Do they?

That's what I keep reading from other peoples posts. I'm getting confused

and I would really like other peoples opinion on this topic.

If you want to lose weight should you stop eating bananas for a while?

I've read a couple people mention that they decreased their consumption of

bananas and they lost weight quicker, is this true as well?

In my humble opinion-this is not the case. I remember reading about people trying to do Raw & they were concerned with eating bananas & the glycemic index. I like Alissa's approach to Raw- start out eating what you want *RAW* & your body will guide you. As soon as I started to limit myself-be it fat or whatever-I ran into problems.

There was a thread a while back about bananas being one of the most supreme foods on the planet. Let me see if I can find it.

I have searched but I can't find the link. It was full of valuable input regarding all the nutrients in bananas.

Maybe the original poster will see your ? and find the link. :D

I hope that my input helps. If you don't have Alissa's book yet-I would highly suggest purchasing it & the DVD. It is full of info.

Hi lana,

Thanks for your response. I think this is the article you were talking about:

I just get caught up in other peoples opinions and their experiences, that I

don't know what to believe

everybody is different... you will have to experiment & see for yourself.
i do not think you can get FAT from eating raw food. not everyone gets skinny - and pre raw skinny people sometime put on weight (depending
on how much they are eating) - but no one gets fat.
i'd be curious if someone has ever tried (as an experiment) to get fat on raw. i went thru a huge pig-out phase (3000 + calories a day)
for 5 months & i got about 10 lbs above my ideal weight (12 lbs above
my desired weight)... and that was it... i couldn't gain anymore...
i was happy - i thought "this is great i really can eat all i want & i'll
never be fat... i may be a little round for my taste, but who cares!".
that being said - i never got skinny eating raw either (like i have with dieting on sad). i always stayed about 5 lbs above my prefered weight - even if i fasted - or tried to "diet" raw. i wonder what other peoples experiences are...?
i also experimented with low glycemic (no fruit) raw and 811... and i always lost a little weight the first few weeks - then it would climb back up to that same 5lbs above my prefered.
i have thin & overweight friends who eat bananas & loose like crazy -
those friends seem to have problems with fats - & vise versa... & i think others need a balance of everything to heal & eventually loose.
bananas are just too good for me to give up.... i think of them as
"natures fudge" cause of their decadent texture.

why would bananas make you fat as opposed to any other fruit? It's not like they have a lot of fat in them

I don't eat many bananas, and I'm fat, so it ISN"T bananas, LOL

it is difficult when you first start to eat raw, because we STILL have all of that OLD programming in our heads, low calorie, low carb, low fat, etc.

All of those diets do work, because they limit refined sugars, and processed carbohydrates.

But bananas are not refined or processed, there are hundreds of different kinds of banans that grow on our beautiful planet, and they all are super yummy, and delicious, I say, try them all, and enjoy the process.

At first, when you are starting out eating raw, it can be difficult to know exactly what to do, and whom to believe, but just know this, your body will eventually give you all the right signals, and you will be able to KNOW instictively what to eat, but UNTIL that magick moment, just eat raw, whatever and whenever you are hungry.

it's that simple.

and NO bananas will NOT make you fat if you are eating a raw diet, if you are eating cooked foods, it's the cooked foods that are causing you to gain weight or to be over weight, it's not the raw fruits.

trust me on this, or not, it's up to you, just try it for yourself.

bananas are natures way of smiling at you.

Hello, Boz. :)
I am in complete agreement with all of the previous replies to this post. :D Quite honestly, I am tired of hearing people say that bananas make people fat and I simply do not agree with this comment. Yes, bananas are high in sugars compared to some fruits and eating a lot of them could cause increased fat storage, but that does not make it a “fattening” food, especially for the majority of people out there. I feel we all have different bodies and there is no one way of eating that will work for everyone. Some people may not be able to eat a lot of bananas, but I know some people who eat 7 or 8 a day and they are fine. Some people have a very low metabolic rate, where others have a high rate. Just as with anything else in life, I try to find out what works with my body and eat according to what works for me. If someone wants to lose weight, they may want to be conscious of not totally over doing the nuts and very sweet fruits, but in my opinion if you enjoy bananas then I don’t see a problem with eating one or two in a given day. I don’t see how one or two bananas, or the lack thereof could cause a noticeable change in weight gain or loss (all other things remaining constant). Yes, if someone over eats bananas, then maybe, but even then I don't think so.

In summary, I don’t feel that bananas make people fat and I don’t think people should be afraid of eating them. One of the things I love most about raw is the freedom to eat as I wish. Free of guilt, sickness, and worry. I personally don’t think I could live this lifestyle if I had to carry those same principles I had with SAD over to this way of eating. I don’t want to have to be afraid of what foods I put into my body now. I try to eat certain things in moderation (mainly nuts and seeds, although I still eat more than I should), but overall I focus on not denying myself anything I am craving, especially if it’s a fruit or veggie. :D

Try eating bananas only for two weeks (eating only when hungry) and see whether this will make you fat.

I have been eating four or more bannanas a day over the last two weeks. Before this I was raw for two months and only lost weight when on an all orange diet. 2 weeks ago I decided to cut out nuts, and dehydrated food (including raisins which I was insanely addicted to). Now I am back to losing weight again. I eat fruit, veggies, and a bit of olive oil in my honey mustard salad dressing, and sometimes avocado and coconuts. Anyways, point is I've been eating a lot of bannans... truth be told I ate two as I read over this bannana discussion, I was hungry and it sure made me crave them. That makes 5 bannanas for me today! Bannanas fill me up better than anything of all raw foods, and I am losing weight eating lots. :)

Thanks for everyones replies...

I was just getting concerned because I don't eat just 1 or 2 bananas/day. I'll eat 2 for breakfast and like 3-4 for lunch and maybe 1 with dinner. I feel awesome when I do that, but at the same time I get discouraged when I read that other people noticed an increase in weightloss when they ate only 1 banana for the day.

I was also concerned because I've been looking over Dr. Grahams site and I thought he was advising those that exercised heavily to consume large amounts of bananas to increase calories. Do to my school schedule, the only exercise I really get is walking on campus from class to class. Basically, I didnt think that his advice was also for the individuals with a somewhat sedentary lifestyle.

Once again, thanks for the great responses. And, No, I don't think i've ever seen a fat monkey.

I find the opposite - they don't make me fat at all! The more bananas I eat, the less I crave foods that DO make me fat. ;)

As others said, everyone is different. Many don't get fat, but for me I can't even handle .5 of a banana...food intolerance? maybe. As soon as I smell a banana it feels like my butt starts to grow!

Well, if you really want to know, the best teacher is your own experience. Eat less bananas or leave them out for a while and see what happens! Some people are even allergic to bananas, so maybe this could be the case, although it's not very common.
I eat lots of bananas and never had any problems with them. I love bananas. I think they are kind of neutral. I ate lots of bananas when I started eating raw, and the weight just dropped off (I've always been normal/slender, but even I had some excess weight) and now it's just stable. So it didn't make me fat or stopped me from loosing weight, but it may be different for everyone.

I eat 4-6 bananas a day mainly because they are good in green smoothies and also because they are cheap fruit. No problem with weight - i am very happy with my weight. But still keep overeating for emotional reasons. When I stop- I am working on it on the program called The Solution, I think I might have the oposite problem - I might get to thin. But I believe in my body and i think it decides the best what weight is the best for us.

hmmmmmmmmmm, somehow I cannot understand this statment. ;)

for those that had a hard time losing weight eating bananas, I doubt that it was "bananas" alone. Its' hard to say without the panel here.

I've never encountered weightgain with bananas. The only reason I shy away from them is they are hybrid. that's another thread I am not going to even touch upon.

Taking in more calories than you expend is what makes you fat. I think the problem with a banana is that it's soft and you can eat it quickly. Takes a lot longer to eat a crunchy fruit like an apple than it does with a banana. It takes about 20 minutes for the food you ate to give you a feeling of saiety. I can't tell you how many times I've seen a person wolf down a banana and then it's as though they forgot about it. They might then eat another banana and another one or then go on to eat something else because they think they are still hungry. If you eat something that takes longer to eat and requires more chewing you tend to be more aware of what you're doing. Now if you eat an occasional banana and can stop at that, I wouldn't think it's a problem. But if you're one of those people who goes through a whole bunch of bananas in a day then it could be a problem.

I used to have a boss who for whatever reason thought he needed a lot of bananas for potassium. I worked at a golf course. There were bananas everywhere! I am not joking. He'd go out golfing with bananas in his bag. Whenever you saw him, he was eating or peeling a banana. The only things I ever saw him eat were bananas and hard candy. The hard candy always broke his teeth because he bit down on it. He'd then have to eat soft food until he could see the dentist. And what food is soft? Yep. Bananas. And yet he wondered why he had a weight problem.

A banana is approximately 100 calories. So I think it would take a whole lot of bananas to actually break your calorie barrier and cause you one to gain.

I think the majority of folks who aren't used to eating bananas, have a hard time eating more than a few at once. I can eat up to 4 at a time. However I could probably drink a lot more, if they were in a smoothie.

For someone on a 2000 calorie diet, that is around 20 bananas. It doesn't seem like much but try to eat a third of that for a meal, not everyone can do that.

I know at least one of the people in the above photos has eaten 30 bananas in a sitting. And they are lean.

If you aren't working off your calories, sure they'll catch up to you.

I just ordered a case of bananas. I am looking forward to seeing how many I am able to eat in a day.
