View Full Version : Unecessary and Unkind!!!

Hi my dear Raw family,

I am posting this because there have been a lot of these types of posts lately.

I just deleted -- yet one more post -- of a deliberately unkind nature, and this was directed at me personally.

Now I don't care what people think or say about me, but it isn't very smart, or kind to post about an issue that you know nothing about.

Let me explain, this morning, someone posted in a thread that If I had a graduate degree, then I SHOULD know how to spell, and that is probably true, but what happened was it was this person's first post, and many other people rallied to my defense (thank you) and the post got off topic.

Luckily, I just deleted the posts, and emailed the person that if they wish to say something about someone's spelling to contact that person.

This board is a SAFE and SECURE place for people to come and learn, and listen, and vent, and rant, and share, and be supported, and support others on their raw food quest.

It IS NOT about grammar, or paragraphs or sentences, or commas or exclamation points, or spelling or any of those things.

YES, I must say that sometimes we can get irritated at the slightest thing, but posting on this board about it, just isn't kind or something that we moderators will tollerate.

If you have an issue with punctuation or spelling or paragraphs, then that is YOUR issue, and we don't want that on this board.

But just to answer the poster about MY graduate degree, and lack of spelling skills.

I am legally blind, and I often have either Dragggon or my assistant type my posts, sometimes, I will try it myself, but I can't read the small print on the boards, and I often cant' read what I type out, so sometimes I get help if it is available, and yes, not everyone spells well, so if you see a post by me or anyone with spelling issues, or paragraphs all together or punctuation not in the right place, give them a break will you?

Because just to post on an international board may be difficult enough, without having to worry about spelling and all that for some people.

We also have tons of newbies here, and I can remember my first time posting, I didn't even know how, and I kept posting on the first page of a thread, the same post about 5 times, because I didn't know there were more pages to it. LOL

So If I can do that, so can others, and kindness is always the best policy.

And I bet that if I or anyone has spelled something incorrectly, then YOU have too.

So, give everyone here a break, and be kind.

Thanks.

Picking apart someone's spelling on a message board where people are just typing fast and being casual is one of the silliest things I have heard. This person is obviously not very happy and needs to pick people apart to feel good.
Now if it was something that was going to be published or on a billboard or something, I could see picking it apart. But this board is akin to an informal conversation!

RP, everyone here loves you. Please don't let what that troll said get to you. :(

Your energy is needed elsewhere. I hate to see you irritated by someone who was intentially trying to get your goat. You just happen to be the target this time. It is an unfortunate problem which comes with a public message board. The moderators here are pretty on top of things so we can quickly get back to topic.

All the Best. :)

Thanks everyone,

Just to let you all know, I wasn't upset or irritated at this poster, trust me if this is ALL I need to deal with from people, I'm in heaven.

Remember I'm a High Priestess of Witchcraft, and THAT comes with a lot of flack from others, YIKES!!!

Anyway, I would be way more upset if this was directed at someone else, much like many other threads have been lately, it may be the summer heat, or Mercury retrograde or whatever, but it just isn't kind or nice, and I for one, won't put up with it,

Neither will Alissa, she loves her board, and her members, and she has told us in no uncertain terms that this type of stuff isn't tollerated, so that's where I'm coming from.

Our illustrious leader, (I always think of Rocky and Bullwinkle, when I say that) LOL

that's how many threads Raw Priestess has contributed. I am in awe of her energy, her generous sharing, i will open a post if i see she has something to say on it. do i give a damn about her or anyone elses spelling! not that i noticed her spelling, but if it is by any chance lacking, i would put that down to her being a creative right brain person, who is concerned more about the content than the dotted i's and crossed t's!

nicely handled.

I have actually noticed that a lot of people on here are very poor spellers (me included!)

I do think it is important to take the time to learn to spell something right as the things you have to say come out so much better when things are spelled correctly.

I am not about to be rude to someone for not spelling something right though as I do it all the time too.

I love good writing, but geez, I always think of these kinds of boards and emails as relaxed kinds of communication. You simply can't judge someone's intellect or authority by their writing skills on a message board. Who wants to care about dangling participles when you're just talking among friends?!! LOL

RP, I think that person was just mean spirited. By your example you have been an inspiration to many and we cheer you on!! Yay You!!!

Wow, how silly. It sounds like someone who has an issue with you other than spelling. Maybe it is someone from your real life who has a problem with you? That happened to me once. Just as silly; but a bit more disturbing.

However, I am glad to read you view it as ridiculous as it truly is, and are not taking it to heart.

This internet-people hating thing always amazes me. People engaging online don't truly know other posters, and to hate someone because of posts is so saddening. There is so much to a person other than the narrow subject matter that comes up on a particular board. It's just too easy to form inaccurate judgments on that alone. Reading type from posts about raw food is certainly no way to know someone. Even in real life it takes years and years to know someone; and even then, to know someone thoroughly is close to, if not impossible.

On a more serious note.
I do not understand why my spelling is so bad.
For my primary education I went to a country school where there would have been an emphasis on such things and had a very well educated mother (that helps a lot). There were only 40 pupils in my school and only 4 others in my class.
I should be able to spell but I can't.
I can not account for it.

It has to nothing to do with intelligence it is more to do with spacel thinking and other left/right brains stuff.

I wouldn't let the stigma of being a poor speller let you feel for one moment that you are in anyway lacking or flawed.

I was born a lefty and my old school teacher didn't allow that. WHAT A MESS! I struggled and still do with my learning, handwriting and spelling.

I learned something while home schooling my sons, If you struggle with spelling, look at the word correctly spelled and then in your mind write it on a chalkboard and look at it that way, and when you come up against the word again, you might just spell it right :) Works for me and also when I am looking for just the right word to say, I can go back to my chalkboard and look at it.

Btw my older son won a 5 school spelling bee. He says it helped him too.

spelling is VERY overrated hhaha

And just so you know, many schools now are not requiring proper spelling anymore and allowing the kids to spell as it sounds. Bizzare!

Hey, that is what SPELL CHECK is for! :D
In our relaxed atmosphere here, I am sure you don't need it, but out there in
the world .... it is an invaluable tool.

For some reason, some people need to feel superior to others.
They manifest this by pointing out the flaws (or perceived flaws) of others.
I don't get it. (checkout the way I spelled perceived... I before E except after C ... LOL

Sorry - I think I need a green drink!

Me too. I still have the little prize I won in the 2nd grade spelling bee. But typing? I remember sneaking into the typing class in high school and removing the "Q" keys from all but the teacher's typewriter. No computers back in those days. We had manual or electric typewriters. We were still on the manuals. About half of the class was spent searching for those "Q" keys which came as a great relief to me because I'd already seen that typing assigmment and didn't want to do it. :D

To RP, I know you have no clue as to who I am and I don't truly know you, but I feel like you (and a couple others in the mix!) are kind of my 'raw food mom' and you don't know it! There are several people here who I feel like I must read all they write about (yikes!) and just want to say to all:

I agree with RP! I think people need to lay off of a person who has a few typos here and there. I used to be an excellent speller. In my old age - lol - I tend to slip and have the ocassional typo. Or I'm just typing too fast and thinking not as fast so it comes out really wacky, which of course I don't notice until it's up there for all to see, then I have to hit the edit key.

Sorry I missed the show this morning.

My eyes do tend to get tired reading some posts who have a constant habit of abbreviations such as U instead of you, 4 instead of for and writing things like stinx or sux instead of stinks or sucks. It gets really difficult for me to read those types of things. I know it is cute to the folks writing it, but not to some of us old people trying to read it.

Obviously we are all at different levels of reading and writing but it's a good idea to tell a person directly if there is a problem. If no e-mail is available to do this, try to get their attention on here and have them e-mail you.

Fiddler, that is terrific! I actually read that as smoothly as if it were all spelled correctly! Interesting, because I almost always pick out and stall at spelling mistakes or 'variations'. Having said that, I also am guilty of typos and spelling mistakes as well as grammatical blunders when my mind is running faster than my fingers.

I am also puzzled at the seeming ease at which some people learn to spell and the struggles that others seem to undergo. As a trained teacher, I have found myself in agreement with the theory that there are several different learning styles and combinations of those styles. My son, for instance, has always spelled in a very curious way. He spells as if it were a phonics book. Perhaps I rammed "Hooked on Phonics" too far down his throat. When you look at it, the way he spells seems perfectly logical and easy to read. It is likely the way English spelling should have been set up.

Look at the difficulty that immigrants have in learning English. Our spelling and grammar is illogical because of all the "imported" words from other languages. I once taught from a book which I have since lost, which explained much of our problem and its origin. The author pointed out that English grammar is based on the rules of Latin grammar-a language to which it is not even related! The "scholars" of the time were enamored of the Latin language. It was, after all, the language of scholarship. So in their arrogance, they superimposed those rules onto English. Or tried to.

Some people can learn English the same way some children learn to read. By sight recognition. Whole words. Others must "see" it broken down phonetically in their minds. I hate that people, especially children are forced through a "spagetti factory" type of learning system that does not take into account their unique style of learning. Those who do not learn in the currently accepted style have a much harder time of it, and show up with noticable gaps. They are subjected to cruel taunts of those who just "happened" to be lucky enough to be taught in the same style that is their learning style. Unfair? Yes. Impolite and boorish of them to point out the gaps of others when it was no fault of theirs? YES

The bureaucrats say that there is not enough money to hire specialized teachers or aides to maximize the abilities of all students, not just the students who happen to learn in the style of the prevailing educational fad. I say, how much money are we wasting by turning out students who are unable to function as well in the system because their learning style was not capitalized upon to take them to the top of their ability? What a sad, mediocre society we are producing!

Sorry, but this stirred up a bees' nest in me. Now let's go on with our main concern - pursuit of great raw living, no matter how it is spelled. Nu?
