Hello all! I'm leaving for Hawaii on Saturday. I'll be going to Maui and Kauai. Does anyone know if I'll be able to find bananas in the grocery stores there? Do they have other good food as well? Thanks in advance for any help!

You MUST try mangos and avocados straight off the trees, if you can. And look for farmers' markets to get fresh, local produce that was probably just picked the day before.

I've only been to Maui, but stop at any road side fruit stand and try ANY of the fruit there. On the Hana Highway, close to Hana there is a man on the side of the road who has a big ORGANIC FRUIT sign - stop, say hi and he will let you sample any and all of his delicious fruit. This place has truly been one of the best places I have ever been.
Make sure you eat the ICE CREAM BANANAS. They are baby bananas that taste like vanilla ice cream. Seriouly!
Also try BUTTER AVOCADOS. Creamy goodness that will leave you grinning from ear to ear.
In the town of Paia there is a living roods store that is solely raw - or at least it was 2 years ago. Across the street from it is a co-op that has everything.
Enjoy and WEAR SUN SCREEN! (sorry, had to throw in my motherly advice)

If you go to the waikaloa church in Hana, Maui theres a banana patch there to the side of the banyon tree its almost always going off. If you walk around town Im sure youll see some Avocado trees. I lived in kipahulu for two years its far more abundant than Hana. Nihiku is damp and things grow gigantic, beautiful ocean view also. Have fun its beautiful.

Well Daisy... when your in Maui....go of to the Hana Highway and a little after Paia, stop at The Garden of Eden Arboretum. You'll see this guy called Bud the Birdman there (has 12 trained Macaws, makes a hell of a racket) who is a raw vegan (usually HA!). He will know many things that only a local will know about such subjects. When I lived there we would hang out quite a bit. One day he said. "Ya know there are these abandoned pineapple fields that have kept producing fruit for years, probably pretty free of the pesticides by now".
We hit that field and it was a gold mine. Stuff like that, he can get you there. Just call him 'Peppy Tuba' and tell him an old friend says hello.
Hi, Where in Maui are you going?
Not far from the airport there are at least 2 natural food markets, one even has some raw foods at their deli counter! I was in Kapalua in January and found a great little natural market nearby, yhey occasionally have raw cookies.
Check out www.happycow.com and you will find a few listings but call first, some have gone out of business. If you are going over to Wialea ( spelling?) side you will find several places including a raw cafe !! I think it's called Joys place?
In Lahaina you will find a Jamba Juice, they will make you a 100% fruit only smoothie and they have wheat grass! Near the Maui ocean center/aquarium there is another juice place. I remember having great carrot juice there!
Good luck and sorry I could not give you details. Ask the locals it is only way to find all the good little places! I use Happy Cow and the book healthy highways everywhere I go but the first thing I do is hit up the locals and start asking if they know of any health food/natural markets and or juice bars. Don't be afraid to venture into a local health club or fitness center and ask there as well !
