuanlly guaranteed that one is not getting the nutrients for near optimum health. A supplement is essential. According to him, unless the oil specifies 'unrefined' that it has been processed and most of the nutrients have been removed, as well, that harmful reactions have taken place during processing like the formation of trans fats. He recommend his own oil blend which I have been using for several months - my skin has improved 100%. Or alternately, unrefined organic hemp oil.

If you must use butter then at least use ghee (clarified butter - all the milk solids have been removed and you are left with pure fat - most of it saturated)

The best staturated fat is unrefined virgin coconut oil. Kevin Trudeau swears by it and I take a tablespoon full evey once in a while.
