Hi

I am only able to go shopping once, maybe twice a week, so I have to stock up on fruit so that it lasts through the week. The fruit (namely peaches, apricots and nectarines) are not ripe when I but them so I leave it on the counters to ripen. But they go bad so fast and then theres those pesky fruit flies. So my question is, how can I store these so they will ripen up and not go bad? It is rather warm in our house, no AC and lots of lovely windows that let quite a bit of heat in. I hate it when the fruit goes bad as it is such a waste of money. So short of only eating safe fruits like apples and oranges and grapes what do you suggest?

Thanks!

We store our fruit in baskets on our kitchen counter, and our onions, potatoes etc in baskets under our chopping block, then when they appear like they are getting ripe, after a day or two, we move things like peaches into the fridge,

also, are you aware of many ways to keep your home cool in the summer?

you can open windows at night, and close during the day, also close drapes to keep out the warmth and light, use doubles on windows, we use venetian blinds AND a heavy drape on our sun facing windows, (also helps in the winter too) as insulation, hang those roll up shades outside of sun facing windows, plant quick growing bushes outside of sun facing windows, use disiduous shrubs so they block the sun in summer, but let in sun in winter, also, you can hang wet towels in front of a breezy window, acts like an air conditioner, as the water in the towels evaporates, it cools the air, add ceiling fans, which not only blow the air, making it cooler, it also helps move warm air in the winter.
close doors to the warmer rooms of the house in the summer, and stay in cooler rooms during the day, etc.

Thanks for your reply.

I had been keeping the fruit in baskets on the counter but it has been spoiling so quickly. I know it is the heat and humidity thats doing it.

Unfortunately we do not have any blinds or any thing to hang them on. We really need to get some. It is just too hot during the day. The windows that we loved so much this winter for letting in light and heat have become a curse now that it is so hot out. We do open up and night and shut down during the day.

Thanks for your advice!
