I just bought 2. Do you make a raw, virigin pina colada? Not sure how to use it, but I hear they're really good for you.

Thanks.

I cut off a little circular whole in the center, stick in a straw and have a refreshing beverage, and then I spoon out the rest and eat! very simple :) enjoy, but beware, they're addicting little buggers!!

I agree with Im2Fruity, they're best eaten right away, and plain. Crack open, drink the water, scoop out the flesh and eat.

I make coconut banana smoothies using the coconut meat and some of the water, frozen bananas, and agave (and sometimes a few brazil nuts or some raw hemp protein powder). Yum!

Eat the meat right out of the coconut as I'm staring out of my kitchen window OR grind the meat up with the coconut milk inside in order to make spring rolls! YUMMY!!!!!

In a little over a week of trying to eat these almost every day the flaking dry skin condition on my legs has gone, the rest of my skin is clearer, my energy level is better, my skin is not so itchy all the time and many other improvements that I am not sure of yet. Being able to get these is one benefit of living in a city. I just wish someone could tell me a better way to get them open!

I get mine at our local health food market, they order 2 cases a week for me but I have seen them at super walmarts ! and whole foods carries them as well. Don't be afraid to ask the produce manager of your local store if they can be ordered.

I love them but have been having some strange pain/tenderness in an area and I noticed I only have them when I drink/eat young coconuts? When we were in Miane for 10 days and I had no coconuts the tenderness was not there but as soon as i got home and started cosuming coconuts again it started????

My two favorite ways to eat them... the Pina Colada recipe in Raw Food Real World is out of this world! And they also have a chocolate pudding recipe that calls for coconut and it is also my most favorite pudding. I actually had a Pina Colada this afternoon and in our 90 plus degree heat it was fabulous!

I've been paying $1.98 at Central Market but the local Asian markets they are only $1.09.

I've only found them at Whole Foods, and I pay $1.99 each.

ETA: My local hfs said they might be able to order me some if I can get them the name of a/the company that sells them. The Whole Foods ones I've bought have "The Banana Co." stickers. Anyone have any other brands?

I pay $16.89 for a case of 9. I have to look a the box for brand, they have an e-mail address on there also. Watch the ones form Asian markets, some are still sprayed with formaldehyde.

When I was fasting I'd drink the water and save the pulp in zip bags in the freezer. Lately I've been doing puddings and ice creams with all that frozen pulp.

I cut one of the pulp into noodles for a future "pad thai" but I haven't used that one yet. Still in the freezer.

I was getting a case of 9 for around $11 but then they started adding gas surchases on there so my last case was closer to $16

Where is a good source for young coconuts not treated with formaldehyde etc. through the mail? How long will they stay fresh? Virginia

west Phoenix I go to Manila Market (99 cents) or Asian Market (I think $1.29). I never knew about formaldehyde - can you smell it? I never even knew anyone else was interested in them till I found this forum. (They speak little English at these stores). We have a new whole foods chain called "Sprouts" and I have asked the produce manager to consider stocking them. The other stores are only 3 miles away but I would rather not smell the rotting fish and the Sprouts is on my block.

This is a great thread - I am looking for Thai coconuts without chemicals like formaldehyde. Organic ones have been difficult to find. It looks like a few of you have sources and buy by the case. Can you tell me where you order from and what brand/supplier it is?

I get coconut water in cans, so, when I do get a whole baby coconut, I splurge and make puddings and pie fillings. I haven't found anything else raw food-ish that can so perfectly mimic the smooth texture and neutral taste that baby coconut meat has.

How can you tell if they are sprayedwith formaldehyde or not?? I haven't found any organic ones and I tend to buy mine at the asian market because of the price.

Does it help to wash them before using with the veggie wash, like I do now, or does that make it worse.

I always fear something on the outside getting inside my juice and meat, and ruining the whole thing, but how would I know??

And one more question, from the time of purchase, how long do these coconuts stay fresh??

Thanks

I like to cut them open, scoop out the meat and put it on my dehydrator trays for a few hours, warming at 105. It tastes like you are eating slabs of butter when the coconut is warmed. Let it go a few extra hours and you have some coconut jerky! I put the milk in a pitcher and use it that day in my smoothies.

I've heard about formaldehyde being used but the coconuts I buy will mold in a short time, and they don't have a formaldahyde smell to them. I personally feel that they are safe.

This is a good point, mine go bad very very fast. I don't think they would if they were treated...

There was also a thread here a while back. These men that own a raw food restaurant were concerned about this so had the coconuts they get tested, and they came back negative for formaldahyde and such.
