Just because they're yellow and green doesn't mean they'll taste bad. You can get yellow tomatoes that aren't heirloom. You can also get orange ones. They taste a bit sweeter, I think, than the red ones. But not necessarily different. When I get different colored tomatoes it's mainly for the contrast of colors and not the taste.

This is what they guy at the farmers market told me. He said the yellow and the orange ones were more mild flavored and less acidic. He said the darker ones like the deep reds and green and purplish ones were more acidic, and have more of that to acidic tomato taste. I think they taste nice. I would reccomend trying them, at least once.

Hope you enjoy them.

The more gnarly and tangled they look, the better they taste... not sure why, though. I buy them in any color: red, orange, yellow, red, purple, green. The taste is just richer... they are one of my favorite foods.

I used to grow them awhile back, and the end of my garden was infested with them. But I have not seen them for a while.

I'll Tell you why :) Because that is how tomatoes used to look before they were bred to look perfect and changed and altered so that the public would buy more of them.

Lemme ask you this, If you cut your tomato plant with 4 tomatoes on it, how long do you think it would take for the vine to dry and get brown? a day?
Did you ever wonder WHY the vines stay so green on those ones in the store for so long? They are treated with chemicals and dyes to make them look or stay green. A BIG YUCKAROO!

So, I will eat the wonderful, bumply, imperfect, delicious heirlooms with all their colors and shapes.

Don't hesitate! Buy a few different kinds and have a tomato sampler, you will NOT be disapointed that you tried them :)

Just a little bit of info, "Seeds of Change" http://www.seedsofchange.com/
rescues LOTS of families tomato seeds (along with tons of other stuff) that long seeing people have been saving for years. You can benefit from their love and dedication and buy these seeds from the company.
It is a site that I highly recomend. They give you information and a variety that you can't imagine.
My Dad (82 years young) still grows a garden and includes one new tomato every year and yellows types are his favorites.

I planted 24 tomato plants this year. About 18 are heirlooms, the rest are cherry, grape and currant varieties. I'm with you guys, the best tasting tomatoes are the gnarled ugly ones. :D

The biggest value in the heirloom veggies, is that the seeds in them can be planted and you'll get EXACTLY the same kind. With non-heirloom veggies, they have been hybridized ('blended with another variety') and the seeds will not produce a like kind. In fact they often revert to something less desirable. The seeds are hybridized for a variety of reasons, but it's all messing with nature and the original.

So, if you find one you like, save the seeds, and produce your own !!

Cute story about the heirlooms
I live in the south and was at the farmers mkt last weekend and it was the 1st time I had seen them and asked what they were, well when I was walking off the lady at the counter asked the man beside her "Go find Junior, see if he knows how to spell it" I spelled it for them cause I was scared if they found Junior he mught say "Well it's AIRLOOM YOU DUMB*** " :D

Flavor is definately a difference.. they are non-GMO, tampered with, etc. They are delish and ugly and oh so tasty. I got one called Ox Heart the other day and it was soooo fleshy and tastey and just the most beautiful deep red color. Then I got anoher one that was mainly yellow with pink stripes then I got a green one that the farmer told me was fully ripe and it was absolutely delish.. One of my favorites. Hmmm.. the green one had almost no acid to it at all. I've got an orange one and a pink one waiting for me at home right now... YUM! BTW, if you can find them at the farmers market they are much cheeper than in a store. I've seen them for $6+ a pound at the store and they are 1.50 at the farmers market, cheeper than most tomatos regular tomatos are.
